Like I theorized earlier I think the cutoff is that it's ok for them to emasculate liberals but that's the limit. The second you start to claim you can hunt, shoot, and fight better than conservative cis men you're done.

I think the thing is that they have to maintain feminine beauty standards while being tomboys re: hunting, fishing, chugging nattie ice etc. just so happens that those venn diagrams don't have that much crossover, so folks like that twitter personality up thread get boosted and adored by the right as long as they can toe the line between redneck and fuckable. As a child in the 90's, the media had taken the concept of tomboys and kinda rolled it into the whole "girl power" brand, so that speculation on someone's sexuality was naturally left out. A lot of shows I watched had "hey, girls can be into sports too!!" special episodes where everyone learns a valuable lesson about sexism, and that was the only time I ever heard the term "tomboy" used.

Yeah, your mileage may vary, but I grew up in northeast Oklahoma as a kid in the 70s and I knew some tomboys that were simply just girls that liked to do boy stuff. Things like handle snakes and worms and frogs, and some of them could hit a baseball pretty good. Some great tree climbers too. And nobody thought anything was weird about any of this, because we were all kids. Some of them may have grown up to be lesbians, I don’t know. Probably some did grow up to be bigots, which wouldn’t be surprising due to the political makeup of the state. I doubt all of them did.

There were four students at a girls' boarding school: the chubby one (Natalie), the black one (Tootie), the princess (Blair), and the tomboy (Jo). Jo was the foil to spoiled, snooty princess Blair. She had a working class background, and grew up helping her dad (Alex Rocco, aka Moe Green from The Godfather) in his auto shop.

I think not eating red meat puts you out of the 'tomboy' sphere. There's also an aspect I've noted, in the context of transphobia, that being a tomboy is acceptable for a girl/young woman but at some point it's assumed they'll 'grow up' and act what conservatives consider to be a normal cis woman. After all, they certainly wouldn't consider a woman a 'tomboy' if she worked at a lumber yard while her nonbinary domestic partner stayed at home as a full time parent. It gets defined narrowly and inconsistently. Like what is even a “tomboy” anymore, when more and more American women (especially millennials and Gen Z) do things like play sports and work out, wear pants for everyday outfits and only wear dresses on formal occasions, etc? Even that Southern farmer girl that has the chuds in a fit just seems like, I don’t know, a normal Southern girl who knows how to do the kind of things you do on a farm?
