Bioshock infinite is the stupidest game i've ever played and that fact that people think it says anything even slightly intelligent is the biggest sign that video games are a dead artform.

tbf people thought so at the time because they were desperate for validation but finding that opinion in the wild now is insanely rare. never seen such a huge turnaround on opinion.

i haven't played the game in like a decade but was he a socialist labour leader? like, my memory of it is that he was just the exact same creature as ryan except he was late to the party so he has to cloak his self-interest in revolutionary rhetoric rather than ideological righteousness.

right, but that reflects a pretty dominant Western worldview of the “end of history” era/generation and especially certain dudes- the idea that “socialism sounds really good in theory but actually it’s impossible because people are inherently selfish and greedy and all uprisings inevitably devolve into struggles for wealth and power, etc for entirely self-evident and spontaneous reasons—”

like just because the game buries it behind a million things it cares more about like “making morally ‘complex’ choices” and whatnot doesn’t mean that the game doesn’t have a worldview

Like it’s very obvious between Bioshock 1 and 3 that Ken Levine is a libertarian who “thinks about politics”, with 2 being better purely because he got backseated.

it's been a while since i played that game but i seem to recall after you reach the beach resort and then tell Elizabeth to stop dancing the game just completely goes downhill with ghost wife fight, non-songbird fight, daisy fitzroy's character assassination etc

it felt even more egregious it was yahtzee of all people though. you don't expect the guy who's a hardass towards even the likes of Dishonored to suddenly just dump praise on such a strange and lovely shooter. i remember he appreciated columbia reminding you about being in the sky a lot via skyhooks and man i guess.

Bioshock Infinite was very much a product of its time, that weird brief period from like 2008 to 2016 where people thought racism was "over" because we'd elected a black president. Then the next four years (or really, pretty much everything since then) put the reality of the situation into such stark contrast that it made the shittier parts of Bioshock Infinite's plot really stick out in retrospect.

video games are a valid art form its just gamers are so insecure about roger ebert owning them they latch onto games that tell really lovely stories that try their hardest to be serious movies (last of us 2) or do a surface level analysis of serious subjects (bioshock infinite) and ignore other games actually experimenting with the medium as an art form

No, the "both sides bad" is absolutely still a thing. There's definitely more pushback against it these days because a lot more people have come to realize it's South Park-level bullshit but it hasn't stopped people from telling stories where they try to both-sides a false equivalence.

Columbia was badly lacking in character and depth. Probably in part because the game is such a mess of random ideas and rewrites.

Like man, remember that part in the beginning where they're literally worshiping the founding fathers as deities? That's an interesting idea, oh wait that literally never comes up again after the intro.

Also I can never not mention the Fallout-style theft system that exists in exactly 3 places in the entire game for some reason. Maybe it would've made more sense if the game we got had actually been an immersive sim.

yea. it's all an assembly of various art forms made into a super one from code to design to visuals, "art" hit cabinets in 1978 with Space Invaders and probably before that i unno

Bioshock Infinite has two parts.

Part one is “A liberal is against every war except the current ones. For every social movement except the current ones.” The early sections of the game are smug condemnations of issues settled decades ago. Saying chattel slavery and the massacre of Native Americans is bad in 2013 doesn’t take moral courage but it feels good. This is the parts that probably appealed to many reviewers.

Part two is “Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds.” The game has a psychotic break at the end of the section about how making money by stealing labor is bad. It is justified in game with a portal to a parallel world. The game is now about personally shooting every worker and minority in the face. Anti-materialism is embraced as now ghosts exist. The game ends in a maximalist version of the fascist death drive, killing yourself and every single possible version of yourself.

I did not play the DLC.

Jason Schrier wrote a book that follows the development of Infinite and the game had shuffled through like 3 AAA size staffs before it got out the door. It was rebuilt from the ground up like multiple times.

Gamers are so insanely insecure that the current weird as gently caress controversy is people being mad about a narrative consultancy company that has been in the business for ages because gamers saw an old trailer for Alan Wake 2 featuring a white actress for Saga Anderson and assumed the company made her and every video game character black
