Yeah I gotta admit I'm kind of in favor of that. Just give me a billion thumbnails for other stuff to click on, and shuffle the idiots arguing about memes and calling each other slurs somewhere far away.

I mean, the mobile/tablet youtube apps has the suggested videos front and center, with comments requiring interactions to see them. It seems natural they get web in line with ux standards across the range. Comments nowadays are mostly repeating a quote in the video, racist screeching or lovely memes so removing them altogether would be fine too.

They've done something to the comment weighting algorithm in the last few years, youtube comments are usually quite positive these days. It used to be just a total toxic cesspit down there, these days it's bland but mostly inoffensive. Sometimes this has weird results, like any military march for example will have a bunch of authoritarian-smelling nostalgia down there. But it's not negative!

Yeah, and on retro tech videos in particular the comments are often very useful with people swapping repair tips or talking about their experiences with the technology in question. YouTube comments definitely have a reputation for a reason, but losing the ability to comment on videos in general would be a big loss.

I like the comments because people tend to highlight notable timestamps in the videos I watch at least. Generally speaking I haven't seen too much negativity or toxicity in Youtube comments, and if it's there, it's usually one person being a shithead and literally everyone else dogpiling them to gently caress off.

if that new layout is indeed what they're going for I think it's going to be a positive. One of the things I hate about the current youtube layout is how if you want to read the comments while the video is playing you have to scroll past the video. If the comments are moved to the side and can be scrolled independent of the rest of the page it'll solve that complaint. In re comments in general, once your videos escape the target audience field and start popping up in "normie" feeds, the comments take a huge dip in quality and tone. Shorts exit the target audience field immediately and get fed to the biggest mouth breathers on the site, and the comments are Bad.

I'm not exactly sure how the various pieces of software (it's the iOS app, but that can mean a "desktop" layout) work, but yeah on my iPad Pro 12.9" (not bragging, providing the size so there's an idea of screen size) the comments come up along side the video and it's really nice to see them both at the same time.

i take this back. i pointed out a youtuber made a mildly controversial comment in a video two months ago (vim vs emacs) and i'm STILL getting idiots responding to the thread accusing me of being on one side or another. please kill the notifications. please.

I really like Sublime Text but now just use Visual Studio Code which is almost as good. I think it swiped a bunch of features from Sublime. Nice thing is you can just set it up to ssh/scp to whatever Linux system and change stuff so you rarely need to use a console editor like vi.

I know he probably gets hate in this thread because he's on the influencer side of the tech spectrum - and all the algorithm chasing in his vids do annoy me, the overediting, the English guy americanizing the prices and narrative for that bigger audience slice, the strange forced RP accent masking a real Nottingham accent, etc etc... but I was surprised by how much enjoyed Arun's latest video! A lotta fun seeing all these weird cheap India knockoff gadgets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdlLUogNYMw
