I've seen John Oliver live recently and get the sense that he's more leftist than he lets on during his show. He started off with a rant about billionaires. He mentioned he was offered to be knighted by the queen but turned it down because of how much he hates the monarchy, then did a short explanation of how the Windsors became the royal family and was basically like "there's no reason we should worship these assholes when they skipped 15 people to find a monarch just because of how scared of catholicism they were." His stand up was extremely good. His show's jokes sometimes don't land well, especially considering he's talking about an extremely serious topic, and brevity isn't what's needed. But overall, I love that he often takes what isn't a well-known topic and does a deep dive (as much as you can in a 30-minute window). Anyway, yaall need to treat Blindsite's posting a little bit like General Dog's posting lol

His stand up was extremely good. I don't really care, watch whatever trash you want but I was asked so I'll answer: the guy continuously spouts misinterpretations or even outright lies about both his nation's and European history so he can get seal claps from midwit champagne socialists. Its pretty typical of most of those light entertainment masquerading as news shows. You make just enough of an effort to appear to be factual and investigative to gain legitimacy, write enough average material to be able to hide behind the shield of "its only a joke". Sure he does some good with the occasional little light shining on some charity or someone who did something cool but he's still bought and paid for by the machine and he bends the knee any time they tug his leash. This formula isn't unique to the US, there's plenty of clowns on the TV out here that do the same schtick. I don't really have any hate for the dude I just don't care to listen to anything he has to say at this point. But then again I'm just tired and bitter lately so try not to put too much stock, I don't really engage with a lot of politics anymore. I just read my books and watch my sports.

I’m not trying to sound lovely but you ever thought about getting a pet? You seem the type with money and free time to get a good pup. Even I’m warming up to the cat the wife picked up I hate having pets cause I was raised with a few that died super early so I’ve just been weary of getting attached( the wife’s new cat is glued to my hip as I type this) a sexual elk fucked around with this message at 09:32 on Feb 28, 2024 |

I love dogs, but I'm out of the house for 12 hours a day at a minimum and I try to fill my weekend with a bunch of poo poo so I don't become a shut in. I know dogs have no concept of time but I couldn't leave my mate alone all day every day like that. I've thought about a cat, but I've never had one and they kinda seem like dicks.

The first time I visited America, I flew in from Chicago to Kansas City and stayed in Wichita. It snowed on the Sunday, had what I guess was a typical, many hour midwestern thunderstorm on Monday morning into the afternoon and was bright, sunny and in the mid to low seventies fahrenheit from Wednesday on, all in the middle of March

The nice thing about being a pet uncle is that it's all of the joy of owning a pet but none of the responsibilities. My housemate is back from Montana and their dog was nice enough to wake me up at 5am by barking at a raccoon that was outside my window.

West coast drought chat: Yeah, Oregon needs snow in the mountains every year. That’s what provides the freshwater in the Willamette Valley annually. Not sure about central Oregon and (shudder) eastern. Fridge chat: My first apartment in Japan was fully furnished because it was the English teacher in town’s place for at least a decade before I moved in, and is likely still housing whoever is teaching there for the town. When I came to Tokyo I got into a lovely place that had some furnishings, including a fridge…that was basically a college mini-fridge. It’s all there was space for. Moved into my first “proper” apartment and it needed everything, including a stove setup, fridge, washing machine, even some light fixtures. That’s pretty standard here. Second real place, similar, and for that one my now-wife and I bought a good new Toshiba refrigerator that we still have in our home 6+ years later. I hope it lasts a while.

I read and enjoyed Shogun in high school but I don’t remember if there is any problematic stuff in it. Given when it was written it feels like there absolutely has to be, but all of his books kind of blur together so I can’t remember if Shogun specifically had issues.

Poor Ellie We had this scheduled for one of the cats the weekend before this past one, but she deteriorated so fast we ended up cancelling and taking her in mid-week which we felt really bad about, but the vet we took her to made it a bit more pleasant than the one I put my dog down at a few years ago so we were happy with that. It was still a lovely situation that kind of happened out of the blue though which really sucked and I miss her lots. The in-home thing is the way to go though. Every other time I've done this, everyone settled. Today we got in, 140 or so people and they announced 2 trials, one civil, one criminal then immediately split us in half and put us in court, asked a few questions and have been doing individual interviews for 2 hours now and aren't at my number yet I'm at most 25th
