I just got caught up (almost didn't watch past episode 2) and I am surprised by how bad the show is. No character development, bad writing, Austin Butler lol, awful CGI, formulaic episodes. I'm going to finish it at this point but I'm excited to cleanse afterward with Band of Brothers.

I watched Band of Brothers and the Pacific after the first couple episodes and yeah, of the three BoB is by far the best. I think you're being a little hard on this, though, it's a lot better than the Pacific. At least it feels like there's a single throughline following around the 100th.

If I'd never heard of these before and you presented me with all three, I'd assume they started with the Pacific, ironed out some of the kinks with Masters of the Air, and then applied everything they'd learned to create Band of Brothers. As is, it's kinda bizarre that they were never able to reach those highs again.

I think it just comes down to if you can make a good story out of what happened. Band of Brothers was one company with a somewhat stable cast of characters. The Pacific is the story of three different groups of people. Masters of the Air is always going to be a bit of a mess simply because so many people die. I guess Crosley is the only person that can have a through line across the whole show because he ends up in an admin position and doesn't get sent out to die or get captured like everyone else does. I think maybe they should have dedicated two seasons to this show. Flesh out what story we can with the original guys, then continue with Rosie, with Crosley being a connector between seasons. Then spend the rest of the time looking at other aspects of the air war.

"The thing I have nostalgia for is amazing, anything new in comparison is absolute trash" is an annoyingly common attitude with any form of media.

Maybe it's the enshittification of everything in the world that's causing people to cling to everything from the past and reflexively reject anything new.

I certainly don't think that MOA is bad but I'd be lying if I didn't say I think it's a significant step down from what BoB and The Pacific delivered.

Like a lot of streaming shows, it felt like there were certain points the creators wanted to hit, and then they just fluffed over the rest. Its like they felt they couldnt show multiple episodes of any one setting, so they rushed through everything with multiple crews showing up for 1-2 episodes. They could have put Austin Butler and the other dude in the same plane, condensed the france/belgium escape and POW camp into one crew had Rosie's Riveters go to Africa etc they could have even done the classic fakeout and introduce a bunch of dudes and have them all die for Black Thursday

also they could have built up the tension w/r/t the appearance of Mustangs. I think there's one passing shot of some thunderbolts waving off at the coast of France, but bomber crews were complaining about range of fighter escorts from day one.

EDIT

as it is, there's no room for anything on this show to breathe. Part of what makes BoB great is the down scenes, like Polar Bear Winters, and MOA is left with a bunch of randos getting drunk in a Quonset hut

This show obviously had a tremendously difficult development. Nick Cuse and Graham Yost, both respectable writers, are producers on the show but have no writing credits. John Shiban, a script fixer, helped break the opening episode and then vanished from the show.

The third episode has really weird writing credits too -- "Teleplay by John Orloff" but no "Story by [x]" credit to accompany that, meaning that whoever broke the actual story essentially received no credit. (This is distinct from the "Written by" credits that normally happen on episodes, and they're distinct legal terms per the Writer's Guild).

^ That is true. And interesting info on the writing situation too. I mean, I could be wrong but feel I first heard about this show in like... 2010?? 2014?? it could have been released in any given year between then and now and been a completely different show depending on which year it was released.

The worst thing one can say about this show is that unlike BoB or The Pacific, I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about seeing the next episode. That might be muddied by the fact that I'm paying for Apple TV to watch it instead of filez'ing it.

I went out of my way last night to end my evening early to watch Shogun because it's so much better of a show it's crazy. I look forward to that show.

I'm hard-pressed at 7/8 episodes to recall a single scene from this show thus far that I'll seek out nostalgically on YouTube in the years/decades to come.

I’m just disappointed that a lot of the longer bombing mission scenes were front loaded into the show

I expected we would get more of that but instead they have outright not shown us missions or just avoided them in favor of other focuses

#2 isn't ALWAYS bad...

Masters of the Air should have been a darkly ironic title.

Basically, shoot it 100% from Crosby’s PoV, and see the entire wing get blown away around you nearly every episode. First episode sets up camaraderie and friendships and what you assume are main characters, and then every succeeding episode (one mission per episode) is a nightmare of lost friends and trauma. Introduce new crews and then have them lost one or two missions later. You could make an actually meaningful series, instead of a collection of WWII tropes collected by a baby boomer, loosely collated into a folder and then handed to a video game art director.

Yeah, let Buck and Bucky be some of the main supporting characters, and you get to cut to their planes on occasion, like you end an episode with them not returning, and the next episode shows what happened to them. Since besides being pretty the bucks have like one episode worth of real content each.

Or deciding to suddenly turn a film into a religious thing? God that stupid scene in passchendaele where an explosion causes the young dead soldiers body to be crucified. That poo poo would embarrass a PureFlix movie crew.

The best stuff in the show is the air stuff. The ground stuff can range from fine to just oh please get in the air again. Though I do like the prison camp stuff.

To be fair that was Paul Gross referencing a 1915 rumour that a Canadian soldier had been crucified by Germans during 2nd Ypres. It didn't come out of nowhere it was a pretty common story even though there's no proof to back it up.

Yea, but that story was that the Germans had stabbed bayonets into the body on the side of a barn. It may of not come out of nowhere but it felt really out of place.

In Mypos, only the strong survive.

Just getting caught up on the thread so here's some stray thoughts.

First, I think it's easy to not remember having trouble keeping characters straight the first time we watched BoB two decades ago versus having seen it a bunch of times and also actors in it becoming more famous afterwards.

Regarding the attitude that Americans won the war by themselves, yeah, sure there are people that think that but also let's not forget about our cultural factory. Of course Hollywood is going to be more interested in making war movies about Americans and those movies are going to be pumped out and around a lot more aggressively than say, a French film about Dien Bien Phu or something.

I don't think MOTA is bad by any stetch but except for episode 6 it's not at the same quality level as BoB or The Pacific (which is the best of the three). Yes, Rami Malek stole every single scene he was in. Him letting Sledge sleep on the train kills me. That said, James Badge Dale's performance is underrated.

Speaking of underrated, Charlie from Girls was incredible in the criminally underrated George Clooney produced Catch-22 series.

Three plot lines crammed into 51 minutes. No wonder it felt rushed. And we see all of 30 seconds of D-Day as a recollection, not in the moment, then it's suddenly two months later.

I feel like the last episode is going to speedrun the entire end of the war. I am curious about how the Soviets would treat POWs from allied nations.

Also from the preview, I wonder is Rosie is shot down during the Battle of the Bulge.
