What. A. Movie. I am not a film fanatic at all, but this film blew away my expectations. The foreshadowing is brilliant throughout the movie. Red when talking about Andy's hope of getting out of prison saying "Hope is a lovely pipe dream" only for the ending to be him escaping literally through a lovely pipe is amazing. Also I love how Wardon Norton's safe behind the photo relates to Andy's hole behind the poster. (both secrets hidden behind an object on a wall) are great parallels. Also to me when Brooks is finally released on parole I gather the impression that his view of the outside world is his "prison" and prison was his form of comfort and safety like the outside world is to us. And of course the arc Red goes through in terms of hope. At the beginning he says hope is what kills us and by the end he truely finds the meaning of hope with his end speech "I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope." Its truely beautiful and well done. Favorite scenes: -Rooftop beer scene - seeing the smile on Andy's face as he watches his co-workers / inmates enjoy a cold one in the heat knowing he made them happy and it gave him a sense of normality. -Red's parole approved speech. -Boggs being beat up. -Beach ending scene -Andy when he gets through the end of the pipe embracing the rain Have you guys seen this movie? What are your thoughts?

I thought the movie's ending should have been a little more ambiguous. The way the novella ends, Red finds the hidden package and is on his way to the Mexican border, thinking those final lines on the bus. We're never 100% sure if he finds Andy or not. The ambiguity encourages the reader to be as hopeful as Red is. In the movie we get a warm and fuzzy Corona ad that confirms everything worked out fine.

Probably one of the only movies that was pretty much as good as the book. Probably because the book was a short story. Stand By Me also comes to mind.
