Old Kentucky Shark posted:OG Law & Order was fairly low key for a courtroom drama up through the Lenny Brisco years (so season 13 or so). The cases were usually murky, with the audience not being given any special information that the police/lawyers didn’t have, and it was often unclear if the person on trial was actually guilty or not. The moral uncertainty and the more professional nature of the characters - you only ever saw the characters at work, and often knew little of their personal lives* - were part of the show’s calling cards I dunno, the very first episode of OG Law and Order ends with them giving a well respected surgeon a field sobriety test on the stand, and he can't even touch his nose because he got stupid drunk at lunch that day. It was pretty SHOCKING court room stuff right from the get go. That being said, it was a great moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJHsuwesDR8

I think the other good thing about Law and Order is that it's not exactly pro-American justice system and very often the prosecution losses or the cops gently caress up. At least in early pre-SVU Law and Order.

I was looking for a show that had already finished not to binge but... kind of the opposite. Something I can put on as many times as I want before bed, that will hold my attention and be something I'm at least a little invested in, but that I can turn of half-way through the episode to get back to next time. Anyways I found Better Things. It was something I had dismissed when it was airing because it looked like one of the many darker family dramadies that came out around the time. Learning that it was a Louis C. K. show didn't help because I didn't actually like Louie. But it's pretty fun.

Something I think is kind of funny how much Reacher has raised Alan Ritchson's profile. He's in a new Guy Ritchie movie and I saw an official promotional video from the studio that was just "hey look, Alan Ritchson is in this."

Now he’s a massive success over several mediums and has the freedom to do whatever he wants, so he probably feels better about going back and doing something like that.

No one is too high level for anything. It just comes down to the individual's ego and whether or not they actually want to do something. Leaving the show might have been what he wanted/needed to do at the time, but it doesn't mean he didn't enjoy himself when he was there.

I stopped watching Community after season 3. I feel like S3 was the turning point where the show had really gone up its own rear end and started doing the thing I loving hate in comedies where it becomes very self-referential. Are the later seasons any good?

I like how each season finale from 3 onwards is written as a series finale, each worse than the last.

I don't know if you're into genre stuff, but Supernatural, X-Files, and Stargate are shows that have a billion episodes that are kinda just chillin out with the characters going on adventures vibe.

MST3k!!!! Perfect to fall asleep to, and you'll never remember all the jokes so you can watch them over and over. Youtube now has a permanent stream and almost all the old episodes are free on the Gizmodoplex. I use it as second screen entertainment for management, factory, and map games and it's perfect.

I’m still super annoyed that Hulu doesn’t have playlist functionality. I would often have FXX on as I work in the afternoon since it’s just KOTH, Simpsons, and Bob’s Burgers. All of that stuff and more is on Hulu. I just wish I could dump all the Archer, American Dad, Bob’s Burgers, KOTH, select seasons of the Simpsons into a massive playlist and hit shuffle. That would be peak background TV for me.

bull3964 posted:I’m still super annoyed that Hulu doesn’t have playlist functionality. I have been complaining about this forever, especially because I wan't holiday playlists. Throw on all the Bob's Thanksgiving episodes while I cook, or all the Treehouse of Horror's during Halloween. Then they went and did exactly that, except when you play an episode, it doesn't play the next one on the list, it just plays the next one in the series. So if you want to watch say all the Bob's Burgers Christmas episodes from that list, when you play Season 2, Episode 12 the next one to play isn't Season 3, Episode 11, its Season 2 Episode 13. To actually use the "playlist" you have to back out and manually select the next one. Like, they got exactly halfway to a good idea.

# ? Feb 1, 2024 21:28 |
I think this is a bad suggestion for a show you can turn off halfway through an episode and pick up later, since it's a highly serialized show, and each episode is tightly plotted around one character, through the current timeline and flashbacks. Like, it may be the worst suggestion. Unless that's the joke.

It’s a disconnect between how they want us to consume content vs how we actually want to. I somehow managed to get on the Disney Insider’s thing for Disney+ and get surveys from time to time and the questions are just nonsensical. You get stuff like “how easy is it to discover content on Disney+ based on the mood you are in”. That’s not how I or anyone else watches stuff. Sure, I’ll occasionally open a service without knowing EXACTLY what I want to watch and browse, but at most I’ll do that based on genre category or new releases or something. “How easy do you find it to discover content based on studio”. You are projecting a brand loyalty on me that doesn’t exist. I don’t fire up a streaming service and go “you know what I’m in the mood for today? A lionsgate movie. Doesn’t matter which. I just know Lionsgate will entertain me right now.” They jump through all these permutations on how to serve up content and yet their management tools remain some variation of “Continue Watching” or “Watchlist”. I can make a playlist on Youtube, why not Hulu or Disney+ or Max?

Are the later seasons any good? I just did a post S3 Community watch for the first time a couple years ago, and found it to be pretty alright! There's a nadir in jokes and cast interactions in the 4th season but there were funny moments even there, and S5 and S6 has some of the best bits of the show (Koogler, for one) though it is far from being as strong episode to episode as S1-3. Still worth watching and forming your opinion on. These episodes do fly by. e: the main problem is the constant cast changes around Annie, Britta, Jeff and Abed, epecially when they hit on someone really funny (Jonathon Banks, Keith David, Paget Brewster).
