seriously, wtf
Dice Legacy is definitely a colony builder dice allocator, one of the better roguelike-ish offerings on console, though I've only played it a few hours.

Tharsis was the first game I saw with an allocation mechanic years ago, and is worth checking out if you haven't. Though I wouldn't say it has a ton of replayability beyond the difficulty progression.

Citizen Sleeper looks interesting, though I haven't played it myself yet. Seems to be a bit more story focused and on the rpg/adventure side of the genre spectrum. Looks like there's a sequel in the works as well.

Citizen Sleeper is loving incredible; the first ending I got straight up made me burst into tears. The writing in that game throws some real haymakers.

It's not really a roguelike in the sense you'd expect if someone offered it as a roguelike rec, but if you like writing-focused RPGs, you'll probably love Citizen Sleeper irrespective of your roguelike tastes.

I could not argue more strongly against Citizen Sleeper: It was a 'choices matter' game when I bought it before that descriptor got quickly scrubbed. Its a narrative game where your character has no effect on anything; other characters lead the protagonist around by the nose and every dialogue choice results in the same outcome. Stanley Parable had something to say about ludonarritive freedom/limitations, but this game doesn't even try. An example off of the top of my head: a bounty hunter will come for you, and none of your choices can evade him. He enslaves you for amusement, and in a drunken stupor loses his gun to you in a bar that he's in the process of getting kicked out of. With gun in hand, you can... hand it back to him, or pull the trigger. Both lead the same place (it was unloaded), which is the protagonist taking no umbrage to the very literal slavery. This drunkard will call you up a few days later asking for a favor, and you have no choice but to help him. Not because the protagonist has any reason to, but because that's how it's lazily written.

During the majority of conversation prompts, you get 3-4 dialogue options on how to proceed, but for most of them the other characters give no indication of having heard you as they'll spout the same lines regardless. This can be tested by reloading the game. This is a common thread; irritating characters have storylines where your only input is to park their quests and ignore them (or not), eventually picking which of three of four of them result in game over screen to your taste.

tl;dr: it's a writing game with terrible writing.

It also really doesn't loving belong in this thread, as it's very much a once-and-done thing.

I enjoyed my time with it but also found quite shallow. The system is inspired by a tabletop RPG but it is not well balanced at all. It broke way too easily, I could do anything I wanted without constraint after the first fifth of the game. I do not recommend playing it if you have a system oriented brain and are looking for an interesting system to tinker with.
I loved the soundtrack though.

idk, I thought it had a really interesting setting, some great characters, and some very powerful story beats. The mechanical end of things wasn't terribly complex but that's not really what the game is primarily about anyway. Agree to disagree I guess.

Except on the bounty hunter storyline, you're dead right about that specific arc being absolute horseshit lmao

Is Backpack Battles the one with a demonic furry called “Furcifer”?

I think I saw a friend playing it. The idea of such a game using async PVP was really clever, but somehow this is the thing that I remember most clearly.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it too. I just viewed it as a visual novel with some small choices with the main draw being the story/world.

Looking forward to Citizen Sleeper 2

It's 2006. I am taking 276 yeti furs from the goodies hoard.
New expansion made me pick up Necromancer again for the first time in many years and man it's a good game even though I suck at it. It's really good at giving me just one too many things to process under the time/beat pressure so I gently caress up. Never fully overwhelming but it's always "I was focusing on dodging the dragon breath and hitting the shield wielding skeleton from the side and forgot that my broadsword would cause me to attack the diagonally adjacent enemy instead of move, so I died"

it is crippling, the only solution is to just go all in on retaliation and make enemies immediately die when they attack you. even then it still requires super good equipment and avoiding enemies that can outlast you

A summoner pure ice build with geistform worked out for me. Once you find the bird head it gets really silly. The ice creature and djinn from your starting weapon work well enough as bodyguards early game until you can start just freezing the whole map in your first turn.
