In 2020, The Chosun Ilbo reported that the adolescent Kim had been the victim of domestic violence at the hands of his father; in February 2002, after threatening his family with a gun, Kim's father was shot to death in his attic by police. Quite an origin story.

The sawstop talk is actually interesting and relevant, but I will comment that these articles are from another decade entirely. Much hubbub about some local laws that never passed? I read the article (and the linked thread which doesn't talk much about it) and it doesn't seem too condemning? The 'prohibitive costs' are quoted for the bottom of the barrel cheapest saws possible, and it's no big surprise as a layman to hear that any any additional feature (safety or otherwise) can easily double the price of crap, rather than a ~10-30% increase for more premium models. The entire thing seems reminiscent of that historic factoid of a horse whip manufacturer suing automobile companies for driving him out of business; stuff is playing out in US courts over what's just ill-mannered corporate poo poo-flinging. Sawstops are available in NZ, quietly and without drama, for a price.

That we didn't require it as a safety feature a la seatbelts when it was first invented was a colossal failure of government, imo it would gently caress over the market for $85 jobsite table saws but, honestly, good

I don't really get how an 8% rake on the wholesale price could increase the cost of table saws by $100 before counting the actual hardware changes. The math on that doesn't add up unless the wholesale price is already over a thousand bucks.

I don't mean to say their stuff is bad, far from it, but they're not the company they were where everything they made was great. All of their power tools are fine, but I really only see people describe their routers, and jigsaw blades, as great. Everything else if fine to good, so they don't really distinguish themselves from anything from Dewalt/Milwaukee/Makita/Metabo/etc.

They are entitled to the percentage they currently maintain!

Everything else if fine to good, so they don't really distinguish themselves from anything from Dewalt/Milwaukee/Makita/Metabo/etc. The Bosch TL Systems bottle filler I worked on was rumored to be a floor model and goddamn was that thing ever a lemon, I preferred the two mechanical TL Systems fillers from the late 70's. The first thing that happened after installation, 5 years before i got there, was the automatic fill checker came broken - and it never became cost- effective to fix it vs. making us pull 8 vials in a row and do manual fill checks every 5-30 minutes depending on the product. I worked with a Bosch tech that got flown out here from Jolly Old Deutschland on Thanksgiving eve one time. He confirmed that Bosch totally knew they sold that company a lemon, but they were gonna machine delrin change parts locally as part of the service contract so Bosch didn't give a poo poo. He also responded to my query of, "how much are you getting paid to do this little 48 hour trip?" with, in a heavy German accent, "you would not like to know the answer to that because I don't do what you do; but it's a lot." We were there until 9AM on Thanksgiving and that dude was happier than a pig in poo poo cuz he was getting holiday pay for a holiday he didn't give a flying gently caress about after being overnighted. ATG too, the guys that certed the HEPAs once a year. They'd just walk through the plant with some equipment and test every filter. We had to decom the cleanrooms because they weren't gown certified with us with signatures on file with the requisite regulatory agencies, but I still had to do a 30 minute gown training every time I saw the same two guys and then escort them and write a report about their aseptic technique. I asked those guys how much they make doing that poo poo, and they straight up told me, "$350k to do this about 8-10 times a year unless something goes bad at a plant you service, which means you're also always on call to hop a plane. More like 15-20." Those guys said it was a finger-count for everyone that did it as to how many times they were getting wasted or having dinner with their family and got a email with a ticket and a txt telling them to pack their bags and get their rear end to the terminal at PHX ASAP.
