I honestly feel worse for Dr. Qumyn, who had way more in the way of a biological family and they still didn't really seem to give a gently caress about her. Her mother in particular.

Well, to be fair for Mama Quymn, we see her for, like, 10 seconds. Yeah, she just passes her kid off to Kano in a visibly disinterested way, but... well, are you a parent? Because I am. And when you go somewhere and you have to drag your kid along, but where you're going has someone there to watch your kid because you're there to do grown-up stuff (be it a sportsball viewing festival or a key party), it's absolutely normal to pass the kid off to the caretakers as soon as you can. I've seen it a zillion times, I've done it a few (not many, because my kid was autistic, and taking him to many of those places was a whole thing), and I know for a fact it was done to me.

Now, that said, when the rest of that episode plays out, you can see that the little bit of Mama Quymn's interaction with her daughter that we saw was probably the way they interacted most of the time. Or, maybe not? I mean, maybe every other moment she spent with her daughter was as a doting, loving, and attentive mother who went to that key party one time because her man was way more into dudes than he was into her, and what she wanted was a man to be into her, and Jonas Venture was the mannest thing any of them knew.

So let's say she was a terrific mother for the sake of argument. She was a terrific superhero-type mother, judging by her outfit and the company she keeps. Her kid was no doubt all caught up in her superhero (or superspy or superwhatever) activities like Rusty was in his dad's, so she turned out... well, better than Rusty, but not too different.

A key part of this is, remember, Rusty has a pretty terminally skewed sense of what the 'real' world is like, and despite his attempts at being a cynical, pragmatic opportunist, he ultimately is stuck thinking in Boy Adventurer logic, and the dead dreams of the Jet Age. Like you said, he sees Dean as basically a do-over of his own life, and encourages him, but doesn't understand why Dean acts and thinks that way, that he's actively trying to escape the boy adventurer bullshit and give normalcy a shot. And Hank is the rebellious one who talks out of turn and doesn't follow the script Rusty has in mind- but Rusty doesn't realise that's him actually being adventurous, wanting to participate and contribute rather than being dragged along.

Yes absolutely thank you, the bolded part in particular is something I was circling couldn't figure out a good way to phrase, but this is exactly it. Assuming the perception Doc has during his "kidnapping" is the same by the end of the series, it is even more clear by then that Dean does not want to be part of the boy adventurer -> super scientist pipeline and just wants a normal life, while Hank absolutely wants to be an adventurer (but just doesn't actually care about or have aptitude for the super science part) so Doc has it effectively inverted.

Point taken, but the way she (Tara) responded, it really felt like it was a more-than-normal-occurrence kind of thing.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Given what we see of other boy (and girl) adventurers, I wouldn't be surprised if Jonas wasn't particularly standout as treatment of kids and sidekicks goes, especially given the whole deal of the group therapy session where compared to his peers, Rusty made it out pretty good. Johnny in particular comes off as almost the previous generation's Bad End Hank, given he and Rusty seem to have a similar physical vs intellectual focus, but with way less of the supervision that Hank and Dean get at home because Rusty is actually trying to be a parent sometimes.

Might just be the sheer amount of resources Rusty inherited rather than being cast aside meant that he has some measure of stability despite everything, as well as actually having been given some attempt at education rather than spending his life entirely as a living gimmick, even if he's still more or less as traumatised and unemployable as the rest of them.

You know thinking on it Rusty is a pretty big argument against "Confidence is sexy. If you don't have it, fake it til' you make it." He always comes off as the smarmiest creep when he has his confidence mask on, but becomes much better at communicating/getting along with people once it slips off and he can just be real with people.

Yeah, one of the best scenes is with him and Sheila just chatting outside their roles once he realizes he's not going to get anywhere with her.

Yeah the scene on the roof and realizing he never just tried to call the boys is such a perfect way to tie a bow on that whole amazing episode.

Who do we actually see Rusty hitting on?

1. Sheila, a woman who's already in a committed and loyal relationship
2. Molotov, a woman who is way out of his league and personifies the idea of a professional
3. One of the prostitutes at operation prom, where his smooth talk seems to be working until he suddenly offers to give her a Rusty Venture

In the first two he's literally doing something gross (hitting on someone in a relationship, hitting on the nanny) and for the third he does fine until he brings up a depraved sex act.

In the opening of Season 2 we see he's in a relationship with an attractive person much younger than him, but we don't see how they met. He's probably a lot more capable of talking to women at parties but he never goes to those because he needs to invent the oo-ray or whatever

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Rusty's entire monologue about how he is a man, and deserves to be touched, and not to feel like the pathetic man he is is such an incredible speech that hit way too close to home.

Yeah, Rusty's entire idea of sexuality and women is also pretty seriously hosed up by his role models. Primarily Jonas Venture Sr being handsome, buff, rich and shameless. And also regularly emasculating and sexually humiliating Rusty for cheap laughs.

Also don't forget the time when he was dating an obvious serial killer because he just sees 'That means she's got to gently caress me at least once before she tries to kill me!'

She wasn't a serial killer, though.

Also:

Dr. Venture: Mine was worse. My prom date was to have been Miss Linda Lovelace.
Billy Quizboy: Deep Throat Linda Lovelace?
Dr. Venture: The same. She, of course, by that time was a vocal anti-pornography advocate—thanks, Dad—and sent her friend Andrea Dworkin as her proxy.
Billy Quizboy: Was she hot?
Dr. Venture: Google "Andrea Dworkin" on an empty stomach one day. [Into phone] Oh, hello? Yes, I'd like six of your finest whores please. Fine, escorts. Yes, I think I'll go for full service. Sure, I'll hold. [To Billy] Anyway, because my dad brought, like, ten Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders as his date, he didn't care that my date was a huge, angry, "way smarter than a 16-year-old me" woman who called me "little half man."
Billy Quizboy: Better than having your mom as your date.
Dr. Venture: It got worse, no poo poo. I ended up slow-dancing with H.E.L.P.eR. H.E.L.P.eR.

Like goddamn, if Rusty's childhood was surreal and miserable, his adolescence sounds like a living nightmare, and as a goon I'm probably not saying that lightly.

Say what you want about Dermott, but he's definitely been a positive influence on the boys, just as being someone semi-normal in their peer group. He's a lovely loser dirtbag and probably washed out of the OSI, but he's a good friend, and probably one of the few people who can maintain a relatively healthy balance between normalcy and adventure weirdness, in a white trash way.

She was a black widow, allegedly. Rusty went on the date knowingly because he assumed she'd at least bed him before she killed him.
Really a lot of that was on Brock by body guarding a little too hard. Black widows don't kill before they're in the will.
But then he cyberstalked her after the fact.

I think Brock and Doc did research before the date so I don't think it was rumors. But I watched all this like 5(?) years ago now.

Also: So many VB clips can be recontextualized now that we have the whole picture. Like how it makes complete sense for the horde of zombie Deans and Hanks in Rusty's mind to mistake the monarch for their dad.
