Kinda keep forgetting to fire up the Atari 800XL with all the other vintage hardware I have.

I've got a hobby show set up coming up in the following weekend, and want to display this and the 1040STE. I was able to find out how to get Atari Artist, which came bundled with the Touch Tablet (but not present when I got this Atari 8 bit bundle) working. Not bad for hardware hitting 40 years old.

Listen, I've been around a bit, you know, and I thought I'd seen some creepy things go on in the movie business, but I really have to say this is the most disgusting thing that's ever happened to me.

this is a Key Digitial Digital Magic 12. Yes, KDDH12 where the D is digital twice in a row (and the H is meaningless?), because the year was 2004 and they really wanted you to think this was important so they also printed "DIGITAL PATH" on the bezel.

This is a 1-to-12 component multiplexer with built in scaling as well as an ATSC tuner that I might be able to get 2 channels on badly with a $200 antennae.

That's a couple LZX/eurorack video synthesis modules sitting on top of it. Right now if I have the video rack set to output anything other than NTSC, I can't use my CRT display as a preview monitor, so sometimes I set up patches on a crt, then power everything off, switch to 1080p30, power back on, remix colors now that we're out of composite land, etc and then record.

I am hopeful KD-12 solves half of that, given that I never expect color reproduction on a CRT to look the same as a constructed RGB stream from component outs, but being able to be in 1080p30 (or 720p59 or whatever the hell I'm doing) and also have that work on the various legacy SD things kicking around, would be sweet. The unit appears to only lock to one output mode at a time, but, at least I can have everything wired up this way and then I am only switching the output on this thing over to 1080i before recording. That's the hope, anyway, if it makes my life worse then the main problem will be wasted time, this was like footy five dollats shipped. The video encoder I use was five hundred dollars and also you set video mode with dip switches I'd rather not be flipping 3-4x a day, I don't think they were really made for that kind of use.

quote:

Why you need Digital Magic, Model # KD-DH12

Key Digital engineered Digital Magic (Model # KD-DH12) as a simple, convenient, yet high-quality solution for applications where you have RFInputs that need to be decoded, scaled, and distributed to an array of displays. Digital Magic offers just what the retail outlets, hotels, casinos, and even high-end custom home theater installers are looking for -– a unique "one-stop shopping" solution for applications where you need todecode off-the-air or Cable (RF) ATSC & NTSC, or 480i baseband (YPbPr & CVBS Composite Video) input signals, scale them to your display's nativeresolution, and then distribute them to up to 12 displays.Since it is a Set Top Box that decodes ATSC and NTSC, you can route just ONE RF off-the-air or Cable feed run throughout your facility, and input itdirectly to Digital Magic. Digital Magic then takes over as an ATSC/NTSC decoder, and can even scale the source to match the native resolution ofyour display. For example, Digital Magic can down-convert your 1080i input video to 480i, or up-convert your 480i inputs to 480p, 1080i, or 720p.The high-quality scaler, equipped with Key Digital' advanced, motion-assisted de-interlacing algorithm called "Clear Matrix", lets you up-, down-,and cross-convert the input to your display's native resolution. Digital Magic supports output formats of 1080 interlaced, 720 progressive, and480 interlaced and progressive; 60 Hz output refresh rates; and aspect ratios in and out of 16:9 and 4:3.Digital Magic has 12 discrete Distribution Amplifier (DA) outputs selectable between Component Video (YPbPr) or Composite Video (CV, or "CVBS").All of the outputs will display the same resolution and in the same mode (Composite or Component Video). Digital Magic also handles your audiorequirements, with analog (Left & Right stereo pairs) and digital PCM audio supported at the input, and distributed to the discrete outputs. Youcan literally run just one RF/Cable feed into Digital Magic, and then drive an entire array of displays (up to 12 without the need for an additionalDA). Since Digital Magic has a front-end tuner, you can have multiple programs even on your internal cable network, and feed several Digital Magicunits tuned to their respective channel. For retailer demo room applications, you can readily add channels without the need for additional wiring. And there is no need to route multiple YPbPr cable feeds, except from the very output of the built-in Digital Magic DA to your actual display devices. With its user-friendly On-Screen-Display (OSD), programmable IR remote with "hot" buttons (discrete IR commands are available), and user-selec-table output resolutions and aspect ratios, Digital Magic is easy to control and operate. It is rack-mountable (2RU), has no fan noise, and is easyto install and integrate into your system. The RS-232 port is equipped with discrete command protocol compatible with all control systems (likeCrestron, AMX, CNMSX-PRO), and is even designed to allow customers to upgrade firmware over the Internet.
Can't wait to try to update the firmware on this before opening my own casino! My own casino.... with 12 tvs. Sounds low rent. Running my own "internal cable network" sounds badass though I should look at the minimum pillar of gear I need to do that.

I haven't been able to find an MSRP on this thing but I bet they were five hundred dollars new or something loving stupid back in 2004 at the apex of "Build a HIGH DEF home theater!" moment catching fire. Maybe more, if these were actually sold for industry uses.

this is a somewhat weirder one that's probably going to be more time consuming

It's a reel-to-reel 4-track that is mono only and was advertised as "mono, twice the recording length!" leading me to believe that the resulting recordings can probably only be played on this specific device without a bunch of post processing or other effort.

I have a small stack of mostly stuff my dad recorded with his friends in the 70s that doesn't exist in any other format.

The thing powers up briefly and then dies, no matter what you try to make it do, so that's problem one. I haven't taken it apart further than this to look for cracked caps or other obvious problems.

When it does power on, the reverse fully engages. Forward doesn't, but it tries to and watching it, I think that can be fixed by replacing a bunch of the retaining springs that have lost their sproing. The electrical stuff is more mysterious to me and I may try to rope in a friend before wasting time confusing myself with a meter.

Futzing with the play/record button makes the speaker crackle; there's also a 1/4" output on the back. Full restoration would be cool, but getting blank media looks unfun (I pretty much max out at spending $4-8 a pop on sealed Maxell XL II Gold cassettes when it comes to trying to source ancient blank tape), so if I can just restore it well enough to be able to play back this pile of reels and record it all that would be cool.

For very basic recorders like that, don't bother getting brand new tapes. You won't get the best quality out of them anyway.
If it completely dies, there's a wonky contact in the entire mains related circuit. Can be the switch, can be the cord itself (usually breaks near the plug or the strain relief in the machine). Occasionally the fuse holder has gotten crusty.
The springs are rarely the problem. The issue is the hardening of the running surfaces of the rubber parts causing less friction between tape and rollers, and between the drive wheels, as well as hardened grease in sliding or moving parts that excert the force from the play button to the pinch roller for instance. All moving parts need to move in a snappy way - the opposite of nicely smooth opening cassette doors.
If after following the procedure below you still don't have enough friction, you can try more spring tension on the pinch roller that pushes the tape against the capstan, but that comes with the risk of wow/flutter/the tape being pushed away from the capstan.

For all Sony recorders with lots of rubber wheels, the way to start is to by:
- Removing all the rubber parts
- Getting a deep dish with really hot water and dish soap
- Once the water has cooled to a human-tolerated tempearture, vigorously scrub all the rubber parts, especially the running surfaces, with a sponge.

Then rinse well with water with relatively low mineral content, and let dry completely. Use demineralized water if your local tap water has a lot of calcium.

Now clean all the bearing surfaces and shafts that you pulled the rubber parts off of with something like naphta or WD40.

Lubricate the bronze bushings generously with THIN oil such as sewing machine oil, let soak, clean away all excess and residue that might pick up dust.
Try and get some into the motor bearings too, though don't drown the motor in lube!

Use naptha or WD40 to free up and clean sliding parts and relubricate with something like white lithium grease or moly grease. Binding sliding parts may be the reason why things don't press hard enough against each other. You don't always have to completely disassemble all the moving parts. Usually once they get moving and it has new grease,

Finally, clean the entire tape path (heads, capstan, tape guides) with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, using cotton swabs or strips of cloth.

Now it's ready to be tested! If it runs smoothly, you can proceed to clean electric contacts and potentiometers with isopropyl alcohol. If that's not enough, use a contact cleaner, but use it sparingly. Never use contact cleaner for mains switches.
