How is that a 3rd amendment issue? They're just letting VA medical staff use military hospitals, probably because the civilian ones in those regions are all falling apart or being shuttered because they aren't delivering 300% shareholder returns.

We're working on a big multi generational project in Seattle where we hope to be able to one day connect the city to its suburbs by train. We know we'll never live to see it but perhaps our children or, failing that, our children's children will be able to take a half hour train ride across the metro area :patriot: I had thought we were going to beat the project to connect LA to LV by passenger train that had been taking decades despite the fact that the cities are already connected by commercial trains, but someone told me they've finally started making progress and it might get done by 2030. What a scifi future of twenty thirty where you can take trains from one crappy hot rear end city to another.

Don't worry. Once people get sufficiently desperate and realise they can sell the scrap metal people will start to steal pieces of the rail track.

https://www.businessdefense.gov/NDIS.html - oh hey there's apparently a report on how the us should be better at this defense industry thing

quote:

Guided by this first-of-its-kind strategy, the DoD will develop more resilient and innovative supply chains, invest in small- and medium-sized businesses, and strengthen and grow American innovation and manufacturing ecosystems across both the private sector and the government- owned organic industrial base (OIB). DPA, IBAS, ManTech, AM Forward, and similar efforts will bolster and expand America’s ability to innovate and produce the warfighting capabilities at a speed and scale that will help guarantee the ability to fight and win in any conflict.

We need to shift from policies rooted in the 20th century that supported a narrow defense industrial base, capitalized on the DoD as the monopsony power, and promoted either/or tradeoffs between cost, speed, and scale. We need to build a modernized industrial ecosystem that includes the traditional defense contractors – the DIB primes and sub-tier defense contractors who provide equipment and services – and also includes innovative new technology developers; academia; research labs; technical centers; manufacturing centers of excellence; service providers; government-owned, contractor-operated (GOCO) facilities; and finance streams, especially private equity and venture capital. As we build a modernized industrial ecosystem, we remain mindful of the environment in which private industry operates and look to work with them to tackle adverse impacts which can manifest during change and modernization.

we're off to a great start

edit:

quote:

Non-Competitive Practices: Unfair trade practices in the post-Cold War era, especially non-competitive policies employed by our adversaries (e.g., unfair subsidies, dominance-driven acquisitions, hidden ownership, transfer of critical technology, flouting trade agreements), have harmed U.S. and Allied defense-related industry.

Look the US defence industry can absolutely deliver the everything needed at acceptable cost, timeframe and shareholder value. We just need one thing.

Let's bring back slave labour. Lots of drums and whips too.

going to be hearing a lot of "shape, promote, incentivize" and other similar words am i

edit:

quote:

Encouraging defense suppliers to build substantial spare production capacity will require a coordinated effort by industry, Congress, DoD, and other federal departments and agencies; a public recognition of the associated burden to the taxpayer and the economy itself; and a broad acceptance of the defense industry, including our global industrial partners, as vital for national defense.

Congress can explore allocating additional funding for contracts and other incentives (tax incentives, regulatory relief, long-term contracts) aimed specifically at building and maintaining spare production capacity. Such funding can be used to modernize and expand facilities and develop flexible production.

The DoD will seek to establish risk-sharing mechanisms and technology-sharing structures to jointly fund, develop, and secure spare production capacity. The DoD will also plan for needed spare production capacity and to provide oversight authority to ensure successful development and sustainment follow-through.

dod can only do nothing but ask congress to please toss more money at the captains of industry

It's a non-starter from the first point: "Incentivize industry to improve resilience by investing in extra capacity"

Good luck incentivizing them to do that guys. lol they'll choose it over stock buybacks, for sure.

Especially as industry has already stated their requirement to invest in extra capacity - open ended production contracts. The state doesn't want that so industry went "well okay then, enjoy low rate production at premium prices".

Researching new ways to "incentivize industry" is plate spinning when the variables are already openly known and on the table.

Военная хроника posted:

What is known about new versions of the Geranium-2 drone

On February 6, (https://simorgh.io/files/)corporate documents from the servers of the Iranian company IRGC Sahara Thunder appeared in the public domain. The credibility of this data is still under great question, but a number of curious points are still worth considering in detail.

▪️ The cost of Shahed 136 kamikaze drones (Geranium-2) was initially estimated at $375,000, but was later halved.

▪️ With full localization of production with minimal supplies of Iranian components, the cost of Geranium-2 should have fallen fourfold - to $48.8 thousand per unit.

▪️ A jet version of the Geran-2 drone does exist and has been tested. The flight speed of this modification with the index M-237, supposedly exceeds 600 km/h, while the usual kamikaze drone "Geran-2" develops a speed of 180 km/h. The drone is equipped with a built-in Nasir satellite jamming receiver and can target a variety of targets, including enemy drones.

▪️ The MS-236 modification with an optical guidance system can be equipped with a thermal imager and can hit objects with an accuracy of up to 3 meters.

▪️ The documents also mention IRGC Sahara Thunder and drones under the index 107B and 107C. The former can presumably be used for reconnaissance and surveillance and visually resemble Iran's Shahed 129, while the latter can be used as a means of defeat.

▪️ Localization of drone production has turned out to be a fairly uncomplicated process, with 156 trainees and 117 senior specialists (or regular employees of one of the enterprises in the Alabuga SEZ) doing much of the work.

▪️ Iran has localized the production of 90% of components in the development of these drones, and the missing elements are bought on open markets, which is generally not a secret.

▪️ After localization it is possible to produce 10 thousand drones per year.

If the characteristics of the products are confirmed in the near future, the new modifications of "Geraniums" can seriously complicate the life of the AFU not only in the front line, but also far beyond its borders.
