In retrospect, the Tsalal station bros were remarkably cool about their murder partner slowly breaking down about killing his girlfriend and vanishing for long stretches of time to build an evidence dump.

They essentially accelerated it by isolating him and letting him cry in his room all the time, which unfortunately feels fairly true to life. There's no way they wouldn't have resented him for bringing an activist onto the base in the first place.

Is it kind of weird that was published minutes after the episode aired? Or did he write it based on an advanced copy? I don't really know how Tv "reviews" normally work. Don't they normally only get the first few episodes?

Depends on the show, usually ahead of broadcast reviewers will get 2-4 episodes in advance. They probably let them watch them a day or two ahead to get articles out immediately.

Pulling off "this character is doing lovely things and making risky decisions, but we still root for them" is difficult and the writers in this one didn't have anywhere near the skill enough to do it. It requires at minimum some investment in the character's wellbeing and justification for why the lovely thing they're doing is the best course of action or a reasonable one at least.

Rust going back in with the meth motorcycle guys and the shitshow that follows is an example of doing this incredibly well. It's risky, it puts Marty in danger, it makes sense, and it pays off both in plot - they get their lead - and mechanics, by culminating in one of the best scenes in the show at the stash house.

Danvers and Navarro going complete rogue and turning to extreme violence as the default makes no sense beyond "they are lovely people and it'll be great to see the bad man tortured." The payoff is bad man explaining exactly how the crime was committed (I suppose it's supposed to matter that he lies about not participating) and then a thrown-in confession to lazily wrap up the mine plot. It sucks rear end!!

VagueRant

Didn't Rust throw a metal toolbox at a guy's head and beat info out of him just to get a lead in, like, the second episode?

All of the True Detectives have been Cops.

Toaster Beef
Jan 23, 2007

that's not nature's way
Rust and Marty doing awful poo poo in their capacities as police gets excused by the implicit morality of the show because they're actively doing detective work and chasing down leads and getting closer to resolving the case. It's not okay that Rust absolutely hosed that dude up with a toolbox, but it led to the hillbilly bunny ranch, so we whistle past it. It's their transgressions as people that come back to haunt them (Rust's increased isolation and declining health and desire to kill himself, the dissolution of Marty's family).

In Night Country, we don't ... really see a whole lot of detective work, so there's very little to whistle past in the name of "well they're working a case." But the same sorts of personal transgressions are present, so it's like, okay well we cheered for the lovely people in season one because they were legitimately great detectives, but the lovely people in season four don't seem to be great detectives at all, so what are we meant to do?

I think it's better than 2 but that's about it. It has a meandering quality but less so. 2 has some incredible scenes but you have to sit through a lot of bullshit, this one has a more consistent quality to it but man, whoever scored this thing sucks.

I do get the sense that they were making it up as they went along, and there would've been a way better way to tie this thing up if they actually planned the previous episodes with their conclusion in mind.

My theory is that there were some elements of production (HBO side?) that intentionally aided in tanking this season. There had to be some purposefulness behind how bad it was. Maybe to finally retire the True Detective brand. Maybe it had so much status it would always have to be made whilst not deliver views.

I don't know. We got s1 and the sountrack to s2 out of it so meh. thank you td for introducing me to lera lynn and black mountain.

Why did they even have a secret hatch to their ice drilling room, when they were openly telling people "yeah we're here to drill for ice cores and study them"?

Like even the high school teacher knew they were after some special ice bacteria. A secret hatch and ladder just seems like a huge waste of time. They were storing samples out in the open upstairs, which means they had to go through all the bullshit and carrying them up the secret hatch.

Close. I don't recall the Tweets 100% but I think it'd be a tad more like

"We were brainstorming how the night should look in the Alaskan winter and somebody laughed and suggested that we ask a 14 year old. Which would be ironic because kids don't learn about these things anymore since they have phones. So we took the thought further and figured the teenager would delegate this to ChatGPT which had just come out and was making a lot of mistakes in the early renditions.

It's kind of both a dig at modern youth culture and overreliance on technology at the same time."

Human being for president.
That was maybe the most contrivance-packed hour of television I have ever seen.

At the end I have the impression that the supernatural elements of the show are absolutely real. The most obvious part is the ghosts directing characters to new locations or new information. Those (evil, evil!!!) scientists still didn’t die of the cold, but from whatever malevolent spirit lurked in the area and was called up by their digging and hilariously spontaneous group murder. Hence the bizarre wounds matching Otis’s and all the “she’s awake” bits. And don’t forget the little Exorcist ripoff in the hospital with the survivor.

The tongue (perfectly preserved for how many years?) would tie into the idea of a Tupilaq https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupilaq . I would give the writers credit for this but I’m assuming they simply watched The Terror.

Amazing yes it was right there. I feel like the TD brand is interesting in that everybody seems to think they know exactly the five or six tropes that make something a TD season. They need to have some nerd conference in some major European capital where they come up what makes something TD. Then we can start calling everything TDlikes.

Did I miss something? Who kept Annie's tongue and then dropped it off at the station?

As she was a vocal protestor the tongue might have relevance there but I think the point is to find a body with its tongue cut somewhere the public will learn of it. But I'm not going to fault anyone for this as it seems unlikely this was the intention.

How much did they have to be paying these nerds to do this for at least a decade with no end in sight? Some of them weren't exactly 20 year olds who planned to do it for a while then retire to an island at 45.

Was Silver Sky supplying them with sex workers, drugs, gaming PCs and rare skins on Fortnite, illicit pornography, and crypto to keep morale up?

Well that was a dud. Not as big of a dud as S2 but then I was expecting a lot more from S2.

The fact that this got the True Detective label was something of a deterrent for me initially because I would've happily taken just a "Jodie Foster is a jaded cop in Alaska" show instead of spooooky ghosts because this is True Detective. It's been a while but S3 had almost none of that in it, right? It was just Ali's character losing his mind and having flashbacks as I recall.

Some good performances but in service of very little. Also holy smokes the CGI animals were animated poorly, I knew I was in for a rough go when the first minute of the first episode made me laugh at the suicidal digi-caribou.

I still like the idea that nothing was actually supernatural because the implication would be that the researcher in the hospital just said some entirely delirious shite in a different voice before expiring and it just happened to be the one thing that would freak Navarro out.

Season 3 has some creepy cult red herrings. And the suggestion given by characters on the show that the case is connected with Marty's and Rustin's, so (to them) possibly supernatural by proxy but hints of that weren't seen in the case itself.

I would have loved for the two seasons that didn't take themselves seriously to have had a cross-over. To be fair, them being terrible cops has been consistent all season. They arrest and release people basically at random; assault fellow officers and civilians; murder suspects and coworkers and then cover it up, sleep with superior officers, and proceed with policework based on non-expert testimony that turns out to be 100% wrong!

Maybe that’s the joke, a show called True Detective ends with them covering up 15 different murders and suicide.

Edit:
It still makes me laugh that the murder conspirators come over to have a party AFTER midnight during the storm of the century. We know the storm is still bad because Rose is listening to the radio when the guy announces it’s New Year’s day.

Who the gently caress goes to a New Year’s party after midnight? Ever yone I’ve gone to has been over by like, 1230. It’s the one type of party that people don’t malinger.
