The government would never allow another referendum now. It was fine when they were riding high, but there's a real chance of them losing - everybody in government talked about Brexit for months, and then they were traumatized again by Trump winning. The French aren't bombing mail boxes or even protesting, so there's no reason to offer it to them either.

the PQ is resurgent right now mostly because Legault and the Coalition Avenir Quebec is very unpopular, and all the voters who flocked from the PQ to the CAQ a few years ago are now considering going back. it's nothing to do imo with a meaningful uptick in interest in separation. The PQ themselves recognize that a sovereignty referendum right now is not viable and pushing for it would just cost them potential PLQ voters who might otherwise come over in hopes of booting out Legault.

if you see English media talking up this stuff, it's just because the QC vs. rest of Canada narrative is a reliable way for them to attract eyeballs, has been for literal centuries

I feel like it is far more likely this is the result of young people that desperately want to do something, anything about a problem that will affect them far more than anyone else. I worked in museums, what they are doing is disruptive, but not actually damaging.

The lawsuits brought about young people are good in the sense that they at least jam the issue through our institutions and when they refuse to recognize the problem or do anything to compel governments to do anything, it crystalizes for everyone exactly what's going to happen if you rely on currently existing politics.

Speaking of YTV actors, I'm wondering if I'm remembering this properly about the guy who did Uh-Oh -- he was on this show

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGoymLRaPPA

and he did his game show host character which was originally named Bob human being.

Is that real or did I make that up when I was 14 and now my brain has decided it's a real memory?

that's a banger of an article. Susan Clairmont did her homework.

quote:

“When I lay awake at night time / And think about my day / I cry myself asleep / These problems never go away / No one will ever listen or understand / The only thing I’ve got in my life is me and my band,” he shouted over and over in a banger called "My Life."

quote:

A Hamilton Spectator reviewer described Trunk’s sound as “beaned-up polkas,” which became the name of their 1996 album.

“This is a group that prides itself in being resolutely negative,” the review said. “A quick scan of the subject matter shows them to be against high-morale, straight-edge people, hippies, jocks, and school.”

quote:

His three biggest creditors, known collectively as “The Applicants” in hundreds of pages of court documents, are former clients who won a $40-million claim against him.

The pitch Grozelle initially made to them (and dozens of others, as it turns out) was simple: if they gave him large amounts of cash for short periods ranging from a few weeks to a few months, he promised to lend it out to third parties, then pay it back fast with a high rate of return.

quote:

The next applicant is Crystal Masterson, a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario since 2013. She is the founder and award-winning principal of Masterson Law, a boutique firm in Burlington. She specializes in real estate law and wills and estates.

Her profile on her firm’s website is a far cry from the normal bland lawyer bio: “Although Crys’s legal name is Crystal, she goes by Crys professionally, as she understands it’s difficult for clients to trust a lawyer with a stripper name (thanks, mom and dad). Crys enjoys spending time with her spouse and three young children, attending any concert that comes to town, watching all variations of the Bachelor franchise, cheering for the Raptors (even when they’re losing), making the world’s best margaritas, and refusing to wear pants without an elastic waist (because self-care).”

the third segment in this where a purple haired 70 year old senior stays in her single family home while some dude in his 30s moves into a retirement home was like catnip for me to rage about

https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-379-cost-of-living/clip/16041632-the-nuclear-option

some highlights:
- she says she doesn't have to leave her detached single family home because she has the support of her children and neighbours
- her neighbours mow her lawn and shovel her snow
- spends most of her time in just three rooms
- doesn't want to hang out with other seniors, wants to be around families with kids (this one especially made me choke considering how many people are delaying or not having kids for lack of housing)
- her son wants her to sell and let a nice family have the house but she says she "doesn't want to be in a box"

and i think about how i'm facing eviction, again, from a tiny condo apartment, and how i'll be moving into an even smaller apartment next and my rent will be going up yet another 20-30% and i honestly am trying not to punch the loving wall
