Yes he had quite the David Byrne look going there.

But it did convince me to see if I have either of the equalizer movies available on streaming platforms, and I have both. Those any good?

Very very good, all three. They're more slow paced and like moody drama character studies, with bursts of action, but I really like what they're doing.

Yeah, it worked for me. It is much more deliberate than the Denzel one, less intense, but I enjoyed it. It doesn't generally have a great reputation, I think.

That's cool to hear. I think in this thread especially, buried treasure is where it's at. Tough to go by ratings for a lot of the fine genre and action stuff we peep in here.

Man on Fire and Lionheart (Van Damme - worth a watch) both have a 3.0/5 on letterboxd, I can't get much from the numbers.

Cooked Auto

I remember watching Lionheart a while back during a minor JCVD binge and thinking it just wanted to be Bloodsport. I'd say 3/5 is a good score for it, very middle of the line movie that lacks something silly like him playing twins.

Hell yeah. I have it at 8/10 myself. At least imdb gave it a 6.2, that .2 goes a long way. For the record I like it a lot better than Double Impact, gave that a 5/10, but I do like the idea of playing twins. Now Sudden Death, that's my jam. Bloodsport is a masterpiece for sure.

Michael Dudikoff rules by the way. I recommend Avenging Force, also American Ninja naturally.

American Ninja is a core memory for me, that’s the one where he rescues a girl in a jungle and then he’s an army guy and then at the end he assaults a mansion full of ninjas and uses a bow, right? That movie owns

Been a while since I saw Lionheart, but something I remember about the choreography in both movies is that there's very little defense. People duck punches, but there's not much of the blocking and trapping that would become so popular in the 00s, at least not in any fight with JCVD. It's all about how much you can take and how much you can dish out.

I can report that Drive is extremely good. The action is legit, plus the story and overall aesthetic has a lot of creative flair to it. It's a pretty unique mix, and probably the best case out there to argue that Dacascos deserved a much much better career.

I finally caught Jawan, fantastic fun. L Between this, Pathaan, and his Tiger 3 cameo, I've realized I've completely missed out on Shah Rukh Khan. Anyone have recommendations on his other great stuff? He is such a a god damned star.

It's weird because I knew both him and Salman by name only and Salman does nothing for me.

Good question. I loved Pathaan, gonna see that one too, any other good modern setting fun over-the-top Indian action movies? Do you vouch for the Tiger movies by the way?

(Like set in the 1970s or later, made in the 2000s or later, I did see Alluda Majaka though it was pretty crazy)

I remember seeing some trailers for several ones that had Fast & Furious vibes with the outrageous coool stuff and whatnot, blanking on the names of some. The Dhoom series was one, wondered if those were gems that might be crazy fun etc.

I didn't much care for the 3 tiger movies. The first two are very much products of their time - Ek Tha is very casino Royale style with tons of parkour, and Zinda Hai is just generic fighting ISIS which I get plenty of.

The only thing is that there is an absolutely, completely insane, could never happen in America payoff to a minor character from Zinda Hai when he shows back up in Tiger 3.

But really the star of all 3 is Katrina Kaif despite getting far less screentime than Salman.

If I had to rank all the indian action i saw in the last year or two it would be the following tiers
RRR, Bahubali 1&2
War, Pathaan, Jawan, Pushpa
KGF 1&2, tiger 1-3

There's a very fine line with nonstop hero shots and speed ramping. For my taste I either need an actor I love and can disregard how easy he does things(SRK) or some sort of reason the hero isn't completely unstoppable (both RRR and bahubalis solve this in very different ways)

Dhoom is the series I want to watch next.

I mentioned the 1970s setting and on since it is a different vibe in an action movie with a more modern setting, different kind of fun and cheese. So War you like better than Pathaan? I'll have to peep that.

Is it a controversal thing to say that Tony Scott made better movies (For Me), than Ridley ever did - though he did put out some loving bangers like Russel Crowe in Wine Country movie.

meanwhile Tony Scott basically just putting out banger after banger after banger. Top Gun all the way up to Taking of Pelham which I'm about to watch right now after seeing the poster art*

No one will ever convince me Spy Game isn't incredible (but i haven't seen it for like 10 years)....

Tony is definitely trendy these days and I like him as a stylist just fine but he just doesn’t have a very fine touch on the non-action stuff. He directed Eddie Murphy in his prime and multiple Tarantino /Shane Black scripts and those movies still feel like they’re marking time between set pieces

Very cool! I'm not gonna rate them head to head in quality, but I notice on Letterboxd Tony is winning for me in quantity! I've seen 10 Ridley, 11 Tony. How about that. True Romance is one of my top fav movies. I'm fond of Blade Runner for sure. Cool dudes.

Should I see Days of Thunder and Domino?

They are both very interesting directors, both very visual people.

Ridley’s had his share of bombs as well, more than a few, but he also directed Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and BHD. So he’s simply got to be in my personal favorite list, just for those four.

BUT… Tony had Top Gun, but then also The Last Boy Scout/True Romance/Crimson Tide in quick succession.

Tony all the way, big time.

I think Man on Fire might be my favorite of his but it's tough to narrow it down. The Hunger is way up there too. For someone with so many directorial tics, he really had range.

I feel like Ridley's highs were higher but also his lows were lower, I look at Tony's filmography and there's no real stinkers there other than maybe Revenge(which I haven't seen)?

Of course, part of that is just that Tony only directed half the number of films as Ridley has. You get up around 30 films and the odds are in favor of having a few missteps here and there.

Days of Thunder is a comfort movie for me. It does that thing where the film starts out with two people disliking each other then they become friends. It's a film about racing where the racing isn't the most important aspect of it. Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall have insanely good chemistry and their characters' relationship is central to the whole movie.

And then I learned the show you're actually talking about is not available on Netflix in Canada.

Polite Society is an odd inclusion unless he's just trying to comment on every action film made this year. I would not call the action scenes in that compelling or well shot.

I will say he's a rare voice that shared my thoughts on the JW4 (mostly uninspired except for a few scenes) so that's a good sign

I think JW4 had some of the best sequences for an action movie last year, along with Extraction 2's train sequence. The Donnie Yen scenes were all brilliant, his agility and coordination was insane while still making you believe he is blind. The stair sequence at the end was good albeit a bit too long. But I generally agree with your take.

I am a very very big believer that longer runtime is not a positive for action movies. If you don't have a strong plot, you have to basically keep the tension up the whole movie with nonstop sequences and the sustained high intensity can sometimes just make you numb to the action. JW movies have kept getting longer and I don't see that as a positive. While the plot has also gotten worse and more convuled. I think the simplicity of the first one was the best. Legendary hitman returns to exact revenge on mobster who killed his puppy.

Like I said this is only for action movies which are just one big sequence like JW is turning into with less and less story. This is why I rate Raid Redemption and something like Dredd highly. They are both around 1h30-1h40, it's just one giant sequence without any location change but they are paced so well.
