the stake that i would change is the one that takes away the small blind rewards. Not because it's imbalanced or anything, it's just the biggest thing responsible for the run restart spam, at least for me.

If I have no reason at all to play the very first blind of the game, there's no reason to not reset until I get a nice reward for skipping. If you got the usual few bucks for the first blind, you're at least more inclined to play it out a bit and see if something pops in the first couple shops.

Yeah that one is pretty not fun. I would have that one run like normal but increase the blinds a bit starting ante 2.

Another good way to add a chip level would be to make you face multiple boss blinds. Or even at the higher levels have combo boss blinds. You’d have to curate that so it isn’t like two impossible ones, but you could have every 7th card face down AND debuff clubs, or whatever.

Yeah it basically forces you to restart your run if you have bad skips but it isn't all that bad later on once you gain a bunch of interest from each round.

I'm OK with the small blind rewards going away, it makes skip decisions more interesting. Small blinds are often easier than the bosses immediately preceding them and I appreciate that the game makes you consider if you really need that softball round. Relentless scaling is a big hallmark of Balatro and I think it's good that it encourages you to jam the accelerator down while still allowing for a little grace if you desperately need it.

It does make the first round pretty lame, but most decks do fine in ante 1 anyhow and those that aren't either have the slingshot capability to make up for it or have bigger problems that the small blind reward isn't going to fix.

I do think it's a little weird that it's the very first difficulty bump; it's easier than most of the difficulty modifiers but I really think eternal jokers should have been red chip, they feel a lot more basic and integral to the balance.

I still play the no-reward ante 1 small blind pretty often. $2-3 can be pretty important ante 1.

I generally feel like red and black should have been switched, with how much comparative difficulty they add.

I haven't tried Blue yet, but it certainly looks like a step up from the other modifiers.

Yeah, it's not worthless. If the big blind has a good skip and the small blind doesn't I'll often do the small blind; if I know I'm going to get a cash infusion from the big blind skip then I can grab anything good from the first shop, and if there's a special joker tag then I'll want a couple extra bucks to make sure I can afford it after the boss blind.

I'm not sure exactly how often you ought to take it, but it's enough that ante 1 doesn't feel as monotonous as I thought it might be at first.

This, because the eternal cards can have interesting usecases that switch up the gameplay. Madness etc.

The small blind-thing is just a boring "you get less choices now lol"-debuff that makes the game less interesting. Well, I guess it does introduce some different value judgements (is a bad tag on small blind better than the $1-3 or something you might get from it?), but still, I'd prefer it to at least be up in the stake list.

I don't get how the spectral card that destroys a random joker to create a copy of a joker works. I thought I'd big brain it by selling all but one non-eternal joker, so then that would be the one that got copied, but it gave me a copy of something I didn't even have. I was already on ante 9 gold stake so I just laughed but I still don't know wtf happened there

Anyway, first gold stake down. Checkered. 5 of the last 6 non-boss blinds just skipped because I had Throwback and there was no real significant potential to increase my power that much if I fought them normally. Turned out okay. By the end I was praying my 5 card hand due to Stuntman would only be spades. Also, apparently Blackboard procs regardless if your hand is empty when you play it, which was nice because that would've hosed me if I needed to still be holding a spade or club for each played hand to proc it.

it copies one joker and destroys the rest, and should leave you with two of the same joker and nothing else (not counting eternal jokers)

i have no idea how you ended up with something you didn't have to begin with

That should be how it works, was it actually the card that gives you a rare joker and takes all your money?

Nope, was definitely the one that destroyed a Joker and claims to create a copy. I sold off my Stuntman and one other, and the only non-eternal I had left was a Blackboard. I took the spectral card, it destroyed my Blackboard, and gave me the Joker that gives +mult for pairs, which is not a Joker I had at the time. I was confused but it was really funny.

I guess it figures that after badmouthing Green Joker/Supernova I'd have a gold stake win with them. Triple polychrome may have helped a little, granted. The 5th joker was Hallucination, which helped generate money tarots to buy more celestial packs to feed Constellation and also let me repeatedly dupe a holo stone cards that I got in an early playing card pack.

Really starting to feel the complaints about the constant restarts in a way that I hadn't been before. My playstyle always leaned towards decks with some sort of built in reliability, so I never felt particularly obligated to compulsively restart. But gold stake ante 1 with a deck that has zero starting advantages at all is a special kind of hell, although anaglyph seems reasonably strong overall in the long run. It definitely took me less playtime to get gold on anaglyph than erratic, but part of that is most of my failed runs died immediately whereas erratic can easily limp along to ante 5+ and then hit the wall.

Got my first win last night :toot: (after many runs of bashing my head against a brick wall)! Got The Window as my first boss, went "right well after this I need to specialise into diamonds because I (presumably) won't be getting this boss again", the DNA Joker let me get lots of copies of things like the Ace and Jack of Diamonds (at the cost of a few tight rounds where I only just squeaked the number of chips I needed to beat the blind), and then things like this started happening (which generated 55,330 chips). I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it's good to finally get that first win.

As well as the aforementioned DNA Joker (with support from the Hanging Chad Joker helping to make the most of those single-card hands) and the obvious power of the Scholar and Greedy Joker for this particular run, shout outs to Hiker and Constellation for giving me the staying power to cope with the increasingly nasty blinds. Although I eventually lost to the small blind in Ante 10 - those post-game numbers get nasty huh.
