GABA ghoul posted:I love how oblivious those attempts to conflate language and nationality are. They just don't get that most of the world is not on board with pan-slavism or similar ideas. Like, how is this supposed to appeal to anyone in Europe? Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg speak German. Italy, Romania and France have German speaking minorities. Does that give Germany the moral right to interfere in internal French, Italian or Swiss affairs? Are they making an argument that it should have that right? And Europe is all like that. Belgium speaks French and Dutch. Finland has a Swedish speaking minority. The Balkan has their whole serbo-croatian thing going on, etc. It appeals to a lot of dads who watch too much fox news or European equivalents and spend at least half their income on lovely booze and there are a lot of dads that meet this criteria OP

Ronwayne posted:I remember my dad explaining the existence and differences between Fleming and Walloon and he implied confusing the two while in Belgium might result in escalation to violence but he was there in the '60s so I assume it was a leaded gas making people (or just him) deranged. The 60's were tumultuous times in Belgium because it used to be that Wallonia was the richer and more powerful part due to the coal mines and heavy industry there. But during that time the mines were being shut down which resulted in social unrest. Flanders was becoming more economically important and things were shifting. Some large national political parties split into French- and Dutch-speaking factions. Traditionally Dutch-speaking areas had a lot of French-speaking people moving there, shifting the political balance. (Brussels being a big one) Perhaps in those times, especially in economically hard hit Wallonian mining towns, or some of the more mixed border areas, things could get violent? (I'm way oversimplifying and glossing over a lot of things here, please forgive me Belgians). Eventually, Belgium federalized and things calmed down but the way they federalized left a lot of things unaddressed. Nowadays I don't think there's any violence and the Walloons and Flemish mostly get along in daily life, there are nationalist and separatist movements on both sides but for the most part Belgians identify as Belgian and not French or Dutch, and if not that most of them still want the country to keep existing. However, the questions left open by the federalization are still an issue to this day. The country is incredibly hard to govern, often in complete deadlock. When there's been elections it can take famously long to form a coalition. Everybody agrees that reforms are desperately needed but the question of what to do with Brussels is still unanswered for example. Again, apologies to Belgians if I got any of this incorrect! And sorry for the derail.

Vampire Panties posted:Russia also can't lose anytime soon. They've built the largest minefields ever created, and Ukraine doesnt have the material to breakout. He can drag this out for decades, although dude is 71 so there's a very finite amount of time he personally can invest in this. Its the large numbers of drones and artillery guarding it. If they push back the Russian AF and start doing runs on the Russian artillery hiding all around them they can start putting anti mine vehicles out and clearing a lane. Actual full blown demining will take years. I've seen others say a decade or so is realistic but I'm no expert on the subject. Vampire Panties posted:As to what his plan is specifically, It seems like he's willing to wait out Western support and grind the entire country into rubble. This says Russia is building 100 tanks a month, and losing 12 a week Will it work? IMO probably not, but it won't be decided anytime soon. Dapper_Swindler posted:I mean how much of a working air force does russia have, like didnt they lose ALOT of planes from strikes on airbases and such? the bigger issue is artillary and russia has alot of dumb artillary. They've got a LOT more planes than pilots. They had a critical shortage of pilots before the war started and its steadily gotten worse for them as they've had several get killed, injured, or captured while the rest are making more and more dumb mistakes because they're getting worn out by being forced to fly 24/7. Ukraine is doing a really impressive job shooting down around a plane a day lately but they'll have to maintain that for longer before the Russian AF is degraded enough that they'll hardly be able to operate in Ukraine.
