Camnecting rods What I want to know is how does it work if the engine stops perfectly at TDC or BDC

If I understood your concern correctly, given the age of the design I assume its kick start, and some over complicated mechanical solutions was incorporated by the German engineers. Or you need to kick twice to get it to start as it won’t be at t/Bdc on the second kick.

Here is an Unicorn. A German engineers fever dream. Why do I say fever dream? quote:Some technical compromises had to be made to accommodate the G450X’s unusual clutch arrangement. One consequence is that the engine's crankshaft rotates backwards instead of forwards, as is typical. quote:With the design brief specifying both low weight and the improved handling brought by a longer swingarm, the required space was liberated by moving the multi-plate clutch to the right-hand side of the crankshaft. As a consequence, the clutch basket drives the gearbox, instead of the other way around. quote:On enduro bikes made by established competition, the front drive sprocket is located forward of the swingarm pivot, meaning that drive chain tension changes dynamically according to rear suspension movement. In turn, this means the drive chain must always incorporate a certain amount of slack. BMW solved this problem using its Coaxial Traction system, with the front drive sprocket located on the same rotational axis as the swingarm pivot. This is facilitated by the swingarm’s locating shaft running through a hollow gearbox output shaft. This arrangement allows the drive chain to be run with minimal slack (around 5mm, as opposed to the typical 25 to 35mm). This reduces chain lash without danger of overstressing the gearbox output shaft bearings, and reduces overall stress on the gearbox assembly. All quotes from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_G450X

Lol BMW 'solved' this 'problem' I'm not gonna link it here but suffice it to say their engineers are the dwarves from oglaf and will engineer the gently caress out of anything whether you want them to or not Slavvy fucked around with this message at 23:07 on Jul 22, 2023 |

Having helped replace the front sprocket on a G450, it is much more simple than you'd think.

I mean, it's not like doing it on a "normal" bike, but it took us about 45 minutes, having never done it before and following a guide off of the interwebs. It's not like replacing the clutch on an older BMW K-bike or something.

Pro tip: on most bikes it's four bolts for the cover, two for the sprocket, slide the wheel forwards to loosen the chain and you're done. Sometimes you don't even have to take the shift lever off (2 more bolts)

Have you considered that by making something 3x as complicated and time consuming, they've realized a massive 1% performance improvement under favourable circumstances?

I don't know if this fits here but it's a 1940s, post-WWII, German "moped" with an 18cc 2-stroke diesel engine to power it and you control the cylinder compression with the handlebars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzouISFTHvM edit: it isn't shown actually attempting to run until the very end of the video, just so you know. Yeah, it was one of those post WW2 poverty spec things that would sorta kinda run on any type of hydrocarbon you could get your hands on, in carpet bombed Germany. There's a Miele (yeah, from the vacuum cleaners and washing machines) for sale in the Netherlands for €1800 or so. I am very tempted, but considering it is literally a bicycle, likely without frame number, with a tacked on engine, i doubt i could get it road legal. And if i can't smoke out the streets with it, i'm not gonna spend *that* much money on it. I also found 2 engines together for around €450.

Been following this account for a while and whenever this bike pops up I get confused. It sits right on the line between hate and love for me. Like it's so close to being a bike from some anime that I watched as a kid... https://x.com/henken_bike/status/1756700425451962632?s=20 *edit: and then I find out it was used as the base for a couple of bikes in the mostly beautifully aesthetic but otherwise wank Ghost in the Shell live action. https://www.asphaltandrubber.com/lifestyle/honda-nm4-vultus-ghost-in-the-shell/ Olympic Mathlete fucked around with this message at 11:38 on Feb 12, 2024 |
