This is where I break from a lot of people here. I think that this is the kind of thing Democrats should be doing in earnest, if they care about the election at all. They should lie. Being disingenuous and flat-out lying should certainly be on the table if you really believe that you're stopping a fascist movement from taking over the United States, waging civil war, putting American citizens in death camps, etc. They should absolutely be using the courts to get Trump off the ballot, they should try to put him in prison whether he's guilty or not. If they want to scream and wail about how we owe them their loyalty so they can stop the fascisms, they should hold up their end of it by acting like they actually believe the poo poo they're saying.

I think I get Halloween Jack’s point, which is that the democrats rhetoric (imminent fascist takeover) is deeply incongruous with how they are acting (business as usual it’s all politics) You do see bits of it with the Trump ballot fuckery and the court proceedings, but even that’s just Trump specifically and pretty tepid If turbo hitler was really imminent and the sequel to the final solution was really right around the corner then you’d definitely want your opposition fighting harder than this I don’t really agree with the premise that there’s much functional difference between Trump and Biden but if I accepted the premise then I’d probably agree that every underhanded strategy was on the table

The problem with the win at any cost logic is it fundamentally misunderstands who the Democrats are. They don't want to win and dominate, they want to "be viable" and fundraiser. They regularly champion their losses as fundraising opportunities. The Republicans don't totally want to win either, because both parties ' insiders know this country has no capacity to deal with the future, so it's just hot potato until then. Once you understand American politics as a battle between impotent legal disclaimers, stuff like our woeful COVID response or dumb aid packages to a country we're helping to genocide make a lot more sense.

I guess for me that incongruity is just more evidence that nobody in power is really afraid a second Trump term is going to fundamentally upset the status quo, rather than a reason to condemn democrats for not getting deeper in the mud, but if you buy the premise then it makes sense, and even if you don’t buy the premise it is really interesting to note the big gulf between rhetoric and strategy
