This reminds me so much of Narendra Modi. How is his and Trump's relationship? I remember he did have a trip to India where he mispronounced Tendulkar's name. But I dunno if he has said/done anything in particular in praise of the BJP's anti-muslim fascism.

There was just one meeting and a couple partnerships were signed, but Modi and Trump held basically the same views when it came to Islamic extremism and terrorism, which is about the only commonality you'd find between them. Modi had a warmer relationship with Obama by comparison.

They set the bar as low as it could go so far. They were basically tankie posters who got power. Their idea was they'd be completely self sufficient so everybody was supposed to be a farmer and also contribute things like iron. It turns out not everyone is cut out to be a farmer and making pig iron in your back yard is actually very low quality. Then Pol Pot being the genius he is, after murdering, genociding, and starving his people, fearing a Vietnam invasion, invaded Vietnam. Which promptly invaded and easily overthrew them in a year with support of Cambodians. Nelson Mandingo fucked around with this message at 10:42 on Feb 23, 2024 |

I mean yes, there were movements that were more insane than the GOP, but I think what's pretty unique about the US is that the mass insanity is embraced by 50% of the population and normalized by the other 50% as something they need to respect and as part of civil discourse. Even in Germany during the rise of Nazism people at least were polarized and knew it was abnormal, dangerous and something to fight against, they just lost due to stupid power deals made by top level opportunists.

Yeah I agree that the majority of the country is way, way too apathetic. Just pushing back on the "50% of the US embrace MAGA" because it's a common narrative and one which only serves to bolster their bullshit

I live in New england and in the last 20 years my overwhelmingly dem state has legalized gay marriage, decriminalized and then legalized borh medical and recreational weed, and just recently enacted protections for out of state abortion seekers to not be prosecuted back in their chud states. Maine recently instituted ranked choice voting. The gop has lost its mind and its sad that it has as much support as it does but I think perspective is important. A lot of what we're seeing is just classic reactionary poo poo, regressives trying to put the genie back in the bottle. And it always fails eventually, and will fail more as the older generations go away.

That's a longer journey than driving through California Don't get me wrong, I do get your point and agree with you - I just think it's a bad comparison to Europe in terms of travel time

The cultural differences in distance perception seem to be more about American lack of public transport infrastructure, and the corollary of American willingness to commute insane distances by car
