I think the problem is I spent all of my money re-rolling to buy stuff to juice Campfire as high as possible for Ante 12, then I had no money left to spend on re-rolls in Ante 13.

Got both 100,000,000 in a single hand and Ante 12 though, so that unlocked Stuntman and Petroglyph.

If you must blink, do it now.
Finally broke 100,000,000 with two Triboulets, a Brainstorm, and 3x multiplier, and it all happened while I was streaming my run for a a friend who wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

Suffice to say, they saw and heard what all the fuss was about.

Don't think I'll ever see these heights again.
The two copy Jokers and DNA to generate (3 new kings per match) a deck mostly of Red Seal, Holographic (not Polychrome :( ), Glass Kings. This is why most played is High Card - my winning hands were all Flush Five or Four of a Kinds.
During the matches the copyjokers switch to copying one each of Sock and Buskin and the X2 Mult for scored Kings and Queens Legendary, for complicated mathematical reasons that I kind of get but the excellent Balatro simulator helped me confirm (add Five of a Kind please, could only run the numbers with 4). A smattering of other jokers, one the X2 Mult to first played face card, that was an extra little boost but at those heights I was looking very specifically for retriggering or ways to get the last few non UltraKing cards out of my deck. Everything else was pretty irrelevant.

Ghost Deck, spectrals make breaking the game way easier.

Man, the last few challenges are brutal. I got through the first 15 within the first 3 tries with few exceptions. Golden Needle is kicking my rear end. Even taking down the first boss means that you have to get solid jokers with +mult and ideally a Planet card to upgrade Flush or Full House. It’s almost impossible to get out of debt and generating income is so goddamn hard when there’s no hand bonus.

I made it to ante 6 in a run where I was able to make face card pairs a viable scoring hand but it topped out at like 40k chips.

I feel like the only way to win is getting super lucky a Spectral pack and maybe finding Stuntman and another equally powerful joker.

Do the challenges have fixed seeds? If not I got the most ridiculous joker drops on the rich get richer challenge, bootstraps and bull turned up quickly and after that I got to the moon for a guaranteed $40 after every round which then boosted the others. Up until ante 11 I could just slam down a random card and get instant flames

Alright turns out I completely have been underestimating vagabond and I think it's going to be a snap pick on higher stakes for me now. If you get it early enough you can just turn a bunch of your cards into steel/gold/buffs and the golds completely recover your economy. I always knew how easy it was to generate free poo poo during the blind, but you end up walking out of each blind with tons of cash too since you can leave with a hermit card to double up the blind rewards + extra gold cards in your hand you inevitably end up with.

Black is my favorite solely because eternal jokers are a really fun twist. The game would probably be a lot better if they were way lower on the stake ladder.

Finally beat gold ante. Red deck. Not sure how many others if any I'll run up that far. It gets really unfun and RNG bound a few levels from the top difficulty. Glad I saw the challenge through at least once though.

Did it playing pairs. Jokers were Supernova, Bull, Burglar, Blackboard, and Baseball Card. Barely touched planets and tarot, was all about the jokers and then as soon as I had the Bull stacking up coins to feed it.

Yeah, agree. That's the most interesting-in-a-fun-way difficulty bump amidst all of the mostly unfun ones.

It only gets worse from there I'm afraid. The 2nd Ante scaling increase at Purple stakes means you either reset a lot for good skips in Ante 1, or reset at lot in Ante 2 when you don't get anything useful in the shop.

Purple scaling is where the game becomes actively unfun to play. You either have a very good engine by the time you're out of ante 1 or you're just hosed.

But guys, seriously, what fuckin’ black magic do you have to pull off to finish the final 3 challenges!? More than half my runs don’t even make it past the first boss.

Thirding this. It's the perfect first stake switch I feel, you get no pure drawback (same money, same blind amounts), but it's still affecting your entire run and choices. I genuinely want to unlock it so I can try it out.

Like, example that comes to mind, you have Madness, you need some economy, you might want to refresh or hope for an Eternal, whereas without it you're going to be more cutthroat, since spending money on jokers means it's a bit of a waste (unless you need it at the next blind, of course)

I got stuck on Purple for over a week (granted I can only toss a couple hours a day into this game) and am now banging my head against Orange. Using the Checkered deck lets me consistently get out of Ante 1, but honestly this stopped being fun a long time ago.

This wildly misses the mark on challenging; I feel like I am largely just waiting for the game to allow me to clear the stakes at this point. There are just a ton of seeds that cannot survive into Ante 2 because the stores gently caress you over in a way that you can't play around.

I feel most decks have a decent chance to winstreak up through about blue without needing crazy precise play, so purple is a welcome challenge and most decks I find orange more interesting than frustrating. Gold stake can still get hosed though.

Golden needle was the toughest. You start with the credit card, so it shouldn't be too bad finding a joker or planet that gets you through ante 1. It was helpful to max out the card and then get a spectral that sets money to 0. Some bosses like water can end the run, and there's not much you can do.

Cruelty wasn't too bad. You should be able to get through ante 1 with no jokers using a reliable hand type like flush.

Jokerless pretty much requires building a deck with enough glass cards to win, so tarot cards become the most important resource. Once you can clear 100k reliably, skip all the blinds to conserve glass cards and hope for some good tags.

A guy in Reddit posted this and I figured I’d copy it here because it’s seriously good advice.

quote:

A lot of it is just pure Balatro fundamentals taken to the most extreme. If Gold Stake taught me to adore High Card and Pair, then the challenges makes you realize that Four of a Kind is one of the strongest hands in Balatro. It's essy to build around, it accomodates a lot of steels/glass, and most inportantly it scales incredibly well.

It'a funny you mention Golden Needle really because I employed the same basic strat for that and Jokerless. Immediately level up Full House in the first Ante, keep a bonus/mult arcana at the ready, and then at a moment's notice immediately pivot into Four of a Kind. If I can't reliably get Mars to level 3 by the end of Ante 2 I restart. Golden Needle is easier because it allows you to have econ Jokers instead of entirely relying on RNG. But the premise is the same.

• Ante 1-2 = Full House, hunt for econ cards, level up Four of a Kind, and begin altering your deckwith Deaths or Strengths. Strengths are especially good.
• Ante 3-4 = The easier Antes once you have a goid Four of a Kind level. Continue altering your deck, econ some more, and hunt for multipliers.
• Ante 5-8 = Ideally at this point you'll have some decent multipliers now (Steels or Glass if Jokerless). Level uo Mars whenever possible. Continue what you're doing until Ante 8. The early Antes are always the hardest.

Telescope and Reroll vouchers are a MUST. Spectral packs especially if you get Immolate is godly. Always have a steel or glass in hand to push your points. Don't be afraid to push your luck with Lucky Cards, Jokerless is already RNG heavy so might as well right?

I hadn’t considered going hard for four of a kind but I can see it working. It scales way faster than Flush. Still so, so dependent on getting the right Tarot cards and maybe a couple of Spectrals.

I think gold stake would be much better if you simply started at 5 gold and not 4. Having 9 gold after the first round is reasonable, I might play it out even if the skip sucks. But when you only get 3 gold from beating it, it's just not worth the effort compared to rerolling until you get a good skip.

Beat my first challenge On A Knifes Edge. This was a fun combo to run but it was a little precarious until I got my economy rolling cause every blind would eat 2 jokers.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

Finally got my ante 12 and 100,000,000 hand run. I was playing the ghost deck and started off with the joker that lets you buy planet cards for free, then bought the one that gains +2 mult per reroll a few rounds later. Ended up with the reroll joker having like 400 mult and feeding into a blueprint, campfire, x4 for 4 of a kind, and the one that gets x0.1 per planet card used. I managed to pick up both store cost reduction vouchers and both reroll cost reduction vouchers, so I was rerolling like 10 times per round and all the tarot/planet cards were either $1 if I used them or $0 for a temporary x0.5. My deck was like 30 aces and a handful of other cards I didn't quite manage to destroy. Scaling finally caught up to me when I couldn't string together enough glass aces (never managed to get a red seal on one, let alone dupe them) and red seal steel aces at the same time.

I saw a Mime early in the run but it was before I had any held-in-hand abilities to duplicate and I never saw one again after I was rolling in red seal steel cards.
