As a connoisseur of Ryuden eating poo poo, I have to say today's episode of Ryuden eating poo poo was my absolute favorite and will be very hard to top without actually killing the man.

Hell of a basho all around. My stable performed execrably, but maintained my style of fantasy sumo throughout and I am proud of them for it.

I'm so glad Ura was able to do some Ura stuff on the final day.

Teru is very good but also Kotonowaka is very good. I hope they both can stay healthy.

I hope Kotonowaka gets his promotion to ozeki. I cannot see why they would withhold it from him after his performance in this basho.

Sounds like it's a done deal and just waiting for the rubber stamp. From reading various comments in the latest Sumo Prime Time it appears Kotonowaka might not be gone, with Koto wanting to keep the Kotonowaka name for at least a little while as a tribute to pops so that the name gets onto the banzuke as Ozeki at least once before doing the switcheroo.

No way they don't. If he'd just gotten blown out the way poor Kirishima did, maybe. But after he actually put up a fight against Teru? He's got ozeki for sure.

NHK is treating it as a done deal:

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20240128/k10014338401000.html

basically says that the kyokai have called a special meeting to discuss kotonawka's ozeki promotion, and the fact of the meeting itself is confirmation that he gets the nod

(personally i'm crossing my fingers for confirmation when the immediate promotions get announced that Kitaharima makes it back to juryo, because holy poo poo what a story that could potentially be)

Both Kirishima and Kotonowaka are 0-fer against the Kaiju because they're both belt guys, but without the fuckoff size and strength to match.

Keisho's performed the best out of the three because Teru struggles against high-level tsuppari, but his best shot at the rope already passed him by. Don't think his body can hold up to a full rope run at this point.

They're pushing away active fans as well. I used to watch every match every day, but now I'm barely watching a few bouts. I even went fantasy kyujo because I'm so disconnected from sumo now.

It was so easy before to just sub to natto and get the days matches right after broadcast.
Now I'm stuck with the terrible offerings from NHK, posted with seemingly no regularity.
And subscribing is a no go as they post them on their main channel along with all kinds of other stuff which would clutter my feed beyond recognition.
Hell, last basho they even used a photo of the winner lifting the cup as their thumbnail for the last day. :cripes:

Natto has a very stable and non-dmca-struck account on Rumble these days, presumably setting up there because it's more obscure and less compliant with copyright takedown requests. You just need to keep blinkers on to avoid having to look at the rest of the hellsite.

FYI for everyone using NHK world's highlights to watch: the NHK app that you can download on firestick or smart TVs (or your phone? idk) or whatever is kept up to date. the highlights are uploaded to the on demand section around 9pm CST every day.

you can also watch the NHL world english live feed too, which airs the highlights a couple times before they're on demand. it's all free.

Really enjoyed that basho and final day.

Man Terunofuji just murdered Kirishima. Kotonowaka gave a good go of it but was nearly always on the defensive. It will be great to have him at Ozeki next basho though and have 4 Ozeki.

Takerufuji did so well in his first visit to Juryo.

In the lower divisions 17 year old Tanji who is ranked Sd1 managed a great 6-1 record with 5 of his 6 opponents coming from the Makushita division. he'll return there next basho and I'm interested to see how he develops.

Are they at least updating the videos (a day late) on the NHK World website? We had to resort to that when our DVR didn't recognize this basho as part of a standing series recording.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the NHK highlights on their YT channel, or the app, or the TV channel, it just isn't up 3 seconds after the basho finishes and people hate on them for that.

Makushita, Juryo and Makuuchi, has playoffs for lower divisions when that applies. Can still select the matches and pre-/post-day standings from links in the video. No having your retinas scorched by whatever the gently caress Sneako (a thing I learned about entirely against my will) is up to.

Thank you. And thanks to everyone else suggesting alternatives as well.

My issues with the skeevy right wing sites (or whatever they are) is more about not wanting to make another account to get feed on another insignificant site I only visit a few times a year, or a chat service I don't use and where I'd need to trawl through logs to get to the day's video. There's too many drat sites trying to force you into signing up nowadays.
Where this then led was to just watch something else, and maybe a recap from NHK would get recommended some times.

That said I do like the NHK videos, the English commentary is nice if a little stilted.
