Doubt it. The inaccessible areas in central Australia, the Congo and the Amazon were historically, and still are inhabited by tribes.

Also the big effort made for trade lanes and islands shouts "early modern period" to me.

e. St Pierre and Miquelon are surrounded by three or four different sea locations. That only makes sense for EUV.

I wonder what the point is in having the sea lanes set up in that brickwork pattern is, as opposed to it just being a single-width chain of individual provinces. Part of me wants to imagine that the way they'll implement it being faster in one direction than another is by letting you sail in a straight line in one direction but forcing you to tack into the wind by zig-zagging if you try to sail in the opposite direction.. That feels kinda crazy but I want it to be true.

God just the presence of passageways and sea lanes already has me super hyped for this. If currents/winds affect colony distance it could be set up so that North America isn't really in colonial range of Europe until around 1600. We should actually see semi-historical colonisation patterns!

You have a Powerful Mage with Legendary Enchantment as your starting ruler. The trick with Mulen is to crush Zokka and Jaddar pretty much out the gate by using Dominate Garrison to insta cap their capital and ya know, use war wizard generalship whole also picking favorable fights.

I just can't do it, I can take Zokka but Jadd is too much - I can take about half of their lands including cap, but inevitably Jaddar catches up with me with their ruler general from out of LOS, who is disgustingly speedy and just crushes me. There aren't really even a lot a of mercs to use either, just 2 crappy bands.

This is already microing everything on speed 2 while using up all of my manpower and available mercs.

I'm hoping to do it now after catching up on tech and with the initial ruler gone - I managed to get another powerful mage ruler and they are only about +50% on development on me now. Also I have 2 loyal vassals to help.

e: The current situation, though keeping in mind this is restart 6 or something like that:

TL;DR: Basically I can't win a 1-on-1 battle against their initial ruler general with my war wizard without having about 2:1 in troops or so. If it's closer then they inevitably crush me on morale before I can kill them and with all their cav it's a stackwipe (it's also a stackwipe if I win to be fair).

To be honest I might be able to outblob him by conquering the forbidden plains, but that seems to be entirely against the mission tree.

e2: Maybe a better screenshot with the UI (I am building another 10k army):

e3: Did end up winning afterwards, also found out that yes, Jaher with a cav army is faster than a war mage with a harpy army. Zokka is easier because gnoll armies suck.

I really don't see it being reasonably possible without expanding north to be honest. Maybe on a previous patch, but dealing with the sun elves is really brutal right now.

Also it's really, really not a tall playthrough. You might get to do some development eventually but having to conquer all of Bulwar first is kind of quintessentially not tall. I'm already #6 world power in 1476 and am nowhere near done with it, also like 3 admin techs behind because of all the coring involved.

I tried out Mulen and my bigger problem was financial rather than military, tbh. Your economy is terrible and you need a big lump of cash to repair the golden highway, which some of the early missions are gated behind. If you pull off a good start the bad economy had me chronically short of admin from all the coring. Its a hard MT for sure.

I mostly lived off of peace treaties and estate land sales. Still not sure how I'll afford fixing the golden road but I figure it can wait until demonsterisation, at which point I expect to be about the same territory as your average centaur horde playthrough.

Still not a tall tag by any means.

I went for a limited victory in the first war - with the 50% you can take, peace out early, take the Jadd harpy ally provinces (if you declared- if they did, declare your own war for it after coring what you take off Jadd and take more cash off them via blitzing the capital and other provinces) and cash and whatever land you can off Jadd after sieging half their provinces, build a fort on the Siaden roost and the Jadd harpies roost, and you'll have 3 harpy roosts to bleed the Jadd armies on next time round as well as nudging them towards an economic spiral. Elven military is nasty when it comes to manpower and replenishment - play to their weakness. You'll also get some breathing room to catch up on tech to be less behind.

I just avoid Jaddar until he dies or I can leverage 3-1 odds if at all possible - carpet sieging the western end of the Jadd with 1-2k stacks can fry the ai into running up and down the desert, which is somewhat cheesy but having uber mobile armies everywhere fits harpies rather well, and early game Jadd has no forts.

The fight with Jadd was annoying enough is that I decided to declare on them in a final save in my previous playthrough after unifying EoA (not an optimised playthrough or anything, I was playing Arbaran and just sortof fell into it).

Come deal with this you elven prick.

e: Upon reconsideration of endgame wars frustration I loaded a save slightly prior to that and had the vassals do it instead, but it doesn't look as impressive. Did completely demolish them though. That's what they get for being annoying in an alternate dimension. And they were friendly to me and we had no wars or anything in the past too

Apologies for another screenshot from my Mulen playthrough, but whoever came up with the idea that it's a tall nation (possibly the dev/writer) is on some good stuff:

I'm just a smol guy playing a tall mission tree, honest. Ignore the 80 thousand harpies in my army for a sec.

IIRC the "tall" part of Mulen comes from the ridiculous devcost bonuses they get for their roosts. They basically turn into outdoors dwarf holds. But yeah, it takes a while to get there and you have to go wide first just because of how placing roosts works.

No, I had fun making Pirate Japan some patches ago. Your coastal raids give you enough cash to afford the most powerful navy in Japan and mercs above force limit, which is good enough to give you an edge over most other daimyos and their allies. Find a weak spot and take over some of the others and build a base strong enough to challenge the Shogun. Tip: Concentrate on taking over one of the smaller islands in Japan proper first, then you can be clever and block off straits at will to trap armies etc. when fighting the other guys.

Be aware that as a republic you cannot usurp the Shogunate, only destroy it; and forming Japan as a pirate republic will just create pirate republic Japan. (You can get out of being a pirate by taking the Mandate of Heaven though. But tall colonial pirate Japan is a pretty fun game.) Also like any daimyo you cannot really expand outside of Japan until the Shogunate is taken down, except by colonizing (which will at least give you better raiding range; but you might well be able to take Kyoto before you even unlock any idea groups).

To be completely fair I don't think there is another way to survive in the region without basically conquering all of Jadd and their usual conquests and breaking up the centaurs, as the tree has you do, so I don't think a tall start would really be viable.

It's just that doing so makes you a power that can rival Command, which is about as far from tall as you can get.

e: For non-Anbennar folks you basically start sandwiched between initial Arab conquests, Mongols about to unify under Genghis Khan and Sengoku Japan except it's India and they consider you an outsider primitive tribe.

Will actual population numbers mean the wars where you kill a million Frenchmen over and over again actually have an impact?

I'm torn a bit on this. Having population makes things like religious/cultural conversion much more granular and sensical, and allows simulation of things that were abstracted in EU4 like the growth of cities or migrations. On the other hand, I'm not sure that I want EU5 to feel too much like Victoria. I don't want it to be too much of a pop management game.

Trying to work out the date from these borders. Not clear if these are national borders or what sort of internal divisions are being broken out as vassals, but we have a balkanised Persia, a China that does not include Yunnan, and a strong hegemon in India that could be a Tughlaq Delhi. This would seem to point to somewhere between 1368 and 1370.

88m is also a plausible population for early Ming.

Don't think they could've sold this new game better to me, given that the very first things shown were like my core complaints about EU4 - annoying enough for me to make and publish a mod for one of them, while endlessly complaining about the other.

Definitely hoping that the new sea lane thing means they've at least half-way solved the issue with the projection not just being a visual distortion, since over-seas distances were definitely the bigger issue there.

Aside from that, I just hope population growth is highly dynamic and varied, as some countries basically didn't grow during the entire period, while others had their population increase five-fold or more.
