You know if you communicate with your team and don't abandon calldowns, you could have just two people take a backpack/railgun and wait 5 minutes to get your own, saving the slots for more explodies.

My squad has concluded that chargers absolutely loving hate sentries. Before we unlocked railguns we'd toss a gatling or autocannon turret up a hill or perpendicular to our route and they'd pretty reliably peel off from the swarm to kill it.

Turrets are best used against dudes as you run away because most things are more easily killed by shooting them in their rear end. I also like to throw them over enemies' heads for the same reason on those evacuation missions

I burned another $40 to play this from the comfort of my couch, and what in the absolute gently caress? It doesn't bring my progression across to PS5? The Steam version wouldn't let me play until I went through Captcha Hell to link it to my Playstation account! It never even occurred to me to check, because why would I need to do all that if I wasn't creating The Helldivers Account Linked To My Playstation Profile?

I don't think they do refunds so I played a couple hours anyway, and man, I feel a lot more vulnerable on a controller. I don't know how you play without being able to whip the mouse around to target all the little bugs that rush you. I also wish there was a better solution to push-to-talk than using the PS5 mic button, cause it brings up a little Playstation mute notice every time you press it.

A common misconception that I'm sure Sony would like more people to fall victim to. You can just skip all that account linking bullshit and still play without any issues on PC. Does seem odd that progression isn't carried over if you have linked accounts though - tried a support ticket?

I play controller on PC and it rules. I don't feel any more efficient with mkb.

I've kind of moved on from playing anything but strategy games with mkb though. Controller feels like I'm having fun. Mkb feels like it's time to write a report.

Take a shield backpack now you can't be slowed by green bugs and don't get gibbed by rockets or stalkers or acid.

Now

Shoot chargers in the leg twice - then dump a Breaker or Defender mag into the open leg.

Shoot titans in the mouth when they're charging up.

Shoot Hulks and tanks in the eye or back radiator

Then try doing the same thing with a RR or Spear.

See my problem with this whole "the railgun is op" thing is the only difference between it and the autocannon in this context is that it doesn't need a backpack to reload. But it also has to charge, and needs to reload after every shot. Also it needs level 20.

I can see why the railgun is good, it just doesn't feel as good as people are saying, and I'd rather lug around the autocannon because it feels more versatile. Hell, I don't even find the shield backpack that helpful because in this game if you're getting hit you're probably in a poo poo position in the first place, so if you're bad at dealing with bugs like me it's not going to save you from getting swarmed or anything.

The railgun is quite literally more versatile than the autocannon in what it can kill - the only thing the AC will take out that the Railgun cannot is fabricators/holes and structures (because the AC counts as an explosive).
Not only that but it kills things the AC won't even touch - without eating up a backpack slot. The shield becomes invaluable at high level versus bots, where eating rockets out of nowhere becomes commonplace. Are you sure you're running it on Unsafe? Because unsafe Railgun is devastatingly strong to the point of one-shotting everything that isn't a charger, titan or tank.

How do you say all this and not mention the actual biggest difference between the autocannon and railgun, the one that underlies literally every discussion of it, its ability to chew through heavy armor, is beyond me.

And you say it as "in this context" in response to a post literally listing that ability.

Confusing as heck.

Because I was specifically referring to the context of "just shoot it twice in the leg then swap weapons" or "just shoot it in the weakpoint" both of which the autocannon does very well as well. The railgun is fine, but people acting like it's some kind of god gun that does these things in special ways nothing else does is insane.

The AC is a great weapon. The issue with the railgun is that is doesn't really occupy a niche. It's very good against everything and the bugged out AT options that aren't EAT are too unreliable to wrestle the railgun from it's near default spot as the AT gun.

You don't have to shoot the charger legs either. You can just shoot them in the head a few times. It's effective against pretty much everything weak point hit or not.

I think the AC is objectively better against bots if you can shoot red lights with it, but against bugs the railgun should be competing with or complimenting the other heavy AT options, but they're broken rn.

To be fair the RR can do most of those as well. Think the Hulk front weak point it cant do tho and it only needs one shot to strip charger armor so minor differences.

The RR takes a backpack and reloads while stationary. These are huge downsides that are very hard to mitigate compared to "takes slightly longer, and can blow yourself up if you take too long to shoot."

A huge part of this is that how the shield backpack negates both the slowing effects of bugs, and the omnipresent risk of 1 hit kills vs. Rocket Devestators.

Doesn't need a backpack, has 20 ammo.

What's comparable then? That backpack slot absolutely matters.

Yea, but you usually only need one shot.

You get 3 brood commanders with an army of warriors coming at you, and your railgun and primary will probably get run dry.

AC can handle the whole bunch of them in a fraction of the time and still have 2/3rds of your ammo left.

1stGear

Here's to the new us.
The biggest advantage the railgun has over other options is not needing a backpack. I love the autocannon, but having to take a backpack with it does limit my options. Whereas with the railgun I can take a support weapon that is just as effective while also taking a Guard Dog or shield or supply pack. That's a pretty significant boost regardless of what faction or difficulty you're one.

I suspect Arrowhead's intention was that the whole team reload thing would make the RR or autocannon more effective than the railgun as long as you have a buddy loading for you, but in actual practice that doesn't ever happen.

It still has to reload every shot and needs to charge, it's a slow weapon. The backpack slot mattering is a matter of preference, a lot of people sleep on carrying around supply packs to reload team mates in a fight or whatever even. At no point did I say the railgun was bad, just that in that specific example cited it wasn't actually any different than another gun and like three people jumped in to get mad over it.

I'm on team nerf the rail gun now because lmao

The fact that doing a sick max payne dodge out of the way of a charger and unloading your gun into it until its back half explodes in a shower of gore is objectively badass, and yet they discourage that so heavily in favor of some dumb thing where you shoot it in the leg twice, is wack
