Every time I go to see my family physician, they have me fill out a alcohol/drug screening form. Basically: do you drink more than x/week? Do you recreationally do other drugs?

After the nurse glances at that completed form, they inevitably hand me the follow-up form that demands to know how many times each week I am prostituting myself to support my drug habit. And a bunch of similar questions.
The doctor and I have a laugh about it every time and he assures me he's not worried about my frequent weed use.

"The Man Who Cannot Deadlift"

A relative had me look over their medical records for some reason and it was really funny to see that they were listed as a former smoker and only an occasional drinker. The guy smoked every time I saw him and put away 2-3 tallboys a night. The man’s diagnosed with COPD and basically dying but it’s really important to him that the doctors think he’s taking care of himself I guess

It's the beginning of the end for being able to add "reddit" to the end of search results to get anything halfway decent.

https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/22/24079978/reddit-ipo-public-offering-shares-power-users

quote:

On Thursday, Reddit filed its S-1 registration statement with the SEC detailing its finances and business goals ahead of its imminent initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RDDT.

In its S-1 document, Reddit said it made $804 million in revenue last year, the vast majority of which came from advertising. However, the company is unprofitable, with a net loss of $90.8 million in 2023.

...

Reddit lists data licensing and model training as part of its monetization strategy. Earlier on Thursday, it announced an AI training data deal with Google that will give the search giant “more efficient ways to train models” and real-time access at a reported price of about $60 million per year. Reddit currently generates most of its revenue from advertising, as 98 percent of its revenue came from ads from 2022 to 2023.

“We expect our data advantage and intellectual property to continue to be a key element in the training of future LLMs”

“I have never been more excited about Reddit’s future than I am right now,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman writes in the filing. “We have many opportunities to grow both the platform and the business, the latter through advertising, monetizing commerce on the platform, and licensing data... As the world becomes increasingly data-driven, we offer solutions that are human- and experience-focused. We expect our data advantage and intellectual property to continue to be a key element in the training of future LLMs.”

I think this is basically an old complaint but I just can't believe how bad facebook has gotten.

It's basically the only social media I use (unless forums count), for the local community group, messenger, marketplace and some hobby groups. But I hardly see any actual humans post anything anymore there and facebook seems to work hard on actively making the user experience worse.

If I scroll through the feed it's all groups about dumb memes or marvel and lotr and other pop culture, a lot of it has that AI generated feel and I can't help wonder what actual human would join these bullshit groups?

Years ago they switched to this idiot filtered comment view that only shows "top comments", it's entirely useless and sucks. People have complained for years about it but facebook doesn't even provide a setting that you want the deault view to be all comments, now comments also pop up into their own little window making it harder to read.

Just complete enshittification and surely it can't result in anything but speeding up people abandoning FB as a platform. At least I found a chrome plugin that puts all comments back as default view.

I know "air travel" is such low hanging fruit for this thread that it's practically cheating, but I have a specific sub-complaint: cabin interiors.

I did a round-trip on some 737s, same aircraft type, same number of rows, but on the way out it was a recent refurb - you could tell by the little phone shelves next to a USB charging port. And it was insanely uncomfortable. The seats were hard and felt narrower than normal, and were mostly plastic. And the space under the aisle seats was very narrow, for reasons.

On the way back, it was an obviously older revision, with fabric seats that felt much nicer, and somehow felt wider. I didn't get a tape measure out to see if the aisles were different widths. I understand the concept of jamming as many rows in as possible, but I'm not sure what advantage they get from making things narrower and harder

Hell, same. If cops ever get evidence of you having been involved with anything weed related here they can(and do) report that to the German DMV, which will get your license revoked and block you for applying for a new one for a couple months, years or even forever. After/if the block ends you have to go through a psychological evaluation, prove long term drug abstinence and do driving school again. This basically means losing your job for a lot of people who need the license for work.

Imagine this poo poo happening to you because cops caught you smoking a joint in the park or some random drug hair test showed that you smoked something 2 months ago. I have zero doubts if there is ever a leak of medical records, cops will use that information with zero hesitation. And IT security at your average doctor's office is a joke.

aside from just general cost savings (ie. the less comfortable materials are cheaper) i think they also do it so youre inclined to consider an upgraded seat next time such as delta's comfort plus (slightly wider seat with slightly more padding and slightly more legroom... probably still a downgrade from a coach seat 20 years ago)

I do not want to meet the person to whom it appeals. Why has the algorithm decided I want to see historic pictures of Salem, OR, a city to which I have never been? Instagram does the same thing, and all it does is make me spend less time on their platform.

Were you in an exit row? Those seats are narrower to fit the tray table in the armrest, and harder so that people can stand on them during an evacuation. And newer seats are harder in general because they break in over time.

Very few 737s have the in arm tray table in them and use the standard one from the seat back but with extended length on the arms holding the table. The newer seats are more slender so you can include more rows without sacrificing leg room. We just refreshed all of our 737-900s and 800s at my airline to do this.

It just be pretty difficult to go through life not understanding how to measure stuff. A 32 inch pitch is a 32 inch pitch regardless of how you achieve it. In this case, they reduced padding to include more rows with a 32 inch pitch.

E: for more context, the 737-800 also has a 3rd rear lav that can be removed for more space as well. Pretty common for aircraft to have adjustable interiors like this and the battle for space is constant

Yeah you decrease seat thickness to fit an extra row but making seats narrower on a 737 has no possible purpose except unique cases like armrest IFE. Nobody is fitting a 7th seat in a 737 row. Even RyanAir has the same 17.3 inch seat as everyone else.
