I know people like to complain about Vegas but I think it rules that there's a franchise that consistently says "gently caress it" and tries to get the best player on the market every year. I wish more teams would do it.

I dig a bold GM too many of Crosby+Malkin's best years spent with trade deadline conferences full of "the market just wasn't right this year" and first round picks wasted on Derrick Pouliot or Simon Despres caliber players Vegas knows the clock is always ticking, and next year is no goddamned guarantee. Take the swing and you may even end up getting steals like Stephenson for 5th round picks

His injuries were/are legitimately bad injuries - with the back surgeries there was even speculation that his playing career might have been over. What are they supposed to do, say "aww shucks, I guess we won't improve the team or try to replace Stone because that wouldn't be fair to the rest of the league" ?

eh, all of this is just 2 sides playing hardball through the media. We've all seen this before. worst case is they re-sign Guentzel for too much money, big woop he'd be LTIR'd by the end of it anyway with how fragile his shoulders are Fire Sullivan and trade anyone you can over the summer, start fresh and go from there. Honestly, even if the last few years of Crosby's career are him tooling around the rink with his friends, I don't really care that much if anyone had earned a few years of his arbitrary demands getting met it's that guy he's probably got permanent brain damage from his early concussions and he still brought the team 2 more cups afterward

You know how Marchand and Bergeron were not super amazingly skilled but are hall of famers anyway because they're like loving precogs that are somehow always a half step ahead of the play? Hanifin is the opposite. He's big and fast and perpetually a half step behind the play. He always looks good and his teams always somehow underperform when he's on the ice.
