when I was a kid in Thursday Island, I had to be escorted home by a police car as a year one student (along with my two older siblings, year four and year six). The reason why is the day before we got chased down by high school students, one my sisters yelled "run, get mum" turned around to face them. They beat the piss out of her, tore out about half of her hair. Blood everywhere and chunks of her scalp missing. I can still remember my mum running out with a thong in her hand, jumping the back fence and heading the way I had come. We moved to Longreach after that.

I have lived and worked in Africa for the last 10 years and travelled extensively. If you think that locals outside Australia are above a bit of picking on outsiders, you are loving stupid.

The point is that Sam is a tourist/expat interacting with police overseas. You just shut up and keep quiet, even if you are right.

I think the reason that you don't see more domestic terrorism from climate change activists is that potential ecological impact aside, on balance cutting off critical infrastructure has an overwhelmingly higher impact on the poor and vulnerable.

Blocking traffic is far less likely to impact the cost of living, or destroy a fortnight's worth of food the day after shopping day etc.

On this... these protestors/ER just pissed off a lot of people on a commute and could've at least provided a few dunnies/portaloos and some vegan grub. Could've been a great gathering of people who had time off work with a legit reason without recourse, whilst being fed and provided a way to piss or poo poo whilst they're stuck on the bridge for 2 hours. Also could be educated by ER people more broadly on the impact of Anthropogenic Climate Change if they wanted.

I'm mostly kidding, but I can't think of ways to improve optics of non-violent protests.

I also don't want to end up on a list I'm not already on, so I won't be overly reactionary and I'll simply state I feel as though peaceful protests like these just end up as footnotes on the day's news. I've had it up to my eyeballs with the inaction, lack of traction and fundamentally flawed energy policy.
But... we'll get there. I have to believe this.

Also, they'll just get heavy haulage for concrete-filled gas tanks.

To go to a really reductionist take... for every action there is an equal and opposite (and near neutral) reaction.

For example: Design an ICE that literally guzzles fuel and pumps out huge amounts (but just under the legal limit) toxic fumes... the equal/opposite reaction may be banning petrol guzzlers completely. Or we'll have a quasi-'murican reactionary group buying them up and using them out of spite. Can never tell with these things.

Violent protests are the bane of leftist groups. I have been tempted to destroy logging equipment (etc.). It seems like a way forward but it is immediately counter productive. The evil bastards you wanted to screw over just push the wreckage down a gully and buy another. By the destruction you have contributed to waste and done nothing towards prevention. This is without factoring in the 'moral' pearl clutching side of things. However it is hard to oppose these protests unless there is a clearly articulable alternative to them.
