haha hell yeah. genuinely the most heartening gesture or statement i've seen from a global superpower on this conflict. even from the perspective of like, pure cynical realpolitik, it is obviously in China's best interest to wait for the US & its vassals to act like bloodthirsty, craven incompetents (this part has already happened) and then side with the opposition. if you want to put yourself at the center of whatever comes next when the west implodes, you want to be friends with the people they've been immiserating for centuries. i hope it's not just an empty gesture & they back it up with material aid to Gaza, but this is a good start

yeah... when i typed "heartening statement from a global superpower" i realized what an oxymoron that was lol. i want to be optimistic that some nation with access to the levers of power will step in, but it's becoming increasingly unlikely -- like you said, China can just do the "luigi wins at mario party by doing nothing" approach as long as the US keeps showing its rear end in every international venture, and i don't think they have the ideological skin in the game that would drive them to direct intervention/conflict. i just want to hope that it won't come down to how long Hamas & Yemen can hold out against constant bombardment...

China’s stance is pragmatic because the US is so loving touchy about Israel that they would undoubtedly retaliate somehow, and it’s hard to know how. Suppose they tried to do something very stupid with Taiwan in response to diplomatic, economic or military links with Israel being cut off? Well, that’s an insanely dangerous situation because we’re not talking about the risk of regional war anymore, but world war. The US supported a coup in Pakistan because Khan didn’t provide arms to Ukraine. Whatever they did in Asia in response to China taking a hard line to Israel’s genocide would probably be deranged.
