Some good affordable espresso machines are the Breville Dual Boiler, Gaggia Classic or Rancilio Silvia for machines with milk frothing capabilities. If you want just espresso then something like the Flair 58 and if you want both steam and a hand pulled lever machine then a La Pavoni Professional is nice.

Spend the same amount again on a grinder.

i was just talking to a buddy about the manual espresso press (? no idea of the right terminology here) and it sounds pretty fun to dial in. kinda tempting, i never want to have to deal with an espresso machine when it needs servicing and poo poo but i do like it.

though the nanopresso thing i got for camping is actually surprisingly good

Manual espresso with lever machines, is cool and good and really easy. Because you control the force and speed through the whole shot you get a really good feel as to how it's going and what you'll need to change. You'll be making great espresso in no time. I got a La Pavoni Expo 2015 and it's the last coffee machine I'll need.

None of this is necessary, but it's cool as poo poo. I wouldn't mind having a set of luxury coffee for when I'm feeling fancy, or want to do coffeeporn tiktoks.

these are all 4 digits so i guess it is safe to assume that espresso is not a thing we should get into until we're mega serious about it

amazon is aggressively promoting this at me but i assume $200 is bad

the gaggia classic isn't 4 digits but you're still going to have to spend at least that much again on a grinder and yeah it's not really worth it unless you're willing to spend way too much money

set an alert on slickdeals or anywhere that tracks deal with Breville stuff you can generally get them considerably cheaper here and there. I bought one without the integrated grinder then I found the breville grinder on sale some time later. at least with breville you get both the single wall and dual wall filters if you buy pre-ground stuff that isn’t super fine for espresso.

Don't even bother buying an espresso machine if you're going to used preground coffee in a pressurized portafilter lol

You could buy a $200 legit burr grinder and it wouldn't even make any difference because a $200 one still won't give you fine enough control to make real espresso.

If someone gifts you a cheap espresso machine, for example, and the very air quotey "espresso" is enough to enjoy occasionally probably in the form of a cappuccino machine by all means use it with your current grinder, but do not spend $500 on a cheap espresso machine and slightly better grinder in the misguided belief that it will get you closer to real espresso. Put the money aside toward maybe buying something better in 10 years.
