Yes, because if you offer someone two identical TVs except one has ads and one doesn't but the one that doesn't costs an extra $300, they're going to pick the one that has ads. Also, recurring revenue is like crack cocaine to executives.

Probably, but if you get a streaming box you never have to interact with the tv’s OS, which is a nice sidestep.

When I had the house build, that area was originally suppose to be for a fireplace with the "TV area" in the windowless basement. I saved like $12k not putting in a fireplace. I'd rather be upstairs.

How would you pack up a 65" tv to move a long distance? I threw the box out after a couple months. Thinking maybe I'll try local subreddit for somebody who recently bought a tv and was about to throw their box out.

Home Depot has boxes for moving TVs. Bubble-wrap it, put in box and tape it up generously. I did that for my 55" when I moved from Chicago to Calgary last October. And remove the stand/feet and box that up separately.

I had two TVs, one I kept the box for and another I got the U-Haul flat screen box for. Both arrived perfectly fine.

The time I moved before that and my company paid for relocation they sent a guy to build a custom wooden crate around the TV. When it arrived it looked like they dropped it off the truck and it was broken.

So I guess if the U-Haul box isn't good enough then a crate probably won't help.

What upgrades are expected on the 42 inch version of the C4 over the C3? Considering finally jumping into the OLED game.

Unless they're adding the multi lens array from the G series, i wouldn't expect much. I think i read the C series is keeping last year's processor. Might see a brightness bump, but i wouldn't hold my breath.

Just pulled the trigger on a 77 G3 - does anyone have a preferred recessed box to go in the wall behind it? I just need it to have an outlet for power, and a place to snake a single HDMI and ethernet up.

No lens array. The C4 is using the general line panels. (I think the G and M4 lines use the new META2 panels and get to like 1,200 Nits for HDR). However, the C4 gets the A9 AI processor which helps it hit 144hz refresh rate. And the usual hokum about better upscaling, smoother image, etc.

Are OLED TVs more fragile to touch than LEDs? One of my cats has a habit at pawing at the tv occasionally when something interesting (usually another cat) to him is on. He never uses his claws but he uses enough pressure sometimes that I can see the ripple a little bit from it. He’s never caused permanent damage with my cheapo Hisense TV.

Due to the way they're constructed, OLED panels have glass screens like a phone. This makes them more durable, but heavier.

So the old Sanyo TV has the blue hue? How was it connected? Blue hue reminds me of one of the component cables being loose or unplugged.

I think the biggest change from the C3->C4 is 120->144hz, it seems like? That wouldn't affect me whatsoever.

I see amazon has the 65" C3 on sale for $1400, that seems like a pretty decent sweet spot. I find myself unlikely to spring for a G4 price-wise since it's coming at $2000 more ($3400 starting for a G4 65").

"I could kiss you on the nuts."
If you’re using the TV as your PC monitor, I think it’s helpful but 144hz at 4K is tough to hit in most games unless you’re sporting a 4090. If you’re a playing a console, the C3 is certainly more than enough.

Hey all. Would appreciate some advice;

I am disabled - have retinitis pigmentosa. It's an eye condition that impacts a number of areas of my life, but in terms of nerd crap, it means that I can have trouble discerning really dark or dimly-lit images. I often have to crank the brightness when I'm playing a game like the REsident Evil 4 remake or Elden Ring on the TV.

My wife and I are in the market for a new TV at the minute. Our budget is somewhere between £500 and £700 and are looking for a 65 inch. From what I've read online, a QLED seems like it might be the best option for me, as it offers bright colours without washing the image out. OLEDs seem very cool, but I think I might value a vibrant image more than really good darks/contrasts.

Also, I'm a bit unclear about whether a 60hz TV will be alright for gaming - a lot of people online seem to think a lot of modern games are unplayable this way, but others seem to think it's fine. I don't play too many split-second online FPS games, but as previously mentioned I like things like Elden Ring and Resident Evil. TCL seem to have some fairly good looking TVs for around £530.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Sorry, I'm very new to this and reddit has been hugely unhelpful (mostly it seems like TV subreddits exist for people to yell at each other about why the TV the other guy bought is a piece of poo poo)

Yes, a 60hz screen is fine for gaming. Opinions of bros on the internet about products aren’t worth the pixels to display them. 120hz is nice but the games you’re playing don’t even run at that frame rate anyway.

I’m not sure exactly what to recommend but it sounds like you’re on the right track prioritizing brightness over contrast and looking more to traditional display technology rather than OLED.

Don't get a 120Hz display to play games at 120fps, get it to play games at 40fps.

Getting above 60 fps is a pretty big deal if you play games that require reflexes.

Corb3t
Jun 7, 2003

There are also features like VRR, which is nice for gaming and more common with 120hz displays. Doesn’t really matter if the content won’t go above 60fps.

I’m not saying you should buy a tv for this feature alone, but it may be worth considering when you decide on a specific model.
