I counsel all of my family members and all of my users at work to voice verify if things seem the least bit out of the ordinary. Someone from “accounting” emails you and says they need you to update your direct deposit? Look them up on the employee directory and give them a call, or walk over there and ask them what’s up. You got a call from your bank or the state revenue department? 1. No you didn’t and 2. look them up and call somebody. Anyone who is in a position to actually deal with any of that poo poo at any of those institutions is going to be very grateful that you did.

My mom and dad are very capable and cognitively 100% as they near 70, yet a couple years ago they got a call from the [county] sheriffs department telling them there was a warrant for her but they’d clear it if they gave him 300$ in gift cards immediately. When she asked for a badge number he started screaming that he was going to put her in jail so she hung up and called me crying and wondering if she was going to jail. Like, no, and they’d just come arrest you. Also you’re a 68yo middle class white woman who’s never broken the loving law, take a breather. But they’re really good at getting people nervous and desperate.

For me it was the “you have multiple warrants out, also absolutely do not contact a lawyer about it”. Which yes, does sound like something law enforcement might tell someone, but it doesn’t mean you have to listen!

There used to be ones a long time ago that were "Pay us or we leak what porn you saw", but I wonder if those got less effective over time as people would care less about that.

I’ve gotten multiple scam calls from just a regular number where someone knew my name and told me they were from Wells Fargo consumer protection. The first time they did it I answered without looking at the phone and let them forward me to someone else. It clearly sounded like one guy was handing the phone to another guy and I can’t remember what their pitch was but it unraveled quickly. Something about me giving them all my information so they could confirm it. I called the actual WF fraud number and they sent me a new card. But then I got the same call and scam again so who knows. It’s more sophisticated than I would have thought.

They’re just farming for the rest.

I got one of those a year or so ago on my work email. I’m extremely careful about what I do on my work computer and won’t even go to websites not related to work, so it was laughable when I read it. I just forwarded it to our fraud compliance department (yes we have one my company is globally massive) and forgot about it. I think anymore those type of scams have changed into them pretending to be women and preying on lonely men. With how common nudes are to be sent, it’s easy for them to get a guy to send a dick pic or whatever and then immediately turn it around to “pay us or we’ll put this online, send it to friends and family and tell everyone you’re a pedo” And then you have to spend a couple weeks convincing your uncle who’s already sent them several thousand that it’s a scam and to not send them more money. And also hey maybe go hang out with friends and family and not be alone for a while.

When I was a wee lad of 20 something I got a scam call from someone claiming to be the IRS saying I owed like $1k, thankfully I called the real IRS and they said that anything from them would come through the mail and they would never call Wish I could say it was purely out of savvy but it was more that $1k would have broken me at the time so I was desperately hoping it was a scam lol Intruder fucked around with this message at 16:53 on Feb 16, 2024 |

By the way for those of you fixing your bad credit decisions in the past like I still am, I've had a lot of luck with Experian Boost. I wish Equifax and Transunion did it too. My Experian score rose like 30 points in two months. And since everyone wants to use tri-merge credit scores now for horseshit reasons like to see if you can rent an apartment which is in NO WAY what credit scores are meant for since you aren't borrowing money it's more important than ever to get those scores up. You just know one day these fucks are going to try and use your credit score to determine if you can get insurance. gently caress this country. kiimo fucked around with this message at 20:39 on Feb 16, 2024 |

When buying a house and going through that credit check stuff, I learned my mom had me as an authorized user for one of her cards that she apparently forgot about so everything she used that card for was unpaid for a long time, so my credit score was like 550. I did not use credit much, so that was a significant part of my history. Now I use credit a lot more and I got that past due charge expunged so I am at like 820.
