I visited it a few years ago, just to see what's been happening lately, but I also vaguely remember viewing the site a few times around the time of Soundwave 2009. I had my digital camera broken 30 seconds into Alice in Chains' performance at Soundwave, by a guy two rows from the front violently hurling himself backwards right into my camera lense. It was jammed mid-zoom & thus wouldn't let me take any pictures. I was a huge AiC fan in my teens and it was the first time they'd toured Australia since the 1990s, so I was pumped to see them. I had an awesome experience, but if only the guy had broken my camera a the very end of their set :gbsmith:

Still, I managed to get tickets to their Enmore Theatre performance (I think it was a last minute announcement for the Enmore?) a few days later which was phenomenal & a more intimate experience.

not a big fan of the mega-festival format due to a lack of melanin, beer prices and festival people being present. gimme a 5000pax single stage festival on a private farm with BYO any day.

They should bring back a BDO type thing (touring stadium show), but just one arena. The Meredith model, keep everyone together in one place. Saves a bomb on security and stage infrastructure. Split-stage to minimise downtime between sets. 10-15 bands. Preferably all Australian. Your Gangs of youths, Confidence Men, Regimes, etc.

If the private sector can't deliver it for whatever reason then the government should step up and put it on.

So I guess a combo of One Night Stand / Homebake / BDO / Meredith.

All they need to do is sign the cheque to back it, the actual running of it gets outsourced to an event company dummy

This whole 'well if you cant show me a better answer than this, my answer is still the best!' bullshit is loving stupid man cut this poo poo out.

Gang of Youths are Hillsong happy clappers and can gently caress right off.

Smith St Band - cool singer was heaps cool and abused Camp Copes singer and threatened to kill her
John Williamson - absolutely nothing wrong with him except that his demographic starts in triple digit ages
xaiver rudd - complete and utter fuckwit by first hand experience ('this conversation is boring and theres a girl over there i want to gently caress bye')

we have a bunch of festivals that showcase and celebrate australian local talent already. Let them keep doing it, im sure they are well in tune with the various government grants at state/fed levels to get poo poo like this off the ground.

although there is problems with the cop presence being A) required and B) stupidly expensive https://www.smh.com.au/culture/music/music-festivals-may-skip-nsw-amid-police-charges-backlash-20240305-p5fa38.html

Im going to see Minami Deutsch tonight at marrickville bowlo for some japanese kraut rock. it cost me $59, I'll get as close to the stage as I want and I'll probably buy them all a $7 schooner after the gig.

It's not some competition man, relax. You can have fun throwing out a potential line-up if you want, or you can just hang poo poo on things.

Multiple events have gone under this year alone because it's too hard for them to turn a profit. So maybe that's not the best thing to base it on, and the government should step in to fill that gap as a public service, and this format seems a good way to do that, is what I'm saying. I've been out of the game for a while, but those acts are just a step above lorum ipsum in terms of illustrating what it might look like, and I reckon they'd put on a pretty good show that people would enjoy.

I just mean any time someone tells you your idea has obvious holes you get defensive about it. Bike paths is a good example.

Gang of youths haven't been in vogue for a while now. I've seen them live and I would not pay money to see their underwhelming show as part of a festival. They're the kind of band that if seen on a lineup most ppl would actually go "why?"

Cost of living and bands charging huge performance fees to recoup on lower record sales and less margin on merch (venues take a cut, yes, the festivals are and they're among the worst) and cops demanding the festival pay to have them there to gently caress over punters are reasons why. No one can really afford $350 for a ticket to see 5 artists you like over 2 days and there still might be a schedule clash somewhere in there.

Artists absolutely have a right to good money for performances btw. I'm not arguing against that. Stuffing a bill with international headliners is sick until someone has to buy a ticket.

Support your local music scene. It's cheap as hell, the bands are usually fantastic and you get to brag that you saw them play to three people on a Wednesday when they start headlining festivals you can't afford in a few years time.

Small local gigs are great. And so are packed stadiums. If the free market isn't delivering enough of the latter for whatever reason, then the government should. Filling an arena like Giants stadium with 10-15 Australian bands playing back to back seems like the most efficient way to do it. That's the idea, not the specific details of the "line up".
