I know this observation is nothing new but I'm pretty glad I don't have to fold over my neck skin and try to stuff the flab down into my shirt collars. I think I would become a turtleneck connoisseur if I had to consider that a light breeze might make my turkey neck flap about.

Not sure how ownership works in school libraries though. having worked in university libraries it is pretty much the same in all areas. ethically, you shouldn't do it, of course. but historically, many libraries have censored texts, removed pages or illustrations, etc because of the personal preferences of the librarian or bibliographer or complaints from the community. one place i worked in was notorious for having any book cover depicting any kind of nudity rebound simply because the bibliographer in that subject (romance languages and literatures) wasn't comfortable with it, and this was a major research library. other places removed any sort of sexually suggestive plates or illustrations, unless it was in a field like art history or medicine, which was also kind of wild. again, it's not best practices in the field at all, and most of the places i worked at fortunately didn't do that. but it is there and is more prevalent than people realize.

I feel like that's a very slippery slope before you start fundamentally changing the content of the book but it's probably not worth it for publishers to go after individual institutions for relatively minor changes. We can only hope moms4liberty are dumb enough to commit copyright infringement and publish their own versions or something I guess VV that's true. And I guess you can't void the warranty on a book. That jeans example falls more under right to repair, vs. bowdlerizing the ip of someone though. But I realize the legal distinction may not exist. Also the libraries making these changes are also distributing the book to the public, so it's not quite the same as someone ripping out pages or doodling in a personal copy. The fact that they don't charge money probably gives them some leeway and legal protection id imagine. free hubcaps fucked around with this message at 13:17 on Feb 3, 2024 |

It’s also a slippery slope in the other direction if you let companies dictate what people can do with things they paid for and own Like imagine a clothing company saying «you are not allowed to patch holes in these jeans» ymgve fucked around with this message at 13:08 on Feb 3, 2024 |

Honestly not too surprised, it seems like a smaller field, so people letting it get to their head that no one is around to notice/stop them from doing what pleases them strikes me as an inherent risk. If someone is maintaining a collection, their tastes will come into play and define some of the policies. I'm kinda more surprised it doesn't happen more often/more flagrantly. That speaks to the integrity of the field overall, which is cool. StrangersInTheNight fucked around with this message at 13:10 on Feb 3, 2024 |

Troublemaker posted:In degrees of harsh swears, is cock > dick? And where would prick fall on that graph? I'd say in a vacuum cock and dick are roughly equivalent, but cock tends to be used more in a sexual/ smutty context ("she wanted to get plowed by his beer-can cock!") while dick gets used more generally ("I heard he got punched in the dick"), so that might tilt the scales depending on your point of view. In the US prick is pretty much exclusively an insult, I think in the UK it's exactly synonymous with dick but I can't say for sure.

WRT those censored kids books "protecting the youth" from the evils of a cartoon picture of a goblin buttcrack as he hoses the glitter off his clothes: I actually feel for the censor who has to do the covering up. Because you know it's some 65 year old librarian named Joan who likes books, likes education, likes small children, and thinks that books are a good way of educating said children. So volunteered her time to help check out the books to be used for that purpose. Then she has to go through the submissions of crazy people claiming that a picture book for 5 year olds is pornography, then negotiate the minefield of politically motivated unworkable laws to try and get a little kid to put down their iPad for a second and maybe have a good time in the library. And whet scares me the most about them is that before, I thought they were just performative flag wavers. Shouting "we must protect the kids from the evil pornographers and perverts!" by decrying anything that dared show that LGBT people exist. Which is bad and evil and should be rallied against. Sure. But nutjobs using magnifying glasses to look at the silly pictures in picture books for 5 year olds, and declaring that it is morally ruinous? That's hosed up

If these people really wanted to help k-8 education, they'd ban electronic devices. No more ipad, no more phone, no more laptop, no more calculator. Of course there is a time when these things become relevant and useful tools for education but its not k-8. Exceptions for classes teaching students how to type or use a computer.
