Got Dave’s Picks 49 in the house. Finally have “Healy sabotages Bobby’s vocals with preposterous amounts of fx” and “Jerry’s voice is even worse than you remembered” in the highest of fidelities. I kid, kinda, I like 85 as much as the next degenerate and they’re perfectly fine shows from the era, and both set 2s have nice high points. But yeah I don’t think I’ll be able to sell this one on Discogs to fund my retirement in a few years.

Dead and Co is a cash grab nostalgia band for boomers. That’s the gross part. Are you saying that beautiful, pristine Las Vegas, Nevada has been sullied by commercialism? If they did a residency at MSG it’s the same shithead owner.

Here are the dates I feel like I don't need to explain why the Grateful Dead of all bands doing 14 shows in a multi billion dollar vanity project is nasty poo poo Also scroll up, the visuals are trash

And 2, yup U2 sure suck and it looks like they cobbled together something quick for the inaugural shows at a brand new, one of a kind facility. And yup, if you wait until 2 days before a super sold out show to buy scalper tickets, they’re pretty expensive!

The Sphere is just a gargantuan animated billboard. I attended the F1 race in Vegas recently and none of the signs distracted me except I sat directly opposite the sphere and just had advertisements blaring in my face and there was nowhere on the track I could look where it wasnt in my peripheral. And they werent showing vids from the race or live stats on the Sphere, it was all ads. I dont think I need to tell you how the MGM grand is different than having a building sized Travis Scott leering over the city (or in my case for a race!)

To me this essentially seems no different than running all inclusive Cancun resort festivals in terms of trying to milk cash from an aging/affluent fan base (I consider myself in that fan base tbh). And for the people that are upset because they thought the San Francisco shows were supposed to be the last ones ever, that football has been yanked away so many times, idk what else you should expect at this point.

I've never been able to afford (or justify I guess) Dead and Co tickets and this just solidifies them as being an act that I'm ok not seeing. I do want to see Oteil in some lineup, and Bob again since I only ever saw him in Ratdog. But I think those opportunities are common and there's a good chance of getting to see both of them with Billy Strings some day.

Didnt they just finish their final farewell tour or whatever? I'd be pissed if I had gone out of my way to see them on that then they do this, but I suppose that's not surprising. Plenty of bands have multiple "farewell" tours, I saw KISS on one lol

I read Phil's book over the summer and boy oh boy did he harp on about the band never having money. They'd play shows, make money, get ripped off, play shows, lose money, get ripped off, drop albums to pay off debts, drop albums because it was less expensive than touring, tour anyway. Jerry slipped into his coma and they were back on the road that same year in part because they were failing to keep their company(ies) solvent. I just can't get that worked up about people cashing in on Grateful Dead music at some luxury venue - least of all the band's survivors.

Got to see the Codetalkers with Jimmy Herring & Col Bruce back in 2005 at Skippers Smokehouse which is an amazing outdoor venue here in Tampa, that was rad. Did Wannee Fest every year for a bunch of years and a highlight was always Otiel and the Peacemakers doing a day set since he was there to play with the Allmans. The Saturday midnight show after the Allman Bros was always Derek and Susan Trucks' "Soul Stew Revival", which was really a proto- Tedeshchi Trucks Band back when Derek still had DTB and Susan was doing her own thing. Those were absolutely amazing festivals, especially the year we got Ratdog. Got this lineup coming to town soon and hoping I can make it but being a parent really complicates such things at this point in my life. Jerry slipped into his coma and they were back on the road that same year in part because they were failing to keep their company(ies) solvent. That part stuck out to me too - the fact that he (IIRC) was pretty anxious when the band took hiatuses or when Jerry died, as there wasn't any savings. On one hand, hard to believe, but once you get under the surface, you see this huge rudderless, bloated business with bad decisions and lack of leadership. They had grown too much to stop touring, which would have impacted the livelihoods of those in the org. Ended up impacting Jerry's life the most, one could say. I can't blame the remaining members for wanting to continue touring and cashing in on the name, but also at this point, I'd figure that they are probably reasonably set, especially in their advanced age. In the Netflix doc, Bob was driving a late model Tesla and Billy lives in Kuai. I guess what I don't get is leading your fanbase along that you're going to stop doing shows, but then you turn around and announce more shows. Hey, it's their lives and business, so thats fine I guess. I could see the appeal of seeing the various Dead offshoots with original members, but personally I'd much rather see a young cover band firing on all cylinders and playing the good ol' tunes at tempo. I really like this thread

You could say it would be better to just listen to newer jam bands, but they make the worst music ever dreamed up. I’d rather listen to a very bad Grateful Dead cover band than pigeons playing ping pong on their best day.

Didn't the Dead do a farewell show in 74 when they needed a break? I said I was leaving Facebook once 12 years ago and then didn't. So whomst among us? I wish there were Dead tribute bands in my area. I might see Oteil this spring but I'll be driving hours for the privilege. It bothers me more than it should that my avenue for sharing the dead with people I know has been covers and tribute bands.

My favorite local Dead cover band is a bunch of retirement age dudes that exclusively play Pigpen era stuff. Even my wife doesn't mind going to see them. The young dude Dead cover bands here are very bland.
