I would rather james somerton disappear from the internet for any reason, I don't care. if he's actually faking suicide to manipulate people, which at this point absolutely seems like a thing he would do, he needs to gently caress off forever. CW: suicide etc I've known multiple people who killed themselves as well as people whose entire lives were lies built around manipulating, abusing, hurting, stealing from and taking advantage of others, and this gently caress smacks of exactly the second, while using the first as a mere tool in his arsenal to trick people and hurt those he doesn't like. I absolutely do not believe for a second he tried to take his own life, and is only using it to manipulate people.

I thought that was insinuation from a message from a friend of his and not hard evidence that he didn't do anything. regardless, his type is simply not the kind of person who would ever even consider doing that, and his use of it to try to sic a mob on HBG is textbook for that kind and only cheapens the troubles of people who actually need help.

Between that message, his history of lying, and the fact that his channel uploaded a new video, I think it's now reasonable to assume he was lying unless there's clear evidence otherwise.

heres a video on it

tl;dr sex pest guy is really into mecha, makes an extremely mediocre forgettable season 1 that overworks the animators, gets fired for sexpest reasons, gen lock has an actual tv slot and some celebrities in the VA cast so they still go ahead with a S2 but its written by a guy whos never seen a mecha anime in his life and the animation is largely outsourced so it looks like poo poo and barely has any mecha in it and is mostly just bad sex scenes and bizarre cultural commentary that is

theres a scene where the japanese guy on the team watches a mecha anime from his childhood and its presented as the most sexist and evil thing ever thats draped in imperial japan imagery, even though most of the early mecha anime/manga had female pilots alongside the dudes and/or were made by guys who were pretty critical of imperial japan. there's some early sci-fi anime that you could lobby those accusations at but not really in the mecha subgenre.

that bits insanely funny because while i do agree on the most basic premise of "yeah some old mecha stuff could get p sexist or chauvinist at times" its 1) extremely hyper exaggerated in gen:lock to the point where im p sure the in universe protag of the show in gen:lock would be considered insanely evil anywhere else and 2) just what martian successor nadesico does with its own in universe anime but actually more low key and not beating you over the head about how Sexist and Evil old anime is while killing gay guys and showing horrible sex scenes! they did that idea already like 25 years ago!!

yeah nadesico is a much more nuanced and interesting exploration of that idea. like the former actor getting a role again during the uneasy peace but wanting to quit because its a kids show thats blatantly saber rattling. (the enemies in nadesico are Jovians, the in-universe show uses the very clever Jovan)

or stuff like this

also that commentary aside nadesico is a show with characters that actually do stuff and things happen which feels like something rooster teeth struggles to reach

like theres plots that are excuses for action and then a show that seems to be actively straining to contrive a reason for literally anything to happen.

yeah!!! its super cool how the nadesico crew eventually get super into it and want to live up to its ideals vs how the antagonists just twisted it to fit their own agenda, and i really like how akitos bit about the in universe show ends with him going "yeah i thought the final episode sucked but i still got really engrossed in it and i want to believe in it and in the part of me that thinks hot blood is cool" in the final episode... :)
