Watched the episode. The comparison to the Australia episode of The Pacific is apt, but I think this was a much stronger episode of TV than that one. I quite enjoyed it, especially in how it depicted the way that the war follows people around even when they're on leave or behind the lines (which I think was the downside to the Pacific episode since it really didn't touch on that side of things).

I agree, it did give us a view of what the war was like for the normal people of England. I assume the England we saw in BoB was more rural, so less likely to get bombed like London would be. Though it does seem weird that they'd get a 2 day pass to London, where they could end up dead from a German bomb vs staying on base that isn't getting bombed. It was a drastic difference compared to the Australia episode where they were out of the fight so it's just them living their lives and also there's some American Marines in town.

I dunno he seemed overall pretty positive about the depiction and most of his issues were with errors in the CGI models for the gun barrels and the overly simplistic gunsights

XYZAB posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XnvlmcBiAk Luckily it seems like these are all effects mistakes. I assume they had experts on the sets to make sure the actors were doing things correctly for the time, and maybe the effects people didn't have that as much. But they could likely fix these things in 20 years when the show gets remastered for 8k or whatever. They could re-render the gun barrels without the sight posts and the K3 gunsight could just have the filter and the range finder sight added in.

So what was the big deal with the Norden bombsight? I was watching the third episode again while I was doing chores, and the bombardier even made a big thing about it when they were lightening the plane, he was all pissed they had to throw his baby overboard. I can't tell what it's actually doing, though. I mean, okay, the guy seems to be lining up his little target on the buildings below, but how that all relates to a bunch of bombs falling haphazardly out of the doors I don't understand.

I mean, okay, the guy seems to be lining up his little target on the buildings below, but how that all relates to a bunch of bombs falling haphazardly out of the doors I don't understand. The Norden bomb sight is an analog computer that is able to take the plane's altitude, speed, and side slip into account and point directly at where it thinks the bombs will hit when released. When going for a bombing run, the bombardier has control over the plane via the autopilot. He can point the plane where it needs to be and even fly the plane on a parallel path to the target to account for wind all while the bomb sight stays pointed where the bombs should hit. He waits until the target gets to the crosshairs of the bomb sight and releases the bombs and they hopefully land where they are supposed to. It wasn't as accurate as Norden claimed it was, but it was very advanced and did a decent job. Here is a training video about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=143vi97a4tY Cojawfee fucked around with this message at 07:11 on Feb 10, 2024 |

I thought this was a pretty good episode, though I did come in expecting it to be quieter than the others so far. The fakeout with Buck's death doesn't really have much of an emotional impact, but hopefully it'll lead to some more interesting character development. One notable thing was that with the exception of a few dodgy shots of the crew in Africa at the very beginning, the CGI and compositing was overall way better in this episode--the whole sequence with fixing the magneto while taxiing looked way better than some earlier sequences.

Spoilers So if Buck was shot down this week and Bucky is shot down in the next episode are they gonna follow them through their time at Stalag Luft III for the rest of the series and keep them as the focus characters? With the attrition that the 100th Bomb Group endures is there anyone notable who will take over as the lead POV character for the air sequences?

The bombsight was a highly secretive development as well that that was thought to give American bombers a huge advantage, so there was a big deal about not letting it fall into enemy hands.

..accounts like this (from the 398th website) where they make it through a horrific mission and then almost get got the next day by a V1 while on leave in London are just . My mom's uncle was a B-17 ball turret gunner in the 398th, 602 squadron who died over Belgium on his 17th mission in late Oct 1944 when the plane was torn in half by flak. Only the radioman survived (POW).

This is 1000% not going to happen, they're just going to re-do the CGI with the exact same mistakes and add all new mistakes of their own. When they remastered From the Earth to the Moon I thought to myself "I wonder if they'll fix the CG mistake that one of the fx guys fessed up to in an online chat back in 1998." When the retrorocket package on Alan Shepard's flight fired in the first episode, the CG showed all three firing at once when in reality they fired sequentially. In the new CG, they still fire all at once. And then it shows the spacecraft falling back towards the coast of Florida instead of the middle of the Atlantic. They also modeled the spacecraft off the one at the Udvar-Hazy annex of the Air and Space Museum, which has an extended duration consumables kit attached to the retrorocket package that was never used on any Mercury flight. Also in several of the shots showing the Earth from the moon, they made an utterly incomprehensible error where the terminator crosses the surface going east/west instead of north/south. Daytime in North America, nighttime in South America. Just... what? McNally fucked around with this message at 04:37 on Feb 11, 2024 |

Germans were sending everyone up, by 1944 their pilot training was a joke and by november they had more planes than pilots. The escorts did their job too, and probably hit a shitload on the ground. People tend to forget they were fighting a two front war, and the Luftwaffe was having a oval office of a time on the Eastern front too.

A big problem for the Germans (and the Japanese) was that they had their pilots flying until they got killed. Which means a lot of pilots racked up and impressive number of kills, with a lot of German aces scoring 80-100+ victories. But that means they were flying missions, not training other pilots. American pilots would get a few victories and then would be rotated out to go back and train newer pilots on what they had learned. Check out the list of WWII aces for Germany and the US. A bunch of people in Germany have tens of victories with some with over 100. The Americans have 5-10, with some getting over 20 and I think Richard Bong was the highest with 40. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_aces_from_Germany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_aces_from_the_United_States

There is also an issue of overclaiming kills. It's not as if there was a way to separate who was shooting at whom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schweinfurt%E2%80%93Regensburg_mission#Results_and_losses quote:Spitfire pilots claimed 13 German fighters shot down and P-47 pilots claimed 19.[20][note 4][note 5] Gunners on the bombers claimed 288 fighters shot down,[24][note 6] but Luftwaffe records showed only 25 to 27 were lost.

Yeah to double down on this, you cannot trust kill counts claimed by pilots of the time, they are always wildly inaccurate as we can see postwar when we get to see the opposite side's loss records. It's the same reason the Luftwaffe thought Britain must be down to its last few dozen fighters and were on the verge of victory earlier on in the Battle of Britain and oops no turns out there's lots left still.
