Probably not until the game starts having problems with running on then-currrent systems at all. If the base game still runs fine, what's the motivation for doing a port to an entire new engine?

Wild new development for Mod Organizer 2, there's now a plugin called Bethesda Plugin Manager for Mod Organizer that displays record and archive conflicts in the plugin load order on the right pane (esps, esms), as well as allowing you to sort plugins into groups!

a reminder for everyone, creating a new profile on mo2 is not the same as creating a new instance, and as such, creating a new profile will not reset your modlist. consequently, do not reset your modlist after creating a new profile.

Before you do anything else, it might be a good idea to simply start up the game and use the console command "getskseversion". If you get an actual result, you'll at the very least know that the script extender is working properly. If it doesn't, it'd explain why none of the alternate start mods are running.

e: Also, make sure to check that MO2 is actually using the right file path for the game folder (settings -> path -> Managed Game), that you're launching the game via MO2, and that you're launching with the right executable (skse64_loader.exe). Chances are you've checked this already, but it's worth making sure.

To expand on the above questions, I know I had zero luck with pretty much anything until I got rootbuilder working properly and installed skse (and sse engine fixes part 2, later on) through it, as opposed to doing anything with my base Skyrim folder as skse directs you to

I dunno, I was just curious. I played through Morrowind for the first time a year or so ago with OpenMW, and just yesterday I tried DFU, the latter which is leaps-and-bounds a more comfortable way to play Daggerfall, and the former having a bunch of fixes and various tweaks for Morrowind.

However, I don't know what goes into making something like DF Unity or OpenMW, so I figure something for Skyrim would take far, far longer. I just thought maybe if such a thing came about, it'd make modding easier or allow for more possibilities with what people could do.

That reminds me: what's the deal now with Skyrim SE/AE? I heard there was a new update that added a bunch of new paid mods, but that it also broke a lot of mods in the process.

When I did my modded install of Skyrim (SE, I don't own Anniversary Edition), I downpatched it 1.5.97, but if I were to do a new install, would I want to use the most recent patch? I heard that the most recent update doubled the ESL file size.

What is the advantage you guys see, using NMM or anything else to mod Skrim SE?

I’m not being flippant, I just don’t understand. I probably have 30-35 mods running in SE, and for each one I downloaded manually from Nexus, and put the .zip contents into the Skyrim data folder or the data/meshes or textures folders myself. It doesn’t take long to do, and the few times I’ve screwed my game up I just removed the mod that caused the issue from the load order.

Are the mod managers for SE easier somehow?

LMAO, I just wanted to quote myself here, from back when I was so naive

There are mods to just disable player follower collisions which seems simple enough solution. I’m running one with VR specific stuff because there’s a crash bug right now between player follower collisions and a popular VR mod but there are others.

Until last year I’d never used followers in my previous hundreds of hours, but sometimes it’s a fun change of pace to have someone around to comment on poo poo even if the writing is sometimes awkward.

You think you can defeat ME, Ephraimcopter?!?

You couldn't even beat Assassincopter!!!
Had a decent time in the end playing around with this modpack, and in general I like a lot of it, but I really wish I could just pick out and delete like three or four mods without the entire thing imploding violently. Particularly the combat overhaul that makes literally everything stagger you 85% of the time and knock you down 10% of the remainder if you're stupid enough to play a mage. Unfortunately everything is merged and dependencies and blah blah blah so I can't cut it. I could do a fresh profile that mostly just reinstalls the mods I want directly if I feel like sinking the time into it, but I'm sure there will still be a bunch of broken garbage even if I try. :(

e: hmm, on a little digging in the MCM I can actually disable a couple of the mods, but not all of them :/

That sounds almost certainly like something you can adjust or disable without removing the mod. If there isn’t a mcm option for it in Valhalla or whatever combat mod then at least in the ini files. If your mod pack has a discord you can probably just search there and find someone discussing these settings

The combat mod is one of the ones that actually does have a MCM option to disable it (wish I'd poked around in there a while ago! :v:) but there are a couple that I don't see a way to. I could probably join their discord and see if people there can help me, but a) I dunno how friendly a modpack's discord is to people coming in saying "hey I don't like this" and b) that sounds like way more effort than I'm feeling like putting in, at least at the moment. I'm probably being stupid, though!

different communities will handle it in different ways but the modpack discords i've been in generally have a specifically separate channel for modding the modpack that's very clearly marked as "HERE BE DRAGONS NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU SUPPORT IF YOU gently caress UP YOUR GAME" and frankly asking if a couple mods you don't like can be disabled is much easier to that kind of channel than the people who are inevitably trying to jam in Schlongs of Skyrim and complaining nothing is working but they won't tell you they've actually added porn mods

FuzzySlippers
Feb 6, 2009

I’ve joined a lot of mod list discords and they are usually chill for discussion and modification if you come to it chill. It is important to note any changes you made to the list already since people asking for support on modified lists is usually a sore spot.

Tone matters a lot and a discord post with the same tone as your original post would probably be received poorly from people just making something for fun (not flaming you over it SA tends to be overly acerbic). If you are finding things tough as a mage I’d expect someone else had the same problems and may have list tweak suggestions beyond just disabling things.

I’ve had a lot of fun before with pure mage characters on actiony lists but it usually requires some play style changes to trigger parries and blocks with magic if you like a more active wizard style. Modded Skyrim actually does the gameplay of kung fu wizards better than any other game I’ve played.

That's really useful. The comments in that post link to https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/19esxy9/a_comprehensive_guide_to_downgrading_skyrim/ which seems a little simpler in practice.

The problem with Downgrade Patcher is that it works with version 1.6.1130.0 but Skyrim is now at 1.6.1170. This second guide gets you from 1170 to 1130 and then you can just use the Downgrade Patcher for the remaining steps.

E: CDPR made this simple for people who want to use the old version of Witcher 3, pre Ray Tracing. They have a Steam Beta version which is the old version before all the updates. So you want to use all the mods? Click one drop down in Steam properties and you're done, Steam will itself do the downgrade so to speak. Convenient and thoughtful.

But alas, Bethesda is trying to milk money from all their old players. Unlike CDPR they're not simply adding free updates to keep an old classic updated to modern tech, just adding silly stuff to keep extracting money from their golden goose. Beth's goal is to get as much of their old user base onto their new updates - maximum inconvenience in the hope some of them will buy some paid mod. lovely, lovely company.
