There's also a brief appearance by Werner Herzog!

I ended up seeing it (Orion and the Dark) because of this thread and the positive RT score and bounced off. I just felt it was too scatterbrained, like it had no real plot or message behind it. I kinda liked what it did with some of the framing device near the end, but the rest of the movie was a miss.

I don't understand what mention of Saltburn is supposed to be shorthand for. I saw the movie and enjoyed it. Didn't really see it as any kind of cultural touchstone.

Read it as "movie that is extremely mid but beloved by people who think Euphoria is transgressive"

I kinda liked what it did with some of the framing device near the end, but the rest of the movie was a miss.

I think the movie covers its own rear end with this halfway through when it's revealed that adult Orion is still a little bit afraid of the dark because it straight-up tells the audience "hey, this story really isn't gonna wrap things up neatly, it might not even resolve, it's gonna be weird and messy and we're just gonna let it be that way." Which you could read as a cop-out (I do too a little), but I think it's more interesting as a middle-finger to more traditional children's media (especially Pixar) that likes to resolve things cleanly and easily by the end of the hero's journey.

If the movie does have a message, it's probably "you know what kid, you probably aren't going to conquer all your fears 100%, even if you meet cute anthromorphized versions of them. poo poo's always gonna be weird and hard, and that's fine, too. You'll probably be okay. Probably."

Another way it does this "poo poo just is" storytelling is when you look at the team of anthropomorphized... night stuff, some of them aren't necessarily good things. Like two characters are "Insomnia" and "Unexplained Noises." I kept expecting there to be an in-universe reason for the existence of Insomnia. Another movie would make him noble, maybe show him waking someone up when their house is about to catch fire or something. But no, "sometimes you can't sleep, it sucks. This dude's the personification of Insomnia. He just is. This is just his job." Sometimes there's just weird noises. Sometimes you just have nightmares, there's no reason the Personification of Dreams has to give them to you, it just is."

This works as a concept within the weird anti-message of the movie and also in the inner framing device that none of this is "really" happening in the movie, these are all just characters in a story that a guy is making up as he goes along, he's not gonna explain it all.

So I don't think it's an amazing movie, but I think it's a unique one. Ido find this level of realism (nihilism?) somewhat refreshing in a kid's movie. Kids deserve to have something challenging now and then. I just don't know who the hell this is gonna appeal to.

Orion and the Dark doesn’t really manage to transcend the limitations of the contemporary 3D animated kids movie stuff but it’s definitely a cut above the average, Kaufman adds a lot of clever humour and the metastory about storytelling is real good. I really don’t understand why Paul Walter Hauser is doing such a strong Seth Rogen impression though

Rogen has gone on record as saying he doesn't know why people keep hiring him for voice roles when he categorically never does voices. ("Do you want Donkey Kong to sound like Seth Rogen, 'cause that's what you're gonna get!") I'm sure it wouldn't bother him too much if suddenly there was a guy that would sound like him for way cheaper.

Having seen saltburn it really is just Euphoria for people who thought it wasn't white enough. Like of course the kinkiest things a super rich white nepobaby can imagine are period sex and two men being attracted to each other.
It's not even transgressive or offensive when compared to the last 30 years of film, its just stupid and bad.

Punkin Spunkin
Jan 1, 2010
But what pissed me off most is all the controversy and people being like "I admit it's gross but I love it cuz it's campy trash" made me imagine some kinda Baz or John Waters type spectacle and it's not Baz it's just boring.
Like it compares poorly to The Rules of Attraction for every moment of its runtime and ultimately you just realize you're watching another movie in this glass onion/the menu/triangle of sadness type vein but it's a super rich person imagining gay Iago destroying their super rich family.

The worst thing about 00s and 10s trash movies is how dull, self-serious and washed-out they got, even the more ridiculous ones are just full of mean-spirited 'humour' and misanthropy.

That's what I loved about The Beekeeper, I saw people bashing it being like q anon-y but that's silly to me. Imagine whatever nepobaby president's kid you want, it's just fantastic seeing villains begging for their lives with NFTs and an action main character willing to beat the poo poo out of (or just outright shoot) cops/FBI agents. There's even a dig on the Navy Seals lol. On the nose and cartoonish, sure, but surprisingly spry and fun for Kurt Wimmer. It's this fun avenue of 50 something year olds dunking on young tech bros in defense of boomers with decaying minds who get tricked by cyber scammers. Mamma Mia gimme like two sequels.

Oooooooooooh!

I didn’t like The Beekeeper for a few reasons, but the big one was that it felt like they filmed 50 minutes of Jason Statham’s story and realized it was way too short, so they added reshoots with the FBI agents slowly following him and filling time. Their scenes were horrrrrrribly dull and felt like pure padding.

Punkin Spunkin
Jan 1, 2010
Yeah I agree that the fbi agents tracking him down were the weakest parts (including some of their back and forth). I feel like I encounter that fairly often in movie narrative structures, where you have the interesting and fun plotline and then you have the blah cops/fed characters an hour behind it.

The biggest issue is the effects which range from why? To HUH? But I guess it makes sense for a first (and only?) director. But it’s still a good time. The performances of Giamatti and Owen alone are just perfect.
