Anyone ever go to the Players? Any advice?

Driving down tomorrow to catch the Thursday round. Probably going to follow the Hovland, McIlroy, Spieth group at 835 off 10 through 18 then shop and camp out at 17 for the rest of the day.

Followed up my 50 last week on PGA National with a 35 on the front 9 of a local Pete Dye course (UofM Radrick Farms). Golf is dumb.

yeah i gotta go back to the sim today to play a course called Druids Glen, and then Pebble's back 9 with high wind. Druids Glen is narrow fairways and trees with lots of water, last time i shot an even 60, im gonna try to lower that to a 55, or a 50. i gotta find a way to download the one video of a shot i took that sliced right into the trees, onto the cartpath, it rolled down the cart path and across a bridge and onto the middle of the fairway... my 2nd shot went OB left, and my 3rd shot went into the water, so i triple bogey'd a hole i should have honestly par'd because golf is hard.

I'm really struggling to find out what to do to get that face square at impact, because it's almost always open enough to either go right, or my path's out to in enough with just enough of the face open that i get 1500rpm of right spin when the ball rolls off the face so it starts out pretty okay and then still ends up 30+ yards right because it's an un-intentionally blocked shot. causing some mental strife lol.

Edit: if you're in michigan and ever need a 4th to make fun of, i'd love to join you when the season is in full swing. and if you ever wanna come join me at this sim place, i'll foot the bill, it's just a hike from the metro area up to Lake Orion.

So the forge tecs arrived.

New Hotness

Lazy man weighing (standing on the scale while holding all the clubs) shows that the forge tecs weigh about the same as my old ones, despite graphite shafts on the olds vs steel on the forge tecs.

I had a chance to take them down to the driving range and... wow. I'm not sure if its just that my swing was good (or perhaps more accurately - recovered) from how utterly awful I was last time I actually played on a course but the forge tecs felt good and cooperative from the first swing. Nice obvious gapping between most clubs and pretty effortless ball height. I guess even in the case of irons; 20 years of tech does make a bit of a difference. Shot distance was pretty darn consistent unless I absolutely flubbed it. A bit of lateral spread in the shots (of course) but I FEEL like I can understand why a given shot ends up where it does and can work on that. I've never been good enough to deliberately shape an iron shot, but I feel like with these irons I might actually be able to get there.

Pretty much the only iffy one was the 4 iron. Not that it was bad, it was just relatively difficult to use. I may be somewhat biased though because by apparent coincidence I seemed to "get" my 4 hybrid and whip that around in a way I never have before so the 4 hybrid will stay in the bag, and the 4 iron will go under my bed for burglars for now.

I bought these as a birthday present to myself and so far the look, feel and results are all positive. Looking forward to actually taking them on course in the next few days and shattering my confidence when I banana everything. Happy birthday to meeeee. :toot:

I’ve got the 2020 Forged Tec (One length - I think I’m the only one left here?) and they’re absolutely gorgeous. I love them. I plan on rocking them for 10 years.

Congrats man - Cobra makes tremendously underrated irons.

I'm pretty happy with the state of my bag right now.

Only thing I'd change might be an upgrade on the putter to an oddessy or scotty cameron just for the hell of it. OTOH maybe not and I'll give my dad's old 2-ball another try since my re-think about putting and I've ordered a couple of mallet and blade putter headcovers off temu.

I definitely want a clicgear model 4 push cart for it though:

http://www.clicgear.com/pushcarts/model-4/index.php

The cart I have is functional, but quite long in the tooth and a bit wobbly so its due for retirement.

Definitely. I live in western Ann Arbor, but I grew up near Pontiac and know how hard it is to get anywhere up there. I can also get us into the UofM golf course for staff rates ($79/cart on weekends) if you'd like to give that a go. https://umgolfcourse.umich.edu/

that would be sick, ill shoot you a PM and we'll talk for sure. I need more local golf friends, all of mine live up in Rochester Hills/Oxford etc etc.

Warren Valley near me had a black friday deal last year that was unlimited golf/cart for 1500 bucks, and i was tempted because they rehabbed the west course i think, and they'll have 36 holes going hopefully this year.

Edit: So apparently this is something i should have known because it felt so weird to me... I wasn't firing my hips well or at a good time, and i was moving my arms first and they'd get in front of my hips... and when i'd get my hips moving the right way i felt like the rest of my body was so far behind i couldn't catch up and i was all over the place and had zero control over myself.

Apparently that's NOT the case, feeling like i'm a wet noodle and getting a hip motion forward first in my down swing just works and i'll put zero effort into a swing and my 9i will go 110 yards dead straight if i'm doing it right. I'm a slow swinger for a dude who's 6'3" because i'm also a big boi chubbo, but also because WELP i'm not sequencing right. Still also having club release problems so my shots still will go from dead straight if everything is good, to so far right my shots make Donald Trump look like a socialist. Learning is fun, golf is hard, my back is sore.

Met my friend (who works for NBC) for breakfast near the course, then went inside around 8.

Got a Bloody Mary, made our way to 12 to catch up with Rory’s group which had an insane crowd all day. Followed them and the groups ahead of and behind them until around noon when my friend had to go to a meeting with the PGA.

After that I ate some lunch, and hung out around the Sawgrass Square near the clubhouse, then went to One to follow Scheffler, Fowler and Thomas (along with half the gallery LOL). Got to see Nicklaus and got a few pictures of him. Jacks looking old, but in good health and had a great smile going.

Followed that group along with Matsuyama, Homa and Fitzpatrick all the way to the 7th. Had to do some serious bouncing around to get some good spots on a tee or green but it was cool.

At one point I’m walking down 5 along the rope line, completely alone, no one within 50 yards of me (they were all with the Fowler group) and I’m just casually walking to 5 green drinking my beer and I sensed someone next to me and it was Hideki and Max. Said hi and good luck and great tee shots and they thanked me, got a quick fist bump from them and went on my way. That was fun and surreal as hell.

Another cool moment was standing at 18 tee when Rory dunked his tee shot in the water. Got to listen up close to all 3 of them talking about where it crossed and if he should re-tee or drop etc. Was neat to hear the conversation. I did not see in person what happened on 7 but that turned out to be nothing major anyway.

After that I watched 4 or 5 groups come through 7, then I went and sat on the hill at 17 until around 6 when the Fowler group finished up and went back to my hotel.

All in all, if you haven’t gone there do it. Phenomenal course and amenities. As nice as Augusta. It’s enormous too, biggest layout I’ve ever seen. I walked the entire course once fully and bounced around a lot and that was 12 miles for the day.

I missed the Ryan Fox ace because I was elsewhere.

I have a soft spot for Warren valley, it’s where I learned to play. I lived like 2 miles away (beech daly and joy) before I moved to Ann Arbor. I’ve only played it once since the rehab, but it was still very soft and growing in. Hoping to get out there this season and see how it is.

The 4K broadcast today looks phenomenal.

Dad’s 70th is early next month and I considered a trip to Sawgrass but $8-900 tee time is a bit outta my range even though it’d probably still look like it does this weekend.

What about packages where you stay onsite and get to play Stadium and Dye?

My friend and I were talking about it yesterday but I didn’t get around to looking at prices.

Edit: OOOOF, I just looked up that pricing and yeah. $880pp for a single round, $1471pp for 2 rounds. It’s a great course and would be awesome to play but that’s an insane price.

Your action is generally pretty good, but your swing is very upright which doesn’t allow you to generate power rotationally. In other words, you’re chopping wood and we want to get you closer to throwing a discus.

First thing is more flex in your knees. Imagine you’re a shortstop, ready to leap left or right depending on where the batter hits the ball. You’re going to feel like you’re squatting but you won’t be.

Second thing is to get the plane of your swing less upright. Again the baseball metaphor is useful. You can practice swinging the club above the ground at home (even pretending you’re playing tee ball may be useful), and on the range you can hit some balls from your knees—it will feel silly but I actually want you to try to hit the ball from a kneeling position. We want you swinging around your body instead of straight up/straight down.

It will likely be tough sledding at first because the timing to match up your face angle and swing path will be different, but this will improve the consistency of your impact (I’m guessing you struggle with chunking and thinning in general but especially in the short game) and you’ll hit the ball much farther.

Plz no critiquing my club face, i'm working on that too.
Your action is much improved from last year but I don’t know why this instructor told you to poo poo your pants less. My guess is he decided to change your posture to better match your upright swing plane, which is a quicker “fix” but not the right long term solution. You actually want your old posture, just not your old swing.

I thought Brian Harman's hat was a joke or meme or something but nope, MegaCorp is a real company lol. Kis is doing a really good job on the commentary IMO which isn't surprising since he's always been great when I've seen him on the various golf youtube channels etc.

My home course was open for a few days this week with unseasonably warm and dry conditions so I got out and played a fair bit. My driver swing feels awful but I was at least keeping it in play. Other clubs were pretty solid, just shorter than normal, but that's to be expected after not playing at all for a few months. Long range forecast doesn't look like there's any more golf for at least a couple weeks but I've got the itch to keep playing so I'll probably try to get on a simulator a few times just to work on things. This year I think I'm limiting myself to 2 leagues and subbing in 2 others so I have more days to practice or play other courses. Last year I ended up playing in 4 leagues and it was too much.
