There are claims that latinos, millenials, and black people are suddenly now switching to voting R en masse, which is where these polls are showing their huge swings, and that doesn't really seem to mirror reality at all.

I'm not saying they're affecting polling at all, just responding to the sentiment that Latinos got scared away from voting R because of their bigotry. Many do not care one bit about that.

I’m worried this line of thinking will be discarded by the SCOTUS as alarmist and unjustified, but realistically I don’t see them buying Trump’s argument that presidents would need total immunity to govern, lest they want to nullify every presidential administration before their say in the matter.

Oof no see that just reduces all Latinos to a single leftist population in your brain, which they are NOT. Florida is a conservative Cuban haven, for example.

Latinos are not one single identity - that's an umbrella term for a lot of different peoples - you have to consider where people are from, what they've experienced, and what side of the political spectrum they were on before they left home, if they're refugees themselves. All of that affects their politics, not just 'R's hate them so they hate R's'.

No it doesn't.

I'm litterally just describing the voting trend of latinos in general for the last decade plus.

The reality is they vote D by large margins most of the time.

Those votes aren't guaranteed but Trump and the R's don't seem to be ones to shift them to voting R.

And what I'm saying is, that's reductionist considering when you break down how they vote based on diaspora you get a greater view into things.

Latinos in Florida largely don't vote Democrat, which has a large effect on things considering how important Florida is to the EC

Ron DeSantis' victory is in part attributed to Latino votes. And that fucker has been messing with all of us.

Look, polling and treating 'latinos' as one lump is a fuckin problem that makes it so people imagine all Latinos as leftists which allows the conservatives yet more power but sure ok let's go with 'nothing matters because anything can be further stratified' jfc

It's like saying everywhere in the US is the same and can be lumped together culturally, which is notttt true. We understand that California is different from Florida, and separate the two, so why can you not make room for the fact that the Latino populations in both places are very different? And thus have different effects on the larger political stage.

Most of the Cuban contingent is in Florida so yea it'll definitely impact Florida, but I'm not sure if there are millions of Cuban voters across the entire country.

The census in 2023 puts it at 2,850,000 Cuban Americans. The Majority of concentration is in Florida and the east coast.

I think it’s more like the Greek vs Roman view of power, ca 300 BCE. The diadochoi followed Alexander’s lead in adopting Persian-style god-emperor rhetoric and imagery, whereas the Romans had this abstract idea of imperium as something that could be vested in a magistrate but was not his property or inextricable from him. In the former view, Antigonus II or Philip V or whoever is the source of all good things and benefactor of his people and agent of Zeus on Earth, whereas in the latter, the power of the Senate and People is put under the (temporary) control of a Consul or Praetor who is expected to use good judgment in using it—but could be in real trouble if he is later found to have abused it.

Trump is basically trying to be Julius Caesar, ie building up such a strong base of popular support that he can cast the Senate’s justice department’s very unfair, very politically motivated trials against him as proof that he needs to be given unlimited power and have a month named after him. Just as Caesar saw how much power Cleopatra had and wanted some of that god-emperor mojo for himself, you can see how Trump envies the positions that Kim and Putin are in and wants something similar.

e: if Mitch McConnell had any guts he and
Mike Pence could have been the Cassius/Brutus duo of our generation, although I realize that would mean their eventual getting murked by, I dunno, an alliance of Jared Kushner and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Baby, we're rich
How you ask about identity in a poll can change how people group themselves, particularly if the poll only has 5-6 categories. Iirc there's been a shift where people who previously identified as White have become more comfortable identifying as White Hispanic, meanwhile second or third generation mixed race kids tend to lean away from Hispanic as an identity.
I wouldn't be surprised if the lovely DNA test industry is encouraging more people to identify as mixed race who wouldn't have self-identified that way in the past.

Cultural identity changes aren't a "problem", to be clear- but it means you're not going to get a clean comparison, and would be a factor in polling.

They all fantasize about it for sure, but outside of the freedom caucus and maga idiots they understand that installing a dictatorship requires rolling back a pile of democratic institutions. Trump and his gang just seem to think that's how things naturally work and get confused when someone says it's a violation of norms and laws. Which may actually prevent them from doing it successfully, so it could be worse.

It’s not just Cubans in Florida (and elsewhere) voting R. There’s all kinds of conservative Hispanics out there with different reasoning.

W is the Republican who did best with Latinos in 2004, and Trump did really well with them in 2020 (though some of that is sus. There’s a South Texas county that flipped Clinton-Trump and Biden basically got the same amount of votes as Clinton, but Trump magically gained 5000 more votes. poo poo like that is why I’ll always be a bit :tinfoil: about Trump gaining votes in 2020. He might just be really good at motivating non-voters, but given that he’s a liar and a fraud about everything else, why should I accept it at face value?)

Reasons may vary, but there are indications that there’s a big chunk of the Latino vote that just loving loves Trump’s border and immigration policies. They saw the family separations and the children in cages and said “:sickos: There’s no way this will ever blow back on me!”

There’s also the weird 16-level race hierarchy in a lot of Hispanic cultures, so while we lump them together as “Latino” or “Hispanic,” they see themselves as part of a complex web of mixed ethnicities and national origins that makes little sense to white people in America.
