It makes sense politically/ideologically, so that nobody can't point at exceptions you're okay with and go "Oh, so it's not really about baby murder since you're okay with it in some instances. You just want to take women's autonomy away!" Not that it makes it any less reprehensible.

He tried the whole "life begins and conception" thing and I told him that what he said had no basis in either science nor religion and that ultimately the goal of those who think like he does is to use pregnancy as a bludgeon with which to scare women out of having sex out of wedlock. He didn't have anything to say after that.

I get what you're saying, but I'm firmly in the camp of people who don't for a second believe any real majority of these people think abortion is "murder". They're the same people who will gladly let a fully born child starve to death because feeding it would be "socialism".
