What is breaking is that they captured 40 dudes. For context it is probably more significant than Ukraine capturing Robotyne but not much.

It'll make them happy and content, that sort of thing.

I am disgusted and outraged that Burkina Faso is now taking all the gold, that is actually already theirs. Surely they wouldn't like to reconsider and send that say 100 tons of gold overseas to be processed? We've processed all 80 tons of your gold sir. Your shipment of 50 tons of gold will be arriving next month.

Do they have the means to construct gold refineries though? I can't imagine they'll be able to finance it without selling ore in the meantime.

It's not that big a job to set up a gold extraction plant. The question is whether they continue to sell ore in the meantime just to finance the government. It is less than 20% of government income though. Burkina Faso has a debt to gdp ratio of only ~50-60% so short term borrowing seems possible backed by future gold sales. According to this article Burkina Faso's new gold extraction plant is being constructed in partnership with Marena Gold, an 100% Malian owned company which operates it's own gold extraction plant in Mali. I found this interview with CEO and founder Ismael Siby, which states that for an initial investment of about $3.3 million, they are currently extracting 6 tons of refined gold a year in Mali. While looking for this information I also found an article claiming Burkina Faso has just opened a mine waste processing plant. quote:Burkina Faso, governed by a military regime, on Tuesday opened its first mining waste processing facility Weka has issued a correction as of 19:59 on Feb 11, 2024 |
