Also, the World Boss Portal Device, that's amazing if you're a world boss train junkie/degenerate like me. Great if you have alts and need to teleport all over.

If they made a "Teleport to Any Strike Mission" scroll, kinda like how you can select a teleport location at Mistlock, I'd gladly swipe for that.

This is exactly how I feel about ArcDPS, yes. I'd install it again if we did a goon raid/training and people wanted to learn or know about their performance, other than that, I'm good.

BlishHUD is ridiculously good, seems to be more stable than Arc and it's a must-have if you're doing collection stuff like trying to work towards a Skyscale.

Oh jeez, this is a bummer. I'm at the final base game story quest (Victory or Death) and I've been getting to know and like Trahearne - he's no Tybalt, but he's cool.

And I'm expecting a big finale with my allies and a confrontation and...

wait why are these clowns here, hi destiny's edge, why should I care about you when you've spent the entire time off throwing tantrums instead of fighting with the pact?

e: and it's a fetch quest! It's always a fetch quest but jeez

e2: okay I really enjoy GW2 and some of the main story storytelling has been really good, but that final mission was a whiff on multiple fronts and kind of a perfect example of what the game gets wrong in the base game wrt storytelling.

- weird time gaps where things happen off-screen that you aren't involved in that feel like they come out of nowhere (e.g. the new airship and super cannon we used)
- character development for characters you don't care about (this is a destiny's edge problem)
- everyone celebrates you even though you didn't really do anything? i just stood around while the NPCs saved the day

idk this isn't a deep review or anything, I'm just disappointed, and faintly annoyed because I had to spend like 500 minutes waiting for the dragons to quit flying in circles and become targets so I could engage with gameplay.

The writing gets better as the game goes on starting with Living Story Season 2 which was the lead-up to Heart of Thorns. I still won't say it's really much better until Path of Fire (which is pretty solid) and Living World Season 4 is the point where it could be considered "good" although it kind of slides right off in Icebrood Saga thanks to the pandemic making everything a mess. I know I played through End of Dragons when it came out but outside of a few major plot points I basically can't remember the story and I think that means it was okay instead of being offensively bad like Living Story Season 1 and the latter half of Icebrood?

The one downside is they move to having a lot of the dialogue as standing around in the open world while each NPC talks which can be quite annoying later on.

You'll be happy with the rest of the story in that case. The first bit of Icebrood Saga in particular is excellent for Charr politics and more importantly the zone it's in has a concert event played by a Charr metal band.

Since you have excellent taste and are a Charr enthusiast I should also mention that both Charr voice actors were re-cast at certain points of the story due to scheduling and availability issues. I think the Male Charr VA changes at the start of Living World Season 3 and the Female Charr VA changes in the last episode of Living World Season 4. Even before that I think they also messed around with the voice filters on the female Charr VA in Heart of Thorns so you might find it a bit jarring going into that when your character's voice is suddenly an octave lower.

I had a similar feeling while going through it with my friends. "Why the gently caress are these clowns here? Aren't they most famous for not killing a dragon and getting tons of people killed?" I think the intent was that they didn't want every player character to be the chosen one like how FFXIV has the player character be a unique special being within the universe, which makes it weird when there's thousands of you. But in the end it makes the narrative kind of weird because you're just escorting the real main characters around.

Meowywitch posted:

They should make a new one. Not to like, replace the story fight; but just as a cool boss people can do. It's really funny seeing that image of dragon size comparisons on the wiki and Zhaitan is like, a fourth the size of the other elder dragons too.

I'm genuinely happy to escort the real main characters again (Tybalt, Trehearne) but they have to be actually good characters who I'm rooting for. Watching Trehearne finish his Wyld Hunt was really sweet. :unsmith:

That said, treating us as the escorts for the real main characters while simultaneously acting like we single-handedly killed the dragon is REAL weird

Yeah for a while, you HAD to have a party to do it.

And your party fell into 1 of 2 groups.

1) no one had done it before and you were excited.

2) Your party members had done it before and it was a "gently caress, im only doing this because i like you, let me see if i can rope 1-2 more people in so we can waste an hour"

As time moved forward there was far less 1 and a lot more 2.

I think i can remember 2 manning it after the change with someone that had done it before (i think we were both doing alts, but i cant recall ever doing it again on another character) and it was just slow and boring for the both of us.

But it used to take an hour at least.

Anyone remember about how long it takes to get through Living World Season 1 & 2?

I just bought the HoT/PoF bundle and am itching to get all the goodies but didn’t have any clue what was going on when I saw the first cinematic in Silverwastes. I’m not obsessed with experiencing all the story but it’d be nice to have some context other than a recap.

According to my records it took me seven sessions over a couple weeks to get through Season 1 and nine sessions to get through Season 2 the first time. My second time through S2 took six sessions. That's with me attempting all story achievements and Return To achievements, probably takes less time if you're just playing it for story. (A session for me is usually 2-4 hours but includes doing other stuff.)

HoT/PoF bundle is awesome, I hope you have a blast. There's so much good stuff in there, I can't say much more without spoilers, but you're in for a treat. Did you join the [GOON] guild on NA yet? We'd love to have you and could help with HoT, there's some content in there which is intended for groups/parties and quite difficult to solo (by design).

I got antsy and read some of the Wiki and a summary on LW S1 so I know a lot of what happens there already. Felt like getting to HoT, but turned around and am doing the Living World stuff for now. Maybe I’ll change my mind again at some point.

Yeah I got the invites to GOON and SFD, thanks. In as Direbadger(.5389) the Necro for now until I get alt-itis. Warlock was my main in WoW and it seemed like somewhat of an equivalent. Might get into Ranger next so I can have a pet and try healing. I liked healing as Druid and Priest in WoW but it looks like it could be quite different here.

I’ve soloed a few of the dungeons and battled Teq a couple times. Definitely want to get in on some of the other endgame PvE when I get more comfortable and try out the elite specs. Hoping it’s not too dependent on split second reactions to mechanics.

GW2's and Arenanet's greatest flaw is that on release they really didn't have a good vision on where to take the game next and they fumbled on a lot of ideas that either failed or got half-baked and abandoned before moving onto the next thing, leaving behind a lot of stuff like Zhaitan that was barely tolerable at best but with a clear vision at release could of been (and still could be) designed to be a 10 minute 10 person strike with a 1 person storymode version.

I'd say heart of thorns is where the game hit it's peak challenging content (to a lot of complaints from people who don't want that) and path of fire and S4 is where the gameplay, movement, visual design and cinematics hit it's peak even if it stumbled in places.

Lest we forget.

Okay but in all fairness to them that was at the very beginning of mmo "eSports". It was absolutely a stupid rear end decision, but personally I'm a bit more forgiving vs games that come out in the 2020s with 'esports' as the focus.

I do think it's funny that GW2 has followed the original's trajectory in that respect. Both launched with an intended focus of PvP as the endgame with PvE there in good part as tutorial for players to learn the game mechanics. And both ended up neglecting PvP in favor of more popular PvE content.
