i think a lot of people were expecting something explicitly Feminist and when it wasn't that they decided it was the movie that was wrong

I still haven't managed to see this goddamn movie yet and I am fascinated at the idea that more menstruation content would have made it feminist

i would bet there is a cut menstruation scene that was cut because it didn't add anything to the story other than another joke about Bella not understanding her body despite looking like/being a full grown woman

one of the most refreshing things about it was there aren’t any stupid shamalan twists. it very much puts down the cards upfront on the table and plays them out

a vastly dumber burgeroid writer/director would have tried to play up amnesia and then BUT BABY BRAIN as a twist at the end

im a bit tired of there having to be twists in the writing for everything

yup, I really enjoy movies that lay out the premise 15 minutes in and focus on doing a good job of bringing that poo poo home.

Here I go writing about Poor Things again but that's fine, I love it. I'll gladly prattle on about it endlessly.

First of all, if you finish the movie and reduce it to something like "Oh 'Poor Things', that's Bella" or "that's the women" or "that's the men" or "that's the impoverished people who live in that lovely society" well no. Watch it again – you didn't understand.

The source material is undeniably socialist/feminist. That colors the whole film and while I think there are clear elements of that it gets overwhelmed by Lanthimos/McNamara and their Gen X philosophy of authenticity.

Bella may as well at one point be shouting "I didn't ask to be born" to her father, a character literally named God. Do you get it yet?

And everyone she meets in the movie represents a very clear, rigid, crystallized view point for her. Everyone is a caricature of a school of thought for her to work through and push against as she assimilates all these ways of thinking into something that represents her "true" self. (Also important to note that nearly every character in the movie is interested in exploiting Bella in one way or another – there are no self-sacrificing Gandhi figures, everyone is scratching to survive as best they can, even Toinette.)

Why does Bella go back with her husband at the end of the movie? Not because she wants to see what it's like to live as an aristocrat. She wants to know "was I a good person before" and the answer is emphatically "no."

And ultimately Bella gets to be happy because she self-actualizes into an existence that she can accept as being "good", one dedicated to helping others instead of exploiting or manipulating them to survive. She's not depicted as perfect or saintly (she does essentially murder her husband) but she broke free of the cycle of suffering and is able to be happy on her own terms. For the sake of the movie we get the story book happy ending fade out.

It's a real term outside of tvtropes and it very much applies to the black characters in poor things who only exist to be quirky and help the development of the white protagonist while receiving no real characterization of their own.

I’ll let you in on a secret: no character in the movie has real characterization outside of being caricature stereotype representing facets of society and thinking: not max, not the wheelchair lady, not wudderburn, not the brothel lady, not the general, not even God

and that’s good. now recontextualize your assessment with this newfound knowledge

That Harry and Toinette only exist in the story to teach Bella that poverty and bodily autonomy exist respectively and because of that they're magical negros or at least adjacent. It's a shallow understanding of the characters in my opinion because it misses half of what they're doing as characters and really stretches the definition of magical negro. It's a movie where every character primarily exists to teach Bella something.

quote:

A minority character will step forward to help the protagonist, with their pure heart and folksy wisdom, and possibly magic. They are usually black, but may come from another oppressed minority. They step into the life of the much more privileged (and, in particular, almost always white) central character and, in some way, enrich that central character's life.

Astley is himself a wealthy student or professor, possibly aristocrat, who dedicates his life to philosophy and pleasure. He also explicitly tries to stifle Bella's growth the same way as any other archetype does in the movie. He represents pragmatism/nihilism.

quote:

Bella Baxter : If I know the world I can improve it.
Harry Astley : You can't. This is the real point. Don't accept the lie of religion, socialism, capitalism. We are a hosed species. Know it. Hope is smash-able, realism is not. Protect yourself with the truth.
Bella Baxter : I realize what you are now Harry. Just a broken little boy who cannot bear the pain of the world.
Harry Astley : I suppose so.

He's bored and wants a kindred spirit friend to traipse around the world with, not to help Bella.

Godwin and Max get a little bit of characterization outside of Bella but that's only because we get to see them before her story really gets started and they are the only characters we really see interact with each other without her as a party to the conversation.

Godwin is the closest we get to seeing a truly happy character in the movie (other than Bella), because he basically understands the cycle of suffering but cannot himself escape it
