"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" is from freakin' 2003. It's another one of those phrases that's so ingrained, I would've sworn it had been around my entire life.

What's interesting to me is that slogan wasn't really around before then? I always assumed they just adopted it since everyone was saying it anyway, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I’ve heard people use that line on TV when I was a kid in the 90s. It’s probably older than that, too e: on the other hand, looking into it online pretty much everything seems to point to 2003 being the origin of the slogan so I guess my memory ain’t all that reliable Kit Walker has a new favorite as of 17:41 on Feb 8, 2024 |

2003 is the origin of the slogan, and it's considered one of the most successful marketing efforts of all time, basically because of what's already been mentioned, that it feels like it's been around forever. That phrase is credited with more or less saving most of the Strip from being torn down for timeshares. Now the timeshares are two blocks off the strip, on land they were able to get cheap after the 2008 collapse. Capitalism finds a way, baby.

Ehh, early ‘00s sounds pretty right to me, I don’t remember hearing it before then, and when it was introduced I heard it all the goddamn time like everyone was going to Vegas on the regular to do some serious dirt. Like gently caress off guys, it’s not that salacious, Vegas is more lame and tacky (well, it’s always been tacky as poo poo) than anything else nowadays

How do anyone who would say that figure it'll stay in vegas. Like dude, I know exactly what kind of poo poo you enjoy, I have eyes and you don't have a sense of fashion

One of the most famous cities in the US being a testament to mankind's hubris in the middle of a desert that was largely built as a tax scam by organized crime is pure distilled America. Of course now the Cosa Nostra has been replaced by large multinational corporations, who are slightly less murderous, as the owner of most of the casinos but also now there's a gargantuan spherical advertisement billboard tower over everything. Primo stuff and I really want to go there before the desert swallows it because it sounds like a really weird place to be.

It kind of felt noteworthy at the time because Las Vegas had spent the 90s Disneyfying itself. So the slogan really seemed like a change in direction.

The wife and I are going to grab a couple of other shows on a long weekend, but neither of us drink heavily or gamble nor are easily persuaded to do so. Weird Vegas seems way more fun than Seedy Vegas. Eddy Burback did a pilgrimage out to Vegas specifically to experience The Sphere about two months ago. I guess if you're going there in a few weeks then you should probably avoid videos like this so you can go in blind but for everyone else, here's a big ol' video about what it's like to visit the Las Vegas Sphere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN63DDD9Y04

The lyrics of that old electro song wasn't ever "push me and then just hurt me till I can get my satisfaction". It was "and then just touch me". I always thought it was this weird BDSM anthem. This one, clip fairly NWS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0fkNdPiIL4

When I travel I like to be constantly on the move. Only staying in one place for at most three or so days then moving on. Otherwise I get bored. Moving is the closest thing to being free. Also I'm a weirdo.
