Welp, Modern Val knows where the stone is, so it's only a matter of time before Witgar dies and Val gets his sword back.

Chicken Parmigiana posted:This is a good gag and made me smile. Mister Olympus posted:the less comprehensible, the better, i say. love that window into a completely unrecognizable past catlord posted:I deeply appreciate Hippocrass's historical comics post, but I have to admit that the only ones I consistently read are Polly and her Pals and The Gumps, plus occasionally Gasoline Alley when it seems more comprehensible to someone like me who knows jack poo poo about cars. Which, thinking about it, are the ones that don't have too much eye dialect in them, plus aren't the most densely packed compared to some others. Chicken Parmigiana posted:Oh, same, to be clear! I think there's value in it and I'm glad that stuff gets posted. It's just 'not for me', most of the time. Occasionally I'm in the right mindset and have the time to slow down and take some of it in. It's interesting, at the very least. Honestly, part of the draw to the older comics is just exploring the history and development of the comic strip. There's definitely a different feel to them compared to more recent strips.

yeah i really enjoyed that back when dippy duck was just starting out in 1906 or whenever and nobody loves a fat man was happening. watching people figure out in real-time which way word bubbles should be ordered was super fascinating

I'm kind of fascinated by the Herriman strips and the clear evolution from sort of staid sitcom-y premises to the eventual weirdness of Krazy Kat

It's also neat learning how comic strips start influencing the world outside of the newspaper. Krazy Kat being the first comic strip to have merchandise, The Gumps more or less kickstarting radio programs, starting the trend of comic strip characters running for president, and turning Sidney Smith into the first millionaire cartoonist, McCay's attempts to turn Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend into a movie franchise. A lot of the commercialism around comics and cartoons was basically there from the beginning.

Oh no the consequences of my actions. Kind of funny to see Josh get extra characterization after he's been made his most detestable. A few months ago he'd just smile and rationalize it as serving the company.

I assume Mr. X is a reference to the MX missile, which was pretty controversial in the early 80s.I AM GRANDO posted:I wonder if Mr.X can change his size because Jeff Smith realized his drawings were inconsistent between the first two strips. It might also be because the MX program, in the way of most Pentagon weapons programs, kept getting more and more expensive and complicated as it went on.
