I picked this up hoping it would do for TR2 (which I loved, was the first game I played on the PS1) what the anniversary edition of TR1 did for the original.

It doesn't.

I could put up with the shonky graphics (oh, which are wayyy too dark unless you switch to the o.g. graphics, with no way I've found to adjust the gamma), but it seems that - if you're planning to use a controller - some of the standard moves don't work at all if you set it to the 'modern' control scheme. The action button, needed for ledge grabs, climbing out of water, flipping switches etc. just doesn't work at all, and you can't tap back to do the little hop backwards in order to drop down and hang off a ledge either, so it seems to be effectively unplayable unless you go mouse + keyboard or use the original tank controls. (This is with a PS5 controller and the recommended Steam control scheme. idk if you could finagle some working settings by reconfiguring the setup in Steam, and I certainly can't be arsed to try, so I just refunded it.)

It's now 95% out of 20 and after playing it for 90 minutes I'm thoroughly engrossed. It's Hollow Knight on psychadelics with a better map and a combat system that rewards variety like a DMC or Bulletstorm game. Every single room is worth just sitting in for a minute to look at all the gorgeous details of the back and foreground. It is a thoroughly weird game in the most positive way possible.

It is extremely weird, and the art is truly amazing, but I did think the combat wasn't great and it seemed to have a lot of essentially empty rooms. Plenty of set dressing but nothing to interact with. Just going by the demo though, maybe full release is different.

This is how I feel after about 3 hours. It looks amazing, the weird atmosphere is great. But the level design is basic and the combat pedestrian. There’s no platforming to speak of. The skill tree is lame.

FYI I was trying to figure out why this sort of looked like Goodbye Volcano High, and it is apparently by the people who made this

quote:

Snoot Game is a parody visual novel loosely based on Goodbye Volcano High, made by transphobic 4channers out of spite for the source material and its LGBT representation. Snoot Game promotes the idea that being nonbinary is a harmful self-delusion as a result of mental illness and toxic enablers, and early in the game, the protagonist claims that the use of the pronoun ‘they’ for Fang constitutes “murdering the English language.”

Notably, there are four possible endings to the game, where both of the “bad” outcomes are associated with Fang remaining nonbinary, while both of the “good” outcomes are associated with Fang desisting from being nonbinary and identifying as female. Hint: the ‘coorelation doesn’t equal causation’ argument doesn’t exactly hold water when what you’re defending is a piece of carefully-crafted propaganda.

I just can't imagine anyone would seriously want to put up with the OG Tomb Raiders in TYOOL 2024, I remember absolutely hating the controls back when it came out on the PS1 too.

Yeah, I remember liking Tomb Raider 2 a lot back in the day, but then I also remember how the controls worked, and how clunky they were. And how there was a big difference between move forward, and move forward one step. It also always felt like for 99% of the jumping puzzles, there was exactly one solution, and it looked like run, jump, grab, shimmy, mantle, run, step, step, turn, sidestep, turn, standing jump, grab, shimmy, drop, roll, pause, roll, side-jump, back step, backflip, done. But if you did three steps instead of two the whole sequence was hosed up.

I played a little bit of the first tomb raider, and then never played any tomb raider ever again, because of how loving god awful the controls for the first one were.

Yeah, I was briefly interested when I saw they were doing a rerelease, but it doesn't sound like it'll be worthwhile for me. I also couldn't really get into the original games way back when PS1/N64 were the newest consoles I had, and I don't think these versions will do anything for me without that nostalgia.

Yeah I like it. Turned combat down to easy because it's as jerky and laborious as it's made out to be, which is probably the reason for the lower score. Just doesn't feel right. The setting, voice acting, story and environments are absolutely fantastic however and I put much more stock in all that.
