We're at $1300 a month for one toddler in daycare. Were lucky enough we can either go part time or use leave until the second is a little older. But it's going to suck paying roughly $2500-3000 a month for two.... Thankfully by the time they're both in school I'll have finished paying off my wife's student loans too so I'll really feel rich!

yo it's easy just get married to a teacher, then instead of working to put their entire paycheck into the price of daycare you just need to work at close to minimum wage and get a 50% discount so you can put their entire paycheck into daycare anyway

Hippie Hedgehog posted:Yeah, sounds like we're really in complete agreement. My reflection was more about the dosage: Assuming the kid is doing something developmentally "useful" with their screen time, making it 1 hour per day or 2 hours shouldn't really matter due to diminishing returns. An hour a day is plenty to provide spatial awareness in virtual worlds, or whatever, since that hour happens daily for a long time. In that case you should probably side with the lower amount.

Screen time isn't being used here in order for adults to make time to complete household tasks, as might be the case with a toddler.

Time for parenting hard mode. I started showing symptoms of what is probably flu on Sunday, and had a pretty rough day yesterday and especially overnight. My wife had to do an after work activity, so I was solo with the kids. Got them fed, homework done, and threw them in front of the tv and went to bed, thankfully they are old enough that is a viable strategy. Normally we are no screens on school nights but that’s a worthwhile exception. Unfortunately my wife has picked it up as well and worse than me, so I’ll be solo again this evening while she sleeps in the bedroom. Even better, our daughter was complaining about being chilly this morning…

When is a good age to do sleepovers? Our daughter, 5, keeps asking for her friends to sleep over. One of them lives 5 minutes away and I'm good friends with her father so it wouldn't be a big deal if she went home early.

Just beware the kiddo could suddenly become despondent as they get tired. Or they could wake up disoriented and frightened. So you'd want to make sure the friend already trusts you as a parental figure. At that age it's probably best to be fully supervised--if the kids are on the floor then you're on the couch. There's also the potential for bed wetting depending on how overnight training is going. For a friend you know less well probably 8-9 is a better age. Probably would need less direct supervision, but you're not going to get sleep that night either way.

We did a sleep over at 7 for my birthday 30+ years ago with like 12 kids I recall the birthday sleep over being a wild success. My mom to this day refuses to talk about that night. I was described as a "pretty chill kid" YMMV My 5yo nephew does sleep over at our house with our 3yo girl maybe every other month, with his parents two cities (45 min) away hasn't been a problem, but he's known me literally since birth and I've been baby sitting him for 3+ years I remember doing a lot of sleep overs 3rd-5th grade

I credit number blocks for one of the twins, he could do multi-digit addition and subtraction going into kindergarten, and explain how he broke it up in his head. His invitation to move to a high ability class next year wasn’t exactly a surprise. And he also just delivered our first projectile vomit of the day! Thankfully on hard surfaces except for a tiny corner of an area rug.

Has anyone got any advice for a 3.5 year old who won't poo in the toilet? Pee is fine but she has poo accidents frequently. We've taken dresses away and given them back one by one when she has a good day. We've made her help clean her pants. Both of these helped but she's back to accidents. We're lucky her school (I'm a teacher in Dubai, she gets tuition at my school through my benefits package, so she's in full time) are really supportive and say not to worry. But I do. She says she doesn't like poo and she doesn't eat much veg, or anything much really, so wonder if it's that.

It took our (then) 3.5 yo about six months of convincing to even try using the potty for poop. She was all onboard with the peeing in the potty part for months before that. There was a transition period when she would like to wear undies all day but then ask for a pull up to poop. It’s going to be a slow process and negotiation and then it will suddenly happen one day. At least it was our experience, but also echoed by many of our parent friends: one day she finally decided to try the potty, declared that she will never poop in the pull-up again after a successful try, and that was it. Going strong for over 6 months now with no exceptions but a single accident caused by a tummy bug of some sort. Good luck.

Has anyone used diapers as a travel crutch? Out kiddo (3.25) is on the smaller side, second smallest in her class and when she says the potty is too big I kind of agree with her. Having her go in the big potty in public restrooms is a bit of a stretch and carrying around a baby size potty on airplanes and subways doesn't seem realistic. What do

We let the kids wear diapers during travel while they were potty training because the last thing we wanted on vacation was to deal with accidents. It didn't affect our kids' overall progress. That said, we would still try to bring them to a restroom whenever possible and have them actually try. We had an adapter that we put into the big seat to make it child-sized that easily fit in a backpack. (Something like this, though not this exact one.)

We’re pausing potty training until we get my kid’s kidney/urinary tract situation sorted out. Any random fever from school/play dates/etc needs to be checked for a UTI and, let me tell you, trying to get a 3yo who rules their bladder with an iron fist to pee into a cup is quite the quest. The control also extends to #2 - we have to go HAM on the miralax or else we won’t get any action for days. “Do you need to poop?” “Yes.” “Don’t you feel better after you poop?” “Yes.” “Does it hurt to poop?” “No.” “Why don’t you poop and go play instead of laying around?” “I DON’T WANNA”

The biggest issue we have run into when out of the house has been the automatic flush sensors causing the toilet to trigger unexpectedly and that spooking him. I recommend bringing along a bit of masking tape or similar to cover them up.

I had tiny kids who potty trained early. I was kinda grossed out by the travel potties so I just always went into the stall and physically helped balance them until they were bigger and/or rock-solid. At home we had a little potty seat built into the toilet seat they could use, and at school they had small kid sized toilets.

On a related note, we also had a small sit-down potty in the footwell of the car, and ended up using it a good few times even after our daughter was toilet trained. You can stop anywhere, set up the small potty behind the car, and go to town.

Pham Nuwen posted:oh good another piece of Amazon plastic trash I can look forward to entering my home in a year or so True but this product may not deserve your ire. This seat rules for traveling or going to Grandma's house where they might not want a permanent toddler seat. We had to break ours out for a week long hospital stay too. Just stow it in the kid's day bag. Hovering your kid for a pee is fine but kneeling down and holding them up, staring them in the face while they poop, isn't great lol. Re going to diapers for travel: We never had to do this because we didn't take any trips right after potty training but I would've been extremely hesitant to do so. A big part of our potty training was that there are no more diapers anymore and you're a big boy now who doesn't wear them. I'd be afraid of them going back to relying on it. Accidents suck and you especially never want one away from home base but they are also part of the learning process. Rufio fucked around with this message at 20:16 on Jan 31, 2024 |
