hmm yes the random average dude desperately trying to find his wife and landing in an insane situation he's completely unprepared for vs the ex-cop whose been through multiple bioweapon incidents and is highly trained for dealing with them.

I'll agree from a pure mechanical gameplay perspective RE6 is better, especially since RE7 really lacks enemy variety, but lol if you think RE6 is better overall and isn't a hotter mess.

it is weird to me how much re7 and 8 hold utter contempt for evelyn. why does the mold girl who was being emotionally manipulated by ethan's weird bioterrorist wife have to be pure evil but the girl who's half wesker gets to live in a nice house with her adoptive family

Probably because the mold girl, if not 'emotionally manipulated', goes murder mode, infects everything around her, and mind-controls people to force them to become her family.

She was taken in by a kind family, the Bakers, and treated nicely, and then she infected them one by one and turned them into mutated psychopaths.

no my problem here isn't casting my moral judgment on re7 and re8's view of evelyn i specifically just think that the specific angle they go at with writing evelyn is kind of odd and mostly boring because it's weirdly focused on exonerating every other character who did anything bad. it makes her a boring villain and it sticks out kinda weirdly when resident evil's done a similar plot beat before that i think was a cooler take on it, and re8's additional stuff around her only feels sillier and stupider in ways that again, aren't as fun as the silly stupid poo poo i like out of re

also i'm not sure why you're putting emotionally manipulated in scare quotes that was literally mia's day job. mia's day job was pretending to be a bioweapon mold girl's fake mom cause a bioterrorist organization was paying her a lot of money for it. that's just what the plot is. now how things ended up, that's just proof she was very bad at her job

it was Chris and Piers who wrassled them but yes suplexing a giant spider was one of the greatest feelings ever. re6 ruled especially with co-op

also i know this is the most obvious and lazy criticism of the game but my god is RE7's quality frontloaded hard. like there are a lot of games that gets worse at the end levels but RE7 is maybe one of the starkest ones i've played

re6 also had the thing back when it had online support where you could potentially have other players join in on levels where the campaigns overlapped as the other pair and you'd see them running around doing their own thing while you did yours. this happened maybe twice when I did it but it was a really awesome feature

Because using the term 'emotionally manipulated' holds certain connotations to it that don't really pertain to keeping an emotionally unstable superhuman from killing everyone around them.

I mean, they could've added depth to the character, sure, but that's not really been what the RE series has often been about (I haven't played all of them, just the numbered ones). It's big monsters and evil corporations and bioweapons that are bad. Hell, there's enough tragedy in the Bakers and what happened to them.

i agree that the appeal of resident evil is muscly superhero fighters punching big monsters and evil corporations. that's why i don't really care for the evelyn stuff, it's mostly just sort of weird and not funny or cool. the good parts of resident evil 7 and 8 are when ethan is getting his limbs cut off in comically extreme ways for five minutes while going "gently caress! dammit! ah poo poo"

I keep forgetting about the ship in RE7. I love that game, it's probably my favorite in the series now, but yeah, the ship wasn't great. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it just wasn't as fun as the other areas.

The one thing I'll give to 8 over 7 is that I think Ethan's personality was way better in 8, and by that I mean that he actually had one. There were times in 7 when I'd have been making GBS threads myself in his situation, and he didn't seem to give any sort of a crap. The way he acted and the emotion he showed in 8 was much better, in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure 7 was designed largely with VR in mind, and wanted you to feel more like "you" were the main character, which is why it was first person and Ethan had the personality of a wet paper towel.

Dead weight, just like this post.

That was the neat thing about the Ada campaign being the secret unlockable after you did everybody elses since she's in a lot more levels than you think but she's just way far way helping to snipe dudes most of the time, you'd have to already know she's there to really notice her.

But then the re-release came out and hers is unlocked along with the rest and they gave her a Not Hunk to be her co-op partner since hers was the only campaign to not have it since it did the co-op gimmick levels in all of them.

Notably the person playing Hunk doesn't get her grappling gun so you're literally just there as an extra gun and kung fu partner, you have to wait for player 1 as Ada to grapple and teleport you from place to place.

Yeah they patched the co-op in after the fact because players complained that they had to do it solo

But then all the people who bought it later once it was on sale didn't have that context and just got the lol and lmao of the half assed addition
