Gravitas Shortfall posted:idk maybe modern stuff is different but even Evangelion's promos for the next episode had "and there'll be more fanservice!" as if that is what I was watching for. its pretty easy to tell what will/wont have stuff like that but you kinda have to think about like, what something's target demo is and what its vibe is. like that hard drive article is dumb because its using a very generic light novel premise thats clearly aimed at otaku and then going 'but can you believe this has fanservice.'

There are serious issues with how anime producttion, especially in the 90s and 2000s, was heavily underwritten by the whale spending habits of a small number of highly invested perverts. This is in contrast with American media production, which spent most of the 2000s being heavily underwritten by the passive habits of a national population of modestly invested perverts and predatory producers.

He was trying to claim that he didn't just make poo poo up and that he'd taken that 'information' on good faith from a source he trusted

He is playing it normally, except all cars have their speed set to 999999. https://clips.twitch.tv/ColdbloodedCreativeManateeANELE-V1taquY7WzMk5m-E he does not seem to be reuploading the VODs anywhere, so watch'em while you can or archive them yourself. here's the most recent one but there's three others https://twitch.tv/videos/2083527167

Mercury Hat posted:yeah I think "all the cool gays died of AIDS and only the loser boring ones care about marriage" was a unique take from him lol It was a pretty popular talking point on Tumblr, a kind of morphing of legit intercommunity discussion of respectability politics and priorities in activism via the eternal hot take machine until it turned into something totally insane. Being critical of gay marriage as an activism priority, worth discussing! Especially the way focusing on it can push other issues out of the spotlight. That said, a lot of people have forgotten the real material issues wrapped up in marriage such as inheritance rights, power of attorney, the right to visit your dying spouse in the hospital, be in their will, handle their estate, make medical decisions if they are incapacitated, and be on their health insurance. If you think about it for even a minute, it's little wonder why it became a rallying point for a lot of lgbt activists during and after the AIDs epidemic. Acting like prioritizing marriage is purely some invention of 'boring, heteronormative respectability queers' is offensive if you think about it for even a second. We can and should have complex conversations about what to prioritize in activism without that kind of ahistorical slander. Well, we probably can't have that kind of discussion in a social media environment, where nuance goes to die.

and the reality is like most gay people just wanna have a normal life lol you can discuss the idea of marriage being an essential part of a 'normal life' but even pre-aids most of the gay people who died of it were boring accountants who had a 'roommate' that theyd lived with for a decade. most gay people were not the ones rioting or protesting or doing anything shocking. the idea that being gay activates some gene that makes you Uniquely Queer and Powerful is some rocky horror picture show rear end logic. not to mention the idea that 'all the cool queer people were the ones who got aids' is basically just 'aids is punishment for being too gay' reheated and turned around. a ton of the people who died of aids werent even gay.

Still better than British TV in the 60s-80s which was underwritten by the state and was used by a small number of massive perverts to get access to the objects of their perversion while getting paid for it.

on the one hand somerton is only getting back what he put into the world but on the other hand i do feel like the laser-focus on burning him as an effigy is distracting a little from how endemic plagiarism and lazy content theft has been on platforms like youtube and twitch among others. that said i know it's only really happening because he keeps shooting himself in the foot with rancid apology videos.

My favorite James somerton take is that he was super horny for all the people America fought against up until the Korean war, which weirdly enough is when the enemy stopped being other white people. Humana Humana these nazis and soviets are just so hot! Wonder why that is James!
